Quoting from the famous Chinese proverb, ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now,’ could apply to buying a classic muscle car. In the case of Mo-Par City, now is the time to not just buy one classic muscle car, but a whole collection of the things.

The current owner of Mo-Par City, Larry Pontnack, has decided at the youthful age of 80 years, 50 of these in the car game, that it’s time to retire. If you have not guessed already, Mo-Par City consists of hundreds of A, B, C, and E-body restorable vintage Mopars, and thousands of spare parts. Everything in the collection is up for sale.

Mo-Par City is located in Oregon, Illinois, on a huge area of business zoned land, which includes 30,000 feet of six storage buildings, with everything from minor parts to engines and transmissions.

Ideally, the business is to be sold in its entirety, but Mr. Pontnack has yet to find an ideal buyer. Therefore, Mo-Par City is still open to selling individual vehicles and parts.

However, if the right buyer doesn’t come along, the whole collection could be in danger of going to the crusher. Therefore, if you need any vintage Mopar parts, a restoration project or want to dive into owning the whole business itself, now is the time.

The Chevrolet Camaro was originally birthed to counter the overwhelming popularity of the Ford Mustang. The Camaro was produced with a clear run from late 1966-2002, then from 2009 to the present day. There have been plenty of standout Camaros along the way, such as the ‘SS’, ‘RS’, and ‘ZL1’, but in recent years sales have been flagging.

From current sales reports, Dodge and Ford have the most sales with the Camaro lagging behind. At the end of Q3 2021, Camaro sales fell 32.13% from 22,226 to 15,084 units. Ford Mustang sales also dropped 13.8% from 47,637 to 41,065 units in the same period, while the Dodge Charger and Challenger had an increase of 14.67% to 15.1%. Dodge holds a 65.3% muscle car market share, while Ford has 25.4% and Chevrolet 9.3%.

We Need Another Transformers Movie.

The Chevrolet Camaro has arguably one of the best designs since its late sixties form. Models such as the ZL1 1LE have 650HP+, so power levels aren’t a problem. Plus, the Camaro has a long racing history going back to the original Trans-Am series in the late nineteen sixties.

Therefore, the public perception could be a factor. Dodge has the Demon and the Hellcat. Both of these models unapologetically pour on the power and insanity. The Ford Mustang has its iconic status and is also bolstered by native hand drive sales throughout Europe. The Camaro on the other hand is still an exotic import over the water, and while it has iconic history, it’s now trying to be all things to all men – part pony/muscle car and sports car.

The Transformers movie franchise gave the Camaro a shot in the arm. But as the movies were aimed mostly at kids, we need a few more decades for those kids to mature and buy their own Camaros.

Chevrolet also recently released a holiday film depicting the poignant scenes of a classic 1966 Chevy Impala as seen below. The ad. pulled on the old heartstrings, but cynical me only got from the message, do up that old classic you have in the barn instead of leaving it to rot. If the daughter had turned up in a brand-new ZL1 1LE and stated, ‘it’s what mother would have wanted.’ I’m sure a few more Camaros would have flown out of dealerships.

But if we stick with the nostalgia of the classic market, it seems the Mopars and Fords still grab the headlines. A 1965 Shelby Mustang GT 350R Competition R Model 5R002 prototype is heading to the Mecum auction and is being touted as the world’s most valuable Mustang. There are of course some tasty Camaros in the auction such as a pristine 1969 RS Z28, but more headline getters are needed in the Chevy department overall.

Onwards and Upwards

The next phase of the pony/muscle car evolution seems to be electric. Dodge has already announced their EV intentions from 2024, while Ford is already acclimatizing everyone to an electric Mustang via the Mach-E. The Camaro is likely to follow suit with a hybrid or fully electric version in the near future, but their plans aren’t as publicly solid as the other two makers.

For such a long-standing vehicle, the Chevrolet Camaro isn’t going away anytime soon. Chevy may be holding their cards close to their chest with future plans for the Camaro. But it’s more than likely big news will be coming soon concerning the Camaro’s future intentions……

CarTechBooks has a new delightful offering for anyone who loves a great story, ‘Hemi Under Glass: Bob Riggle and His Wheel-Standing Mopars’.

Co-authors Mark Fletcher & Richard Truesdell provide an insightful and deep dive into probably the best-known “Wheelstander” that thrilled the masses since the mid-1960s right up until 2019. The book’s forward is written by none other than Linda Vaughn. It’s a heartwarming and interesting piece that provides a hint of what to expect in this book.

The book is one hundred and fifty-nine pages of pure joy. Never before seen photographs both in black and white, as well as color, will make you want to keep turning pages. The stories seem endless, with Bob Riggle’s career starting in 1965. So, here is my take on this wonderful book.

I felt the authors provided a precise and accurate tale of Bob’s humble beginnings. Success did not come easy for him, but a chance meeting and eventual friendship with George Hurst became his springboard to fame. Now, don’t get the idea that Bob was simply the driver of a wheel-standing Hemi-powered car. There’s much more for the reader to understand.

The book is not just for drag racers or for people who like flame-throwing, rubber-burning power. It’s a story of determination, friendships, and, an honest-to-goodness great guy. It’s about very hard work with little financial gain in its earliest days. The book explores the life of a man who never sat still in his quest for a fulfilling life.

Hemi Under glass is a book you will love to read. And read more than once. The reader will enjoy the “You Are There” feeling on every page. It’s about many Hemi under glass cars. …..and, there was more than one. There were many “wheel standers” back in those days including Bill “Maverick” Golden in his Little Red Express, the LA Dart, and Chuck Poole. But, the fan-favorite and most popular driver was and is Bob Riggle.

To accurately review this book I refreshed my own memories of days gone by. I’m a gear head and recall these glory days when people filled the stands on weekends to watch the wheel standers race down the quarter-mile. The authors will return you back to those days as well.
Before social media, the only way you would know about the Hemi under Glass was word of mouth or a story in a magazine or newspaper. Different times for sure but the legend lives.

I was fortunate enough to meet Bob Riggle a few years ago. It was at a local car show outside of Pittsburgh. My friends and I were excited to see and hear this monster for ourselves and meet the humble legend. When the time came to fire that beast up, we all stuck our fingers in our ears. I was no less than twenty-five feet away.

The engine cranked very slowly and after about fifteen seconds that Hemi roared to life. With my fingers in my ears, I felt this enormous pounding in my chest. Bob was sitting in the car and regularly revved the engine. His smile was ear to ear and after six decades he clearly still loved to entertain. After he shut that monster down, the crowd let out a yell and Bob just smiled. He was still in love with the Hemi under glass. He graciously signed a poster for everyone who wanted one. It’s an evening I’ll never forget. So much so that the poster hangs in my humble shop to this day.

CarTechBooks.com is offering this book online or by calling 1-800-551-4754. Better yet, there are two hundred limited addition signed copies if you act quick. Don’t wait my friends, as this book is the perfect gift for you or that special person who will read this book over and over.

Muscle Cars

By Dave Ashton

The ubiquitous muscle car represents more than just a huge engine and stocky design. Back in the golden age of muscle cars, from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, these vehicles coincided with the space race and the height of rock ‘n’ roll. We were going to the moon baby, and we had the soundtrack to match. Add in some of the most powerful vehicles on the planet at the time, such as the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454, and you end up with a heady mix. There were lots of vehicles to choose from back then, but what are the most popular muscle cars worldwide today, and how are muscle cars faring in today’s market?

Back in the nineteen sixties, the big three (Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors) owned 89.6% of the market. These guys still produce the most popular muscle cars as we will come onto later. But the automotive scene is far different than in the mid to late last century. Today we will go through the most popular muscle cars worldwide and the possible future for our beloved muscle cars.

The Muscle Car Formula

Muscle Cars

A vehicle needs a specific set of criteria to be classed as a muscle car. The ideal recipe needs an American-made vehicle, a bass-rich V8 engine, two doors, rear-wheel drive, and two seats upfront and in the back. There are variations on the theme, along with the ‘Pony car’ sector, which is more strictly the Ford Mustang and Camaro. More loosely, the Chevy Corvette is a two-seater sports car and the Shelby Cobra was originally a British body with an American V8.

Back in the late 1960s when muscle car makers ruled, there were a plethora of brands to choose from. Many have gone the way of the Dodo, but living examples are very much rare collectible classics. Muscle car brands of the day included – AMC, Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Mercury, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, and Shelby. Many of the designs were quite similar, but it was what was under the hood that counted.

Muscle Car Engines

Muscle Cars-engine

The outer shell and even the interior of a car may leave you drooling, but it’s nothing without a potent engine. These original drag racers became more ‘plush’ as time went on, but the space race for the most power was equally as important. By roughly 1969, the no replacement for displacement concept had almost been pushed to its limits.

Ford had the Boss 429 V8, Chevrolet with the 454Ci. V8, and Mopars with the legendary 426 Hemi engine. Nostalgia shouldn’t be underestimated in the car world, which is why modern interpretations follow the same theme. Huge displacement V8 engines, but now with almost twice the horsepower. Owning a car in 1970 with 425HP or the Plymouth Superbird going round the NASCAR track at 200mph+, is still impressive today.

The Most Popular Muscle Cars Sold In The US

Tracking down the most popular muscle cars sold in the US from the current breed was the easiest task. It’s no surprise that Ford sells the most with the Mustang, followed by the Dodge Challenger and the Chevy Camaro. However, according to Goodcarbadcar.net the Dodge Challenger outsold the Ford Mustang with 5,631 units sold compared to 4,935 sold by Ford in December 2020.

Most Popular Muscle Cars Sold Worldwide

Tracking down non-US muscle car sales, along with the used market is a much harder proposition. Taking into account private sales is harder to quantify. However, auction websites and international shippers provide some data.

International muscle car sales are more important than ever to raise awareness of the breed and to keep the current inventory going. According to hagerty.com, 30,000 classic cars were shipped from American ports to European destinations in 2018.

Many of these American classics go to Sweden and Finland, with Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and France also been strong contenders. Many vehicles also go to the Netherlands and Germany, where they are distributed to surrounding countries. Popular types include muscle cars, pony cars, and classics from the 1950s and 1960s. One of the apparent reasons for so many exports is that the climate in the US is far better than in Europe. Thus, more solid examples are available from the US.

There’s also the fact that there are more variety and supply of vehicles in the US. The shipping costs are also very reasonable, making the US rich pickings for classic vehicles.

According to wcshipping.com, the Ford Mustang is the most popular vehicle to be exported to the likes of Europe, Australia, and Asia. 2nd is the Chevrolet Corvette, with the Chevrolet Camaro coming in 3rd and the Dodge Charger in 6th place.

For solely modern muscle cars, the Ford Mustang is romping ahead with sales in 140 countries. The Ford Mustang has done especially well in Europe being available in native hand drive. The Mustang has also been a big seller in China, being one of the best selling sports cars.

Popular Muscle Car Selling Websites

Muscle Cars

If you want to own your own muscle car, what are the most popular muscle car selling websites? These websites can be arguably split into specific and generic. Some websites specialize in buying and selling classic vehicles, while others sell a bit of everything. Both types have their pros and cons. Dedicated classic car websites generally list the more expensive examples, but also have the best aftermarket service and checks. Generic car websites are where you can find a bargain, but there is also less reassurance if anything goes wrong.

Dyler – This website is the newest of the bunch, but also a good port of call for overseas car buyers.

Mecum – Some of the rarest and most valuable muscle cars pass through this auction house.

Barrett-Jackson – Another auction house that specializes in ultra-rare and expensive muscle cars.

Hemmings – There are plenty of classic cars for sale on this website, being one of the most popular in the US.

ClassicCars.com – This website lists plenty of reasonable value vehicles, with a huge inventory.

Ebay Motors – For the sheer variety and size of the audience, you can’t beat eBay motors. You can search country centric versions of the website, and if you land on your feet, you can snag a very good value bargain.

Autotrader Classics – back in the days before the Internet, Auto Trader was the number 1 spot to find used vehicles. It was especially popular in the UK and Europe and is still one of the most respected in the US.

Conclusion

No matter if you want that one-off pristine classic or a beat-up restoration project, there is a muscle car out there for you. Muscle car prices have steadily increased over the years, making them a worthwhile investment for the future.

When we are in the situation of tasty new muscle cars not being released due to our virus ridden planet, it makes sense for people to start modding their cars. Home deliveries and sealed off garage areas have still been going full tilt, with plenty of engine swaps and upgrades being the order of the day.

Here we have a few examples of how you can get full tilt power from a Mopar, if you’re willing to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in.

Hellephant Swapped Challenger SRT Demon Dyno Test

helephant dodge demon Image

First up is apparently the first recorded Hellephant engine swap into a Mopar. In this case the vehicle in question is a Challenger SRT Demon, which is the new home to the 426 Hellephant Engine V8. For the uninitiated, the ‘Hellephant’ was a limited run of crate engine kits, first revealed at SEMA 2018, producing 1,000 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque.

Unfortunately, the engine isn’t exactly road legal, but that hasn’t stopped the guys over at Demonology dropping it into a Dodge Demon. This is a bold move in itself, considering the Demon can throw out 808hp and 770 lb-ft torque on 91 octane gasoline without trying. But if you have the means, why not pop the most powerful Mopar engine into the highest ranked Dodge mobile.

Which begs the question how much power can the Hellephant produce? If you don’t want to run through the short video below then the answer is 944.82WHP and 877.46 lb-ft torque, running on a mix of E-40 fuel. Maybe with some detailed tweaking and fettling to certain engine components these figures can be increased slightly, but at least it gives a baseline reading for what the Hellephant can achieve in reality.

Don’t Mod Your 392/5.7L Hemi

This little video should be the spark for a whole slew of debate. The takeaway message here is, ‘You shouldn’t buy a car to build the motor.’ In other words, if you want to go as fast as a Hellcat, simply buy a Hellcat.

Ouch, since time immemorial people have been upgrading engines to eke out that extra bit of power. But we do get the point being given here. If its a 392 or an R/T you own, you may end up spending more money on the upgrades than just buying into a Hellcat. This makes sense if its just the power levels you are interested in.

Without getting into the intricacies of the pros and cons, simply watch the video and make up your own mind.

Dodge Challenger ‘Nitrous Nuke’

As a nice counter view to the argument above, what if owned had a Challenger 392, still wanted more power, but you’re not exactly enamored with forced induction? One possible solution is going down the nitrous route.

Along with a very cool body wrap, this Challenger has been treated to an Edelbrock-supplied Victor EFI intake manifold and a 100-shot of nitrous. Exterior features have also been added in the form of a new front splitter, carbon spoiler, universal air springs and an Air Lift Performance 3p digital management.

There doesn’t seem to be any power ratings for this hybrid setup, but if nothing else the body wrap, bagged stance and spoilers make for a very cool looking Mopar machine.

1971 Plymouth GTX With Dodge Viper V10

plymouth Image

Variety is the spice of life, so they say. Which means if new muscle cars with new engines or upgrades isn’t your thing, then why not go for a vintage vehicle with something equally as ridiculous under the hood. In this case it’s a 1971 Plymouth GTX with a rather tasty Dodge Viper V10 engine.

The whole project has been put together by Horsepower Northwest, Washington to be a driving machine. This meant upgrading everything along with the engine to Baer brakes, chassis upgrades, an 8.75 rear end, custom front and rear suspension and a wonderfully deep paint job.

There’s clearly a million and one ways to upgrade any vehicle, with the deciding factor usually being how deep are your pockets. If money is never an issue, engines could be swapped out on a daily basis, with upgrades to your hearts content. However, most of us have to be more canny with our money, which means far more research and will our chosen bits provide the end results we expect.

Without thorough research, an endless journey of upgrades can not just hit the wallets, but also time and mental power. This is why a car for sale which has had endless modifications will rarely bring back the money ploughed into the thing. Hopefully, the examples above will give you a few ideas for modding or buying your own vehicle.

As the automotive industry is slowly cranking back into gear, news from both the old and the new muscle car scenes are starting to emerge. Firstly, it’s the turn of Dodge who are releasing a bunch of 50th anniversary features. Earlier in the year limited edition models were available in high impact colors, while this time around the newer models will be unlimited for the rest of 2020.

Dodge New Colors
charger smoke show

The latest release for both the Dodge Challenger and Charger will be a new color, called ‘Smoke Show’ (paint code PAE). Five total exterior colors will be available for both models which also include Hellraisin, Sinamon Stick, Frostbite, and Gold Rush. These colors were first debuted a few years ago at a FCA Design Color Clinic in California, where the new color were unfortunately dubbed, ‘Garbage Can’ and now aims to replace the color ‘Destroyer Grey.’ The new colors will also be available in all levels of trim for both the Challenger and Charger models.

1968 Dodge Super Bee Field Find
1968 Dodge Super Bee Image

Just as night follows day, there will always be an instance of a rare vintage muscle car being found in the most unlikely of places. In this case it’s a 1968 Dodge Super Bee which has been buried under a green tarp since 1991. The car is currently for sale for just $3000 on Facebook’s marketplace.

There aren’t many details with the listing, with the most information gleaned from the accompanying images. The images show the vehicle is in quite a shocking state and while the engine is in place with the automatic transmission, it’s got a good deal of panel rust, so we can only presume what the underside is like. The interior also looks like it would need a complete overhaul.

The ad. says that the car is ‘good for parts’ and while a good condition 1968 Dodge Super Bee can fetch over $40k, it’s still going to take a brave person to attack this project.

Mecum Head Sells GTO Collection

If completely knackered muscle cars or the latest and greatest is not your thing, then you may be interested in this lineup of Pontiac GTO’s being owned and auctioned by Dana Mecum, president and founder of Mecum Auctions.

All the vehicles come from his own personal collection of Pontiac GTO’s ranging from the years 1964 to 1970, such as a one-off gold GTO which was apparently a giveaway during a 1965 marketing campaign. As Mr. Mecum is a long-standing fan of GTOs, with his father having owned a Pontiac dealership in the past, these vehicles are near and dear to his heart. This point has been made stark with the stipulation of one vehicle being if it is eventually sold again, it must be sold back to Mecum.

If you fancy one of these tasty vehicles, then these particular GTO’s will head to auction during the Indianapolis Mecum auction on July 10-18, 2020. To find out more about the particular auction, check out the link here.

If any vehicle is going to raise the stakes for record beating strip times, it going to be some permutation of a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. In this case its the Vixen Hellcat, which has recently proven itself with a 3.99 8th mile time at Cecil County Dragway. Basically, making this Dodge Challenger one of the quickest Mopars in the world.

As in the video above, the moment was captured in fine detail from trackside and inside the car. This at least gives some idea of how the power was laid down. So, what goes into a machine capable of these power levels and time?

vixenhellcat

Everything on this car has been purpose-built, which starts with an all tube chassis. Under the hood is with 528 cubic inches Hemi V8 from Disomma Racing, fitted out with a pair of 98-millimeter turbochargers. This produces an incredible 5000HP for the 3,000lb. machine which translates to the track in a 3.99 second time at 197 miles per hour.

If you wanted a bit more action from the Vixen Challenger, then check out the video below of the car showing the goods at no prep. racing.

In the classic car world there is money to be made from the right vehicle. This means there will always be scammers wanting to pass off a regular car as an expensive rarity and the uninformed will always pay the price. Initially, this article was inspired by a post on Hemmings which detailed 2 scammers who were caught trying to pass off a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 and a 1966 427 Corvette. The Chevelle had a fake build sheet, while the ‘Vette had a fake VIN tag as identifiers.

So let’s say you are interested in buying a vintage muscle car. How do you check it’s authentic and it is exactly as the seller describes? In the Hemmings example above, the Chevelle wasn’t spotted until the owner’s wife used an online VIN decoder. The ‘Vette’s true nature was spotted when judged at a car show to have the wrong lettering font on the VIN tag for the year, even though the digits were correct.

Title and VIN Number check
The first piece of advice from the Hemmings article above is to peform a Title check. Ask to see the title of the car. Make sure everything is in order and if you have the slightest doubt, ring the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System. Make sure the seller is on the title and it’s not listed as being salvaged or rebuilt. Make a call to check the title anyway as checking twice doesn’t harm.
vintag

Check to see if a vehicle has any lien attached to it. Basically, any loans or outstanding payments on a vehicle. Autoblog have a thorough article on the subject here.

Checking the VIN number (vehicle identification number) and if it’s authentic is needed. The VIN number is a 17 digit ID for every vehicle and the location of the tag will depend on the make and model year. In the case of the ‘Vette above, the numbers were correct on the tag, but the font was incorrect for the year. Only an expert with knowledge of these things and a keen eye would spot this area.

There are paid for services like Carfax and Autocheck. VINCheckPro have a free and paid for service. Make sure to ask if they can provide you with a comprehensive report, which usually comes from the paid for services. Dealer or private seller, ask if they can perform a VIN check. Many dealers would be able to do this quite easily through Carfax, but it will also add to the integrity of a private sale.

Research, research….
A little research goes a long way. Like the 1970 Chevelle above, read up on VIN codes for the model year, engine types, badging, anything that makes that years vehicle standout. Also, common prices for the model and options for that year model. You can simply make a tick list of identifiers and even ask the seller to send you pictures of these.

Books. Those paper things we all used to read before tablets, are great sources of information. Cartech have a good range of books from their ‘Cars in details’ series for many models such as this one which has lots of information about each model and plenty of identifiers.

Get in the experts
It doesn’t hurt to ask in forums or at local car clubs about a specific make and model. Enthusiasts are always happy to help out their brethren. Provide as much information as possible along with images if possible. Facebook groups are always a good start point and feedback is usually the quickest.

Depending on your make and model, there are online experts set up to verify different muscle cars. Galen Grover is well-known for covering Mopars, while Marti reports cover Fords. These are paid for services and can take time. However, paying for the ideal of an in-person inspection is always worth it, especially on a very expensive vehicle.

Up close and personal
Nothing beats viewing a car in person and especially when you have somebody with you who is equally knowledgeable. Compare verified original images with your potential purchase. Check serial numbers on things like engines and transmissions match and are as per the model year. Many muscle cars have replacement powertrains, so the seller needs to be upfront if things are original or replacements. Ask questions on all areas of the car, lots of questions. What are original or OEM parts? Can you check and cross-reference these numbers? What’s the back history to the car? Can you contact the original owner?

Knowledgeable people helping you evaluate a car can be invaluable. Those fellows who know a 1970’s taillight from a 1969 version, engines hoses or a distributor cap that are incorrect can all be tell-tale signs of a non-unoriginal. For example, a Mopar enthusiast friend who was eyeing up a listed unrestored and original Dodge Challenger, got out a small magnet, hovered the thing over the body and found out most of it was full of Bondo from front to back. A quick engine number check and the numbers didn’t match either. A morning wasted, but better that than thousands of dollars.

Some people may simply not have the time or inclination to perform all this research. If that’s the case, you will have to opt. for a paid for service to check everything is correct on your proposed vehicle. Even so, getting to know as much about a car as possible is no bad thing. A quick VIN code check online can be a good starting point.

There are also some other general rules with car buying. If it’s too good to be true, it usually is. If a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 in mint condition is $25k below market price, ask why. Also, if your in doubt, walk away. A car may seem the buy of a lifetime, but parting with cash for a car that isn’t what it says it is hurts more.

The whole point here is to make sure you buy what it says on the tin and all information is as it should be. Muscle cars are usually bought by enthusiasts and those who have saved for a long time to acquire their ultimate ride. In this regard, you always need to perform your due diligence on any vehicle. It’s not an option.

The Coyote Johnson auction will feature 100 muscle cars and parts hidden away for almost 40 years. There’s a huge range of vehicles on offer from the old to the more up-to-date. The accompanying video below giving you a taster on what’s on offer.

The collection ranges from 55 Chevy’s up to later model Trans Ams, spanning over different buildings. All the cars were bought, driven then stored away for safekeeping by the owner, presumably meaning most of the vehicles are in relatively good condition. From the video you can see quite a few project vehicles, but most seem to be complete, especially those classics such as Mopars and the vast majority from the classic muscle car era such as Chargers, GTO’s, Chevelles and Cudas, to name but a few.

The full inventory of what’s available is yet to come, but it seems there are quite a few convertibles in the mix, with hopefully a few rare options.

The auction will take place on Saturday September 14, 2019 at Montgomery County Fairgrounds, Red Oak, Iowa 51566. To find out more about the auction visit our webpage here.

Finding vital statistics on any muscle car has never been easier since the birth of the Internet. Before that, people had to wade through countless magazines, a limited supply of books and still some of the information may not be verified. We’ve got a much easier time today, but it’s still a good idea to have a few bookmarks of ways you can start an investigation for any type of muscle car at your fingertips.

Generic knowledge sites like Wikipedia are a good starting point, but its specialist websites that usually have the best nitty-gritty bits of information that are missed elsewhere. Below a breakdown of some of the resources you can start with when researching your own makes and models. We’ve also added links to our own website for each make. Another port of call is social media groups. Joining a few on the likes of Facebook for your particular make and model and asking a few questions, may not just uncover the information you need, but also get you involved with many like-minded people.

As another general plug on one of our past posts, you could try out our ultimate list of American muscle cars which gives a link to the majority of the main types of muscle cars.

AMC
For AMC vehicles TheAMCForum.com is a great place to stop for any AMC car from 1968 to 1974. Although a lot of the forum still has participation, many people have moved over to social media for discussion. Making things like Facebook groups a good stop off point. The forum still has tons of information which wont go out of date.

Buick
From young to old, you can find a lot of things on Buicks at the Sloan Museum.  It’s mainly a centre for Buick information, but you can find other stuff for vehicles produced in Flint, Michigan. You’re going to have to pay for the information, but that should also mean more accurate research. Individual car listings are also quite good these days in giving you production numbers and engine starts, basically as it verifies how much a car is worth.

Chevrolet
Chevy and GM have a lot of information to wade through, but one first stop could be the GM Heritage Center. The National Corvette Restorers Society is also good for production numbers. Being such a big carmaker there is also plenty of museums – the Chevrolet Hall of Fame, the Corvette Museum and the California Automobile Museum.

Mopar
The Mopar name is everything from the Fiat Chrysler group. An all-inclusive name for Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, Imperial and DeSoto vehicles. Galen Govier is one of the foremost experts. Darrell Davis series of books is good for Dodge and Plymouths. Mymopar.com is not as maintained as it used to be, but its still got lots of old threads of information as a start point. You also have Allpar.com which has literally tons of information on Mopars.

Ford and Mercury
You can find lots of examples of Fords and Cougars(the cars, not the…….) or anything in general by Mercury to wade through. Marti Reports are the top paid service for anything Ford, also standard for official verification for selling a Ford vehicle.

Oldsmobile
Oldsmobile comes under the GM banner, as with Buick, Chevrolet and Pontiac, but better to seek out info. for the individual models. The GM Heritage Center have levels of records for a fee, but there are some free documents as here on the 442. Like most of the vehicles listed on our website we try to get as much information as possible, from engine sizes to production stats., so supplement this information, with social media user groups.

Pontiac
There are quite a few resources online for Pontiacs. Jim Mattison’s PHS Automotive Services is again a paid for service but will give you everything for your particular model. The GM Heritage Center is again a the port of call, as is the Pontiac-Oakland Museum.

Like all these resources above, its a good idea to double check the information on a few different websites before concluding your search. Paid for services should be the most accurate and should give you the stamp of approval when selling a car, but free resources can be as good for your own research. The lists of information is growing all the time, so hopefully the ones above will give you good start point.

The Alan Rietz Mopar collection has been one of those hot topics in recent months concerning a whole host of Mopar vehicles and parts coming up for auction. The actual auction itself took place on June 9, 2018, but it’s not always promoted what the vehicles and parts went for after the event.

You can find out some of the background to the collection in the videos below, but the main talking points are the example vehicles and the eventual selling prices. The whole collection centres around Dodge cars, Dodge pickups, Plymouths, Chrysler Imperial’s, Corvettes, tons of Mopar parts and a bunch of motorcycles. Vanderbrink auctions.com who handled the auction have a PDF on thier website with the full rundown of auction listings and final selling prices.

Examples a 1970 Dodge Challenger SE 2dr HT JH29N0B150852 sold – $15500.00, 1970 Plymouth Cuda 2dr HT BS23U0E137284 sold – $13500.00, 1970 Dodge Super Bee 440 6 Pack 2dr HT 42250.00, 1970 Road Runner 2dr HT RM23N0E101183 sold – $20000.00, 1970 Dodge Dart GT 2dr HT LH23C0R2364872 $350.00, 1972 Dodge Demon 2dr HT LL29C2B145062 sold – $2250.00.

With over 100 vehicles this was quite the Mopar auction and hopefully some of the sale prices will give you an idea, in one nice list of what some of these vehicles can currently sell for.

Buildings and locations of businesses come and go, but brand names can live on. This is the case with Norman Kraus, aka “Mr. Norms, which was originally a car dealer, Grand Spaulding Dodge, probably one of the most famous spots for Mopar enthusiasts.

The focus was on selling performance vehicles aka muscle cars to young buyers starting in 1962. If they didn’t have one from the factory, they would build it themselves. Examples were a 1967 Dodge Dart GSS (for Grand Spaulding Special) 383ci., an engine fitting counter to what Dodge thought was possible. The first dealership to install a dynamometer, free performance tunes also easily turning a 383 with 180hp into a 325hp monster. if Mopars were your thing in the late 60’s and 70’s, Mr. Norms was on your radar.

Norman Kraus sold his shares in the business in 1977 with its doors eventually shutting in the 1980’s. The location may have shut its doors but Mr. Norm lives on expanding into sports, trucks, vintage builds and modern Mopars. You can visit his most recent website here.

But what should be done with the original building? It looks like it’s been concreted up, but it would be wonderful if it can be made into a museum to commemorate Mr. Norms wonderful vehicles. You never know……

When it comes to tripping over vast amounts of old junked muscle cars like the ones pictured here, it’s usually in a public auction or similar. This video was a random post by Shawn Christopherson on his Facebook page, saying this is his parents place and not much more after that information wise.

The drone type footage shows vast amounts of vehicles from possibly the 50’s onwards all in various states and condition. There’s definitely a few more Mopars in there, a bunch of 50 Chevys, late 70s vehicles, plenty of trucks and even a speedboat and a disused school bus. The footage also showed a huge amount of land along with some possible storage buildings. In other words, there could be a lot more vehicles and parts than shown in the video.

But where is this lot located and is anything for sale? The only information given away by Shawn is his comment, ‘They are at my parents place’ and his location being Meeteetse, Wyoming. Past that, if you’re interested in anything you see in the video its probably best to drop him a message on his Facebook page if you’re seriously interested in anything. In any case, it’s an interesting bunch of vehicles which could have some little gems thrown into the mix.

I’m guessing many of you will have to doubletake the supplied image. Its a……., no its not, its a……..part Mustang, part Dodge Daytona, this is the ‘Daytona Hemi Stang’ which should have Ford and Mopar people reacting like they’ve just been plugged into the mains supply.

Dan Dhondt has owned the car for 38 years making it into the creation you see here. An original 1966 1/2 Mustang fastback with a 1 of 50 Fiberfab front-end (Fiberfab made kit car parts), 1956 354-inch Hemi V8, Chrysler two-speed push button PowerFlite transmission and factory 8 inch Ford rear end, original leaf springs in the rear, parallel leaf springs up front and factory drum brakes.

When I found the car posted on Facebook, as you can imagine it triggered a slew of polarised comments from purists all round (link below). Firstly, the initial comments will give you an idea of what people thought of the original Dodge Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird when it first came out, back in the day. The looks were too extreme and it didn’t sell very well. It’s only in hindsight people appreciate what it was. however, mixing brands together in a hobby where owners support their brands and models harder than their favourite sports team is a very brave move.

Take a step back, forget about makes and models and just look at the design alone. It actually makes the overall design more sleek and elegant. No matter your opinion on this vehicle, it’s a very brave build. Find out more about the car from the links below.

There has always been this inextricable link between muscle cars and electric guitars. Maybe the links comes from them both hitting their popularity around the same time perods, but there are many parallels between electric guitars, the music they make and muscle cars.

This was all brought front of mind again for me when I recently received an email from Fender guitars advertising their latest guitar and amp package named the ‘Mustang GT’ with one of the packages called the ‘GT 40.’ Hmmmm, those words sounds familiar. Ok, the Mustang’s a pony car, but we are doing a bit of lumping in here category-wise.

We wrote about this in the past. ZZ Top Rides: Dirty Guitars And Hot Rods probably one of the most famous bands to associate cars and guitars. We also wrote about how guitars of the 60’s used the same paint as cars of the times. Look at any vintage Fender guitar from the 60’s and it reflects those popular car paint colors. This fashion carries on today with many car shows and custom vehicles showing off both cars and guitars together. Just check out the new Ibanez Joe Satriani JS2480 in ‘muscle car red or muscle car orange.’ G&L guitars released a line of instruments in vintage muscle car colors back in 2015 – Sublime Green, Go Mango, Plum Crazy and Panther Pink, straight from the Mopar catalogue. It’s one of the reasons why both sit so well visually together. Cars and guitars follow the same lines and colors, they almost changed together with the times and fashion.

Rock ‘n’ roll started to get very loud and brash in the 60’s just as muscle cars started to get ridiculous displacement and loud as thunder. By 1970 the arguable height of muscle cars, Jimi Hendrix had laid down his body of work, along with displaying a huge variety of Fender guitars to the world. Fender guitars arguably led the way with the Stratocaster started in 1954 with many early guitar catalogue showing teenagers with guitars next to the likes of a Thunderbird convertible, straight into the hot rod/car culture of the time.

musclecarguitar-

Many other rock ‘n’ roll acts became the soundtracks of many a muscle car and the main weapon of choice on the songs was the electric guitar. Led Zepplin arguably produced their finest works in the classic muscle car era. By 1970 GM had the huge 454ci. V8 and Mopars had the 426ci. Hemi. Ford the FE 428ci. V8. Just like vintage guitars, these engines are still revered today. The sound and look of cars, guitars and rock and roll became inextricably linked.

Electric guitars can even mimic the sound of a muscle car revving up. Use heaps of distortion, dip that whammy bar, then and bring it slowly back up. It’s a trick used many a time by guitarists for decades.

Watch any muscle car video and it generally has a distorted, electric guitar soundtrack of some kind. The high-energy response fits so well together, the music, the instruments and the cars. Doing a quick search online for ‘muscle cars and guitars’ there are simpler loads of images of both standing together, which makes me think this could be a great addition to every cars and coffee event. Display your guitars, along with your cars.

If you check out Walt Grace vintage car museum, they have an equal amount of vintage electric guitars and cars on display . This article from guitar player magazine links up guitars and hot rods displayed very nicely.

The build and ongoing influence of both will have close ties forevermore. Cars and guitars just simply go together like cheese and onion or any other de-facto culinary combo. They are both functional works of art and have grown up with popular culture, being symbols of freedom and equality. Loud, brash and in your face, both have the ability to make you feel like you’re in your prime years, whatever your age. So, if you own one, try and get the other, it’s a match made in heaven.

Ok, it’s an Olympic ice skater built more like Phil Heath, but it proves the point that modern Mopars with all that rear end power can slip and slide like the best drift cars, then go and run an effortless quarter-mile time.

Rare options on a muscle car can make the difference between prices being average or life changing. It’s usually in combination like with a certain paint color, engine, etc. for a certain model year, with some of those options down the years being only available for a short period of time. The options may be more obvious like a convertible rather than a hardtop or more obscure like some interior items. you are

This is not an exhaustive list, more as a prompt for if you are looking at a certain muscle car to check out its VIN, fender and door tags for certain ‘codes’ that hopefully the other cars don’t possess. To decipher these option codes you will have to do a little research, but there are plenty of websites with a database where you can look up these codes. We’ve listed a few below –

Mustangs – http://www.vintage-mustang.com/topics/decode/decode.html
Mopars – http://www.mymopar.com/tools.htm
Camaros – http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml
Firebirds – http://www.transamworld.com/fbird-vin.php

Essentially, it’s good practice to run through the codes on the VIN, fender and door tags for a muscle car you potentially want to buy. The best conditioned vehicles should have this done for you in some form of paperwork, but if you’re looking at a barn find car you’ll have to potential do the work yourself.

1970 Plymouth Barracuda with Quarter-Panel Scoop
mopar options

Option code M46 on a ’70 Cuda was a Elastomeric rear quarter-panel air scoop in front of the rear wheels, along with matte black lower-body trim with white and red pinstripes. Apparently only 450 were built.

1968 Pontiac GTO with Endura-Delete
Option code 674 on the 1968 GTO came in the form of a Endura polyurethane foam front bumper which had a steel core. Only 2108 GTOs were produced in 1968.

1970 Ford XL with Dualtone Paint
Only 2700 Dualtone paint version of the XL were produced, but could be found in a number of colour combinations.

1972 Plymouth Satellite Coupe with V21/V25 Hood/Deck Stripes
plymouthsatelite

Codes V21 and V25 are were the options of twin flat-black hood/rear deck stripes when the Air Grabber hood was ordered. The base Satellite, Sebring and Sebring-Plus could also be ordered with these options.

1972 Buick Skylark Sun Coupe
This option was available for the Skylark 350 hardtop. It included a vinyl folding sunroof available in white, black, sandalwood, tan, brown, or green and the choice of carpet colours – bright gold or bright red, although black or sandalwood. American Sunroof Corporation performed the work and said there was around 1127-3943 produced and 6 GSs.

1970 Pontiac GTO Humbler
Vacuum operated exhaust (VOE). Around 233 built, 212 hardtop coupes and 21 convertbiles all with YS” 400ci/350 hp V8 engines.

1965 Mustang cloth seat inserts
Code 56/76

1970 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ HURST 4 speed

It’s that time of year again when the muscle car owners of Finland gather together to show off their rides, both classic and contemporary. The cruise night was held in Market Square, Helsinki, Finland and features a bit of everything here from old classic muscle cars, new ponies, trucks and a few other performance cars thrown into the mix.

Muscle and pony cars may have their centre in the US, but in nearly every other country in the world there are enthusiasts and Finland proves the point very well. The video gives a nice cross-section of the many vehicles from the event, many being straight originals – fords, Gm’s, Mopars, but there are some custom creations thrown in there for good measure. It’s only a short video so well worth checking out to see how muscle car fans from the rest of the world gather together and enjoy each other’s rides.

Mike Hall is the owner of a 340 vintage car collection currently up for sale, which also includes a 900-square-foot restoration shop, 5 acres of land with plenty of vintage muscle cars thrown into the mix. The listing is for the full collection at around $1.45 million and is said to be ‘Zoned ALR but grandfathered for auto wrecking business.’ There is also a 1,200-square-foot steel building and enough materials to build another ‘8,000 square feet of covered space.’

Mike sells the cars online individually, but now the whole lot is going at once. The collection on the current property started 40 years ago after his wife protested at the amount of Dodge and Fords building up. Like any keen car collector, it gets the point where there are too many vehicles to possibly restore, so some eventually have to go.

There is clearly a bit of everything here especially in classic muscle car territory, ranging from total wrecks to almost restored vehicles. There are plenty of images to wade through via the official listing link below, but to get a better of idea of what’s available it’s better to jump over to his website, where he lists for sale many of the vehicles you see in the images. There are complete and partial restorations, Dodge, Ford, GM, AMCs, loads of trucks and plenty of parts and plenty of ‘others’ in the mix.

It looks like individual cars and parts are still available for sale on their website, along with the total sale of the yard. If you fancy relocating up to Tappen, Canada, amongst acres of vintage cars, this could be the listing for you.

Checking out the most searched for vehicles in 2018 revealed an interesting line-up, especially when you look at the most searched for car companies and individual models. As we are obviously seeing how muscle cars are rated in the pack and the US is the center of the breed (searching globally would mean even some of the other big car companies will be lost in the mix), this was the global area searched along with the last current month of data being Match of this year.

The top searched car companies in the US has Chevrolet at number 1 being in the top 10 for 41 months, with Dodge at number 2 – top 10 for 171 months and Ford number 8 in the top 10 for 135 months. As dedicated US car brands you will probably expect something like these placings, but there is still plenty of competition from the rest of the car world meaning the big three haven’t been resting on their laurels.

Compare this to the most searched for individual models. The Ford Mustang comes in at number 1, Chevy Camaro at number 5, Chevy Corvette at number 8 and interestingly Dodge Charger B bodies at number 13.

The Ford Mustang arguably being so numerous and its long history will always show a high-ranking, but Dodge being at number two in the list of most searched car companies means Mopars and thus muscle cars are still front of mind for many when searching for vehicles. Obviously, the whole range of vehicles has to be considered, but it does lean this way.

Mustangs, Camaros and Corvettes rules the top 10, but having the Dodge Charger B body at 13 made between 1966 and 1978, means also the classics are still a favourite.

Pony and muscle cars are still a niche market compared to the vast expanse of the rest of the automotive world, but still as popular as ever.

Pretend you live in Europe and what you want in your next car is something a bit different than the usual European offerings. Something a bit more raw and fun, American and houses a V8 engine. You could import a vehicle, but what if something was available which ticked all the boxes already on your shores?

The Mustangs is available in Europe with the steering wheel on the wrong side or right side depending on how you look at it, which means Europeans can enjoy V8 fun without feeling like they are sitting in the gutter. However, if you want the pick of the bunch, both old and new, you eventually realise that you will need to get used to the wheel being on the other side. It’s a shame that there are no Mopars in right hand drive, but you have to select the options your given.

The Mustang GT350 reviewed in this video is on the default side and gives you a good impression on how a Brit. views the GT350 on native roads. Although the Mustang is commonplace in the US, it’s more of an exotic rarity in the UK. It’s a bit like meeting your cousin from across the water you have not seen in years. There are very familiar, but they have little quirks and oddities which stand out from the norm.

Suffice to say, in the middle of a country filled with four cylinder cars, the Mustangs stands out proudly and there’s nothing better than being a bit of an exception to the norm.

As reported on ABC15.com the Arizona Department of Public Safety fleet have a bunch of muscle cars, i.e Chargers, which they use to catch unsuspecting aggressive drivers, speeders, tailgaters and wild lane changers. Constantly on the move, the cars are unmarked and make their presence known when the lights come on and the throaty V8 kicks into gear.

The video highlights Trooper Jason Seeger in his silver Dodge Charger and how the vehicles are put to use on the streets. Although the cars are unmarked, the idea is still to show the general public that the police have more than just traditional vehicles in their fleet. Bad guys and road abusers beware, a Mopar is potentially watching your every move.

The great thing here is that they chose Mopars over the vast range of vehicles out there (hmmm, no Hondas with turbos??!?). I suspect having the gruff sound of a high revving V8 with undercover police lights is going to get anyone’s attention, along with the beefy looks and performance of a Charger. Plus, if you’re going to drive around all day for your job, you might as well get some enjoyment at the same time, which will always be the case behind the wheel of a Mopar, but clearly that’s secondary…..ahem!

Brand rivalry and allegiance can run deep for a car fan and much of this can stem back to the origins of the companies themselves. Dodge and Ford have woven in and out of each other’s histories from day one and this short video gives you a nice re-cap of both companies, how they crossed paths and the results which echo even today.

The Dodge Bros. and Henry Ford were both talented machinists and were both from Michigan. With the size of Ford today and the reputation of Henry Ford as a person, you would think this automotive powerhouse was ahead of the game from the beginning. However, it was the Dodge Brothers who initially had the financial resources to see the potential of Henry Ford and his ideas while others wouldn’t even touch him with a prop. shaft after a few failed attempts at building a car company.

As with all innovative, creative types, they soon parted to go their own ways, but the partnership allowed Henry Ford to build the model T and the Dodge Bros. to produce the foundations of their company and make a nice tidy profit from Ford at the same time.

Both parties could be seen as pioneers, forward thinkers and eccentrics and although present-day Mopars and Fords seem poles apart, the early days had more in common than we may initially think. Wouldn’t it be interesting if we could resurrect both the Dodge Bros and Henry Ford to see what they thought of their vehicles today, like the GT500, Dodge Demon, Mustang, Charger and even some of the atrocities they made the mid-80s!

Check out the full video as it gives a great overview of how both these companies came into being and the standards they set for today.

Richard Petty may have more of an association with Mopars and Pontiacs on the track, but he’s definitely had links with GM over the years. Therefore, it’s no surprise that somewhere down the line he has bumped shoulders with Camaros. This 1969 Camaro was produced in association with Continental tires and West Coast Customs to produce the following vehicle you see here.

The subdued black with yellow stripes adds a cool, but sinister look to the car with a custom air dam, custom wheels and Continental tires, sat on a LS-based engine. The video is more of a handing over of the car, rather than small specific details being described, but it does show how beautifully subdued this Camaro really is.

The UK may not be the first place you would think of as a haven for muscle cars, but you don’t have to dig too deep to find lovers of the breed and their fair share of muscle car clubs and events. The American Auto Club International (AACI) have just had their own show at Billing Aquadrome which features tons of classics along with prizes for Best in show, loads of entertainment and plenty of other types of Americana vehicles.

The video below shows many of the vehicles exiting the event, with a nice selection from prime classics to modern American sports, pony and muscle cars. Like any good American car show you get to view everyone from GM, Ford and Mopars with a few other ripe classics thrown into the mix. The second video give you a nice look around the event to give you a nice idea what’s on offer.

The V8 rumble of the American classics is also a stark contrast to all the modern vehicles, which just like everywhere now follows more standardised, conservative lines nowhere near as creative looking as the vehicles of old.

If you want a one-stop shop to see every variety of rare muscle car in existence, the closest you can possibly get is the Mark Pieloch American Muscle Car Museum, 3500 Sarno Road, Melbourne, Florida 32934. There are over 250 vehicles amongst other collectables all brought together by Mark Pieloch who made his mark in the veterinary pharmaceuticals arena. The whole collection is reported to be worth over $32 million and growing every year.

All the vehicles are housed in a 123,000 square-foot, open plan warehouse with 90,000 sqft dedicated to the vehicle displays, the rest being showrooms, maintenance and restoration areas. The collection includes over 24 Yenko Camaros one for every make and model produced, 42 Indy 500 pace cars, more than 30 Shelby’s, Ford GT 40s and plenty of Mustangs amongst others.

GM vehicles are here in numbers spanning the whole vintage muscle car range from Buicks to Oldsmobile, with many rarities like a Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet. There are also many rare Mopars covering everything that can house a 426 Hemi or a 440 6-Pak, like Charger Daytonas up to a recent Challenger SRT Demon. Basically, if you can think of a rare muscle car, it’s probably under this roof. It’s probably easier to list what isn’t there.

Checking out their website you will be literally drooling over the amount of rare muscle cars, many with a breakdown of their specs. with images and some videos. There is an on-site restoration crew who specialise in finding the best examples of the breed to restore for the collection.

There’s plenty of other non-muscle car vehicles here, along with other collectables adorning the walls and other areas, but the catch is that it’s not completely open to the public. The collection operates on an appointment and invitation basis. Instead the facility operates for nonprofit fundraisers and mostly educational purposes, but checking out their website they do have an events calendar throughout the year if you’re lucky enough to be invited. If you’re in any way a muscle car fan, this should surely be on your bucket list.

This is going to be one exciting auction on 3rd June 2018. Bonhams will be auctioning Carroll Shelby’s personal car collection in Greenwich CT 06830 and as you can imagine, will feature some delectable dishes totalling 24 vehicles which will include cars and trucks. Carroll Shelby is arguably one of the pioneers of muscle cars and this auction is not to be missed.

The vehicles on offer will feature both Fords and Mopars representing his association with both ends of the car spectrum. Their worth is not just being owned by Carroll himself, but limited number vehicles, prototypes and ones associated with the rich and famous. A 1969 Shelby GT 500 from Jackie Cooper Jr., a 1935 Chrysler Airflow Sedan from Steve McQueen. The classics will include 2 1969 Shelby GT 500s, 1968 Shelby GT350, a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Continuation and a 1967 Lincoln Continental.

From the many more modern rarities are included – 1999 Shelby 1 Series chassis 0001, a 2011 Shelby Cobra CSX 8027, 1982 Dodge Shelby Charger Prototype, 1983 Dodge/Shelby pickup concept, 1987 Dodge CSX no. 1, 1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S no. 1, 1987 Dodge Shelby Lancer no. 1, 1988 Dodge Shelby Dakota Prototype, 1989 Dodge CSX VNT no. 1, a 2008 Shelby GT500 KR and a 2011 Shelby GT500 Super Snake. An Oldsmobile-powered 1999 Series 1 from Shelby American being chassis 0001 is also available.

Vehicles that don’t clearly fit into the other slots include 2 De Tomasos, a 1987 GT5-S, a 1983 Pantera and a 1955 DeSoto. All vehicles have no reserve price. You can find out more details on the Bonhams website link below, but suffice to say that this is probably going to be the auction of the year.

A drag race between two vehicles is always a nice surface comparison, but in reality there are so many variables that can influence the race. Factors such as tire pressure, atmospheric pressure, driving surfaces and driver’s skill are big influencers. However, in this head-to-head race between a Charger and a Challenger it’s a fun comparison to see what relatively new vehicles with the same engines can do lined up against each other.

Both vehicles were stock and only have drag radials. No other information given on each car setup, like transmission types, etc. in the video but take this race as just a fun track day to see which of these two mopars will win the day. There are a few other races between the Charger and Challenger against other makes and models as a nice comparison.

Southwest Virginia’s New River Valley features a warehouse which is home to probably the largest private car collection known to man. The 900+ vehicles are owned by Gary Duncan and include everything from the vintage to the modern and all makes and models you could possibly imagine.

Gary Duncan who has run car dealerships all his life, has been collecting cars like no other for many years and they are now housed in a 110,000-square-foot warehouse, some now available to buy. The collection is about as eclectic as you can get in the automotive world from domestic to imported vehicles and in many cases more than one example. Due to having so many vehicles he has now formed the company Duncan Imports and Classic Cars to sell a select few.

duncan-collection-

Although there are many imports in the collection and this seems to the main focus, the other areas of interest are obvious classics. There are plenty of vintage Corvettes in the collection, a few Mopars here and there and if you go to his website directly at Duncanimports.com there seems to be some definite American classics and muscle cars in the lineup. Just checking out the ‘Dodge’ section of his website reveals a 1971 Dodge Challenger and a 73 Dodge Dart. 33 entries in the Chevrolet section, which include a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS currently in his private collection, a 1970 Buick Gran Sport 455, 1970 Plymouth Cuda 340 and a few nice Oldsmobiles to name but a few.

No matter your preferences for vehicles, Gary Duncan seems to have collected enough vehicles to please the majority of people out there. If you’re in this part of the world at any time its advisable to check out his warehouse, even if it is to just walk around and see the vast amounts of unusual and classic cars available.

This listing on craigslist is a whole host of Mopar’s seemingly ranging from Dodge, Chryslers, Plymouths and Desotos all in various rusty states. How many cars there are in total is unclear, but all are in need of a thorough restoration.

There doesn’t seem to be any ultra-rarities here, but there is enough of a choice for any vintage Mopar fan to get enthusiastic. There are a few Desotos in here like a Fireflite, an early 60’s Dodge lancer and a 1960 Chrysler Windsor Golden Lion, giving you an idea of the inventory. The Patina on some of these cars would look great. Just clear glossed over or even as ratty hot rods.

There is are no details on the ad. to say which cars have powertrains and such, so it’s a matter of heading down to silver Spring, near Washington if you are interested in one or more of these vehicles.

Available here on craigslist

Dodge hellcats with 707 hp and the Scat Pack with ‘only’ 485hp are ideal candidates for serious racing which has been brought together in the form of MATS ‘Mopars At The Strip.’

There are two classes, The Scat Pack Challenge and the Hellcat Shootout which require cars to be registered and licensed for the street, then any mods are allowed.

To give you an idea of times last year’s hellcat winner Al Jiminez won with a time of 10.96/128.8mph and David Boyer won in the Scat Pack class with a time of 12.04/117.3mph.

You can find the full story with competitors over a Hot Rod.

Our idea on fast muscle cars is to aggregate all the muscle car information in one place for you all to enjoy. This also seems to be a case for Stephens Performance in Alabama who have arguably the widest array of Mopars in the world.

This three-part video series was put together by the fantastic Auto Archaeology and features an impressive array of all things Mopar from Plymouths, Cudas, Dodge Challengers, Chargers, Coronets, Superbees and everything in between. It’s a veritable elephants graveyard of classic muscle.

Should the competition be concerned about the new Dodge SRT Demon? Well, to start with the FCA just cannot find new names for there cars apparently. The Demon was a car unto itself years ago but the Fiat owned Dodge is banking on yet another old name to earn some sales.

Yes, from all outward appearances the new Dodge Demon will be a faster Challenger than the stock Hemi. Yes it will have some unique items about the car but if you really strip away the fluff you have yourself a Challenger.

Nothing wrong with that as the Challenger has proven to be a very quick car with the 707 hp Hellcat engine. Sales were off the charts when first introduced but have slowed down quite a bit of late. So, Fiat was determined to earn back some customers by using a decades old name again to revive the cars standing.

I guess they had to do something since Chevrolet announced the nasty ZL1 Camaro that is a stunning creature on and off the track. Ford has there GT350 out there that has won numerous awards and seems to be ready to stand the test of time. Now, we here of yet another GT500 in the making with possibly twin turbo chargers in a eco boost style engine. The V6 is gone as buyers were buying the Mustang for its power and looks.

Mopar lovers are clamoring for a two door version of a Charger and it’s a bit mystifying why Fiat has not made that move yet. The Charger would be a hot item once again as a two door car with the Hellcat under the hood. It will make the buyers of say the 2009-2010 Challengers bite there tongue as they watch there cars plummet in value as the new breed of Mopars come on strong.

But, I return you to the original point. Should the competition be concerned about the new Dodge Demon? This guy does not believe so. Loyalty still runs deep in the big three. Chevy lovers will need to shell out just over 63k for a ZL1. Ford lovers are writing checks for the current GT350 for about the same price. And third place Fiat is nearly the same for the Hellcat Challengers. The Demon will add a few bucks to your check but the Mopar lovers won’t mind at all. So, the answer to the question is – No.

The competition is good for all three major brands. It forces each of the big three to up there game and leave no stone unturned in the race for your money. We will just need to sit back and watch this battle unfold in the months ahead. It ought to be a good one for sure.

Seems like every other day some big OEM has a major announcement.
The latest out of FCA is the Dodge Demon shown here. Now, we all know back in the seventies Dodge had a Dodge Demon with a 340 engine. It was very fast because the car was lightweight. So, like the other OEM’s Fiat or FCA is bringing back a version of that car. And that my friends ticks me off.

Why? Well, I love Mopars of old, and Fords and yes certain GM models. What I don’t like is the use of old proven names of the past used again and again. Is it really that hard to come up with a new name? They all do it of course. When I was at Barrett Jackson, Mark Fields of Ford said they were going to bring back the Bronco in less than three years. Yipeeee. We certainly do not have enough SUV’s out there now so let’s bring another one on board.

Now, as for the hot rods. FCA is using the Challenger name plate of course for a car that looks a lot like the Challenger of old. Ford is using the name Mustang of course for its version of the new Stang that looks a lot like the one from the late sixties. Not to be outdone, Chevy has the Camaro today that looks a lot like the Camaro we all loved in the days gone by.

All the car companies tease us with spy photos and photos like the one pictured here. It gets us drooling and talking about buying one when available. I get that of course. Pre sale events are designed to get everyone babbling about what is to come. But, using names from the past pissses me off. Sorry. But does anyone who lived in the sixties and seventies think today’s Dodge Charger resembles the Charger of old? No way. Will this Challenger Demon resemble the Demon of old? Nope.

Will the new Bronco look like anything like the old Bronco? I highly doubt it. So, can these highly educated people come up with a new name? It reminds me of today’s Volkswagen. Maybe they would sell more cars if someone, anyone could pronounce the names of the vehicle. What is so hard about this. Can’t FCA build a two door door hot rod that resembles a Demon and then call it a Demon? If you buy one of these cars most people will think you bought a Challenger- which you did.

I am as old as Moby Dick I guess but what’s so darn hard about building a car and giving it a name that has not been used forty plus years ago. I know they are going after your memories and wallets but it shows no imagination at all. It’s a bitch when you understand the best selling vehicle in the United States is a pick up truck for the last 40 years!

Back in the fast muscle car days it was not a truck. We had cars. We had cars that looked different from one another, rode different, and were loved. Today all the cars look alike. I read a quote from a big shot at GM recently. I cannot quote him now but the basis of his talk was that in very short order cars from GM will start to look very different. I guess that means you will be able to tell a Buick from a Chevy Bolt after all. I wish I could write an open letter to the OEM’s and ask them if they are going to build a new styled hot rod today, please leave the past where it belongs and have the nuts to be different. Back in the sixties and early nineteen seventies you knew a Chevy Nova with a 396 was very different than a Dodge Charger with a 383 under the hood. They rocked. Why do you think our fast muscle cars are and were used so often in car movie chases?

Imagine Bullit with McQueen in a Chevy Malibu and the two assassins in a Ford Fusion. The movie would go to DVD and Netflix in a month and forgotten in six months. Yet, the movie as we know it lives big. Same with Vanishing Point and many other movies that used our hot rods. So, please you car builders think outside the 2×4 box you sit in. What’s next? A new Ford Maverick? A Chevy Monza, or a Dodge Aspen. Oh wait they did that already and it bombed. Imagine that.

RR1

By Mark Weisseg

My old friend is a big time Mopar guy. He had a 69 RR and I own a 69 Road Runner. How cool is that? Well, I made the mistake of telling him I really would like to own a 1970 like what is pictured here. As my old friend he can say anything to me and I accept his comments. He is a smart guy and even drag raced the older Mopars at one point. So, what he said next has been stuck in my pea sized brain since I came home. He said they were boxy, a bit ugly and got away from looking like a Road Runner should. After I picked myself up from the floor I asked him WTF? That means what do you mean sir for those you don’t understand acronyms.

I loved that 70 style. I dig the 383 and the 440. It did not matter if it was a four speed with a pistol grip shifter or an automatic. It did not matter if it had bucket seats or a bench. It did not matter even if it had only one rear speaker for a AM radio or not. To me it’s cool. I proceeded to tell him I came within minutes of buying a Hemi orange one three years ago that had a 440 planted under the hood with a reliable 727 torque flight transmission.

I only changed my mind when the 69 was presented to me. He held his ground but I was not backing down. I told him that the 68, 69, and 70 were the best years ever. He agreed on two of three of course but I could not get him to budge on that 70. I was so frustrated I almost bought this 1970 just to prove a point. Lucky for me it sold before I came to my senses. Chrysler made a lot of Road Runners in those three years and a lot are still around. I still get smiles and thumbs up when I drive my 69 down the road. It harkens back a lot of positive memories I guess for many people.

It’s only after the switch in 1971 that Chrysler lost me. That new style in ’71 still in my book is not a RR. So, my friend is still my friend in Phoenix. We met at the tender age of five so why screw it up now. But, I still cannot believe anyone would not love a 70 Road Runner. What’s next, not loving a Ford Pinto with wood paneling?

I saw this picture and immediately fell in love. How cool would this be to walk out of the house and into this heaven? It’s a tight squeeze I guess but if you have these birds in your garage I am jealous. These birds are selling for huge numbers today. Of course there is the crowd that puts there nose in the air if it is not a Hemi but not me. The 440 engine was the engine of choice back in the day. The hemi was an option and back in 1970 nearly everyone thought the 440 was enough. It was and is of course.

However, if you stumble onto a bird with a 426 Hemi find a way to remortgage the house or steal the kids college money because you will need it and more. I know a guy who has a 70 Bird with a 440 engine. Automatic transmission and the shifter is on the column. The car has less than 6k on the odometer. The hard part is some snobs will walk up to the car and see that it does not have the 426 and start whining. Are you kidding me? The SuperBird was not a sales champion at the dealers back in 1970. Many people did not want to drive a car that had a big wing on the back and a curved front grill to go get groceries. Many Dodge Daytona and Plymouth SuperBirds sat on the lots much longer than anyone imagined. And fast forward to our time and they are so rare and so expensive the average collector will never own one.

Many younger people do not believe this but it is true. Back then the talk was that it was simply a 70 Road Runner with a wing on the back and funny nose in the front and it’s odd looking they would say. Now today that funny looking car is bringing huge amounts of money. You still will not drive it to go get groceries but all Mopar fans would love the chance to own one. And that is a fact.

This years Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN) had an amazing array of Mustangs and muscle cars covering the 400,000 square feet of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.

MCACN’s mission statement says, “As producers of The Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals, we provide the ultimate gathering place for enthusiasts, young and old, who have a passion for horsepower. We host this indoor showcase for the cars that have become a part of our lives and to provide a place to revive past memories and friendships while opening the door to many new memories and friendships. About our team: unlike many other show promoters, we live and breathe cars on a daily basis. Our team is made up of fellow collectors who currently own and maintain a wide variety of collector cars ranging from AMCs to Z/28s. We have shown, raced, toured, bought, sold, and traded many wheeled vehicles and we have all traveled many miles to participate in automotive events in and outside of the U.S.A.”

mustang-1

One of the highlights of the show was the judging categories, which was split into Stock Concours, Period Correct Concours, and Street Stock/Modified.
Each car starts with a 1000 points, which are deducted for imperfections in the car, such as missing or not working parts or anything slightly not perfect.
Winners are given a gold, silver or bronze level score in their category.

Not to leave out the Mopars, there were plenty dotted around the place, such as this incredible looking 1968 Dodge Charger to name but one.

For those of us that own a 69 Road Runner we consider ourselves lucky. I snatched this picture from a friends facebook page. His name is Wes Eisenschenk. He is an author among many other things but first and more importantly a 69 Road Runner owner.

Well, this picture looks as if they lined these cars up for sale or show but it’s even better than that. Back in the day Mopar was training mechanics, now technicians to problem solve. So if a car had an issue that a mechanic had to figure it out, you got the training first hand. The only way to learn is always to do it.

I had a tech work for me years ago that had straight A’s on every test. When you spoke to him he was as knowledgable as anyone I knew. But, we found out in short order he was worthless. He was book smart but needed help doing anything. He could not install shocks without help or anything else. So, we rid ourselves of Mr. Bookworm as quick as possible. When you work on a car you need to do as you learn, just having the theory is not enough.

But back to the Road Runners. Back in the day they seemed a bit complicated at times but knowing what we know now they were not. Now today it has reversed itself. Today we have a load of young techs that never saw or worked on points, condensers, distributor caps and so on. However, there are schools out there which teach you about the setup of an old classic, so the information is out there.

It’s all relative I guess, but, I sure wish I could get in my time machine and see all those 69 beauties all lined up with direct information from Mopar. What a show that would have been.

This is a series of videos from Auto archaeology showing that these muscle car rarities are still tucked away around the country just waiting to be restored.

There is a lot to choose from here. Mainly Mopar’s with a few Fords and other types thrown in, but the main thing is the incredible stash of cars that are just begging to be restored.
As you can see in the second video, it’s not always in barns or remote areas. Some are tucked away in the back of old showrooms.
Here you have Cudas, a Daytona, a ’68 Hemi Superbee, etc…. The list goes on. Cars you would have thought would have been restored years ago.

It almost seems remarkable that cars that have such potential value have been left for decades, but these vehicles easily become just part of the furniture and landscape, until the owners forget about their potential.
It’s not until guys like Auto Archaeology come along and remind the owners, that interest picks up again.

It’s a reminder to everybody out there. Check out these old barns and ask around. You never know, you may just come across a rarity such as the ones you see here.

The city of Indianapolis, on May 17th – 21st, 2016 was a hotbed for some of the finest Mopars on the planet.

The auction has now turned into a near full week of classic car bidding, with obvious interest going to the most rare and prized of the vehicles.

This 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Pro Stock, estimated to fetch between $850,000 – $1,100,000 was one of the prize Mopars on auction as you can see from the description and highlights below, has a wealth of history to backup this incredible car.

As for Sox, how well did he do in 1971? Of the eight final rounds of NHRA Pro Stock that season, Sox was in six of them and won all appearances, meaning he lost just two rounds of racing the entire season! Victories at Pomona, Gainesville, Dallas, Montreal, Indianapolis and Ontario signaled true dominance, one which NHRA determined would never occur again for the Hemi engine when it drastically rewrote the rules for 1972. In fact, Ronnie Sox would never win another NHRA national event following this season, nor would any 426 Hemi win another Pro Stock World Championship. Sox also won five IHRA crowns as well as two open events with the Cuda in 1971.

The car being offered here is noted as the same one that Sox campaigned that year. Beginning with an acid-dipped shell, the vehicle had been very carefully created to allow mild forward movement of the wheelbase to create the exact NHRA legal balance of 48-percent front/52-percent rear weight distribution. It utilized 1971 Road Runner rear wheelhouses for tire clearance, and the thin shell was hard-foam-filled to prevent flexing at higher speeds; for structural reasons, the now-mandated full-roll cage as a result was another big advancement and help made the car consistently fast and able to withstand the abuse of 4-speed-pounded Hemi power. Coupled with King’s precise engine construction and Sox’s lightning-fast shifting skill, the final package was literally unbeatable in NHRA Pro Stock, failing just once mechanically and being outdriven just once, at the 1971 NHRA World Finals.

The car was located while still being actively raced as a sportsman car in 2003 and was first verified by original Sox & Martin team-fabricator Christie as being a Sox & Martin-constructed car, and evidence based on secondary ownership pointed to it being the 1971 Barracuda that Ronnie drove himself. Before the restoration began, Christie signed a letter of agreement that verified that this car is the original 1971 Sox & Martin team car that was campaigned by Ronnie Sox in 1971. The restoration process was done with great care to maintain as much of the acid-dipped body as possible due to the car’s later racing modifications. Still surprisingly intact, fiberglass from the original supplier was secured for the front clip, and attention soon turned to making sure all the details were faithfully represented on the refurbishment. Noted collector, Mike Guarise, consigned the car to Mecum’s 2007 Belvidere auction where it was acquired by the current owner.

Based on research, this car was also the final NHRA-winning machine of Ronnie Sox, from the final year that the Hemi engine dominated the class. Indeed, sans the rules revisions, there was no end in sight to Sox’s capabilities in this car; as Plymouth wryly noted in 1965 advertising when NASCAR took a similar tact against the engine—“If you can’t beat them, outlaw them!” Featured among the standard-bearers in the book “Million-Dollar Muscle Cars,” one determined buyer could continue this amazing legacy with this extremely rare opportunity to own a real Sox & Martin vehicle.

There have been quite a few videos going around social media recently of Mustangs coming out of car shows, losing control and crashing. Most of the videos give the impression that the Mustangs flip out so easily and the cars can’t handle the power thrown down to the wheels.
GM and Mopars guys have probably watched these videos loads of times, falling off their chairs laughing. However, let’s look at what has really happened.

It’s the driver, not the car
We can go through these videos forensically, second by second, but they all boil down to errors in driving judgement.
You can take any rearwheel drive car, throw down full power and hang on for your life. 9 times out of 10 you will lose control, traction control or not.

Rear wheel drive vehicles gives you a more exciting and thrilling ride as you feel you are being pushed rather than pulled like you do in a front wheel drive car. However, this also means that in a rear wheel drive car the front-end needs more control by the driver or the car will flip out or go where it wants.

So that’s what it boils down to, control and driver skill.
No matter what rear wheel drive car you own, you have to learn how the car reacts, fast and slow. If you want the thrill of the ride, you need to learn how to tame it…

Only an hour away from the birthplace of Carroll Shelby, Longview, Texas, houses one of the best private collections of Shelby automobiles in the country.

Joe McMurrey has collected Shelby vehicles for many years, along with Gm’s and Mopars also for sale, but the focus of the auction will be 17 Shelby vehicles, including a 1965 Shelby GT350 – the 41st car built, a 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 roadster, a 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible and a a 1970 Ford Boss 302 Kar Kraft Trans Am racer.

The usual holy grail in car acquisitions is the barn or field find, but in some instances, it can be just people getting rid of their toys or collection.

This guy is ‘selling all my toys’ which seems to include a drag car, a Chevelle, a few Mopars, Chevy’s, Fords and Oldsmobiles, mostly looking like they need some work performing on them in one way or another.

There is not much information on each car with the listing, so if you are interested, you need to contact the guy and get specific details.
Like any collection of this type, there are always some interesting examples in the collection, so get on down there and see if anything interests you.

This is the latest readers rides entry showing that the girls are just as interested in muscle cars as anybody else and as you will read, fight all the way to keep these incredible rides.

Over to Dawn to tell you all the story behind the car…….

‘I bought Miss Kitty in November 2012 as a 50th birthday present for myself. I’ve loved the old Mopars all my life, and I have owned several, just not the E body style.
She is pristine inside and out, no rust anywhere, modified just a tad, with a 440 4-barrel engine.

Only seven months after purchasing her and so enjoying driving her, in May 2013, as I was sitting at an intersection waiting for a red light to change, I was rear ended by a distracted driver, driving approximately 60 miles an hour when she hit me.
My injuries were extensive, and so were the injuries to Miss Kitty. She was smashed up badly.

1973-Dodge-Challenger-6575

But, being in that old car on that summer night probably saved my life. I couldn’t let that old car go. As much as my attorney and insurance company wanted me to just walk away, I just couldn’t.
She saved me. And I was on a quest to save her.
Her restoration is supposed to cost over $41,000.

After a long battle with attorneys and the insurance companies, this summer, over two years later post crash, I was awarded a settlement, and just a week ago, Miss Kitty began her restoration.

She should be finished with her restoration by the end of May or first part of June. After that, there will be lots and lots more photos!
I plan on taking her across the country, and to all of the big Mopar shows that I wanted to participate in that first year that I had her. I will be up at Carlisle, and also at Mopar fest in Canada…Driving, of course. She is no trailer queen!’

Stay tuned for further updates, when the car will be fully restored and completed.

‘1971 Dodge Charger {383/300 HP}………J/SA
Dave was ‘one smart guy’.
When Mopar lowered the 1971 – 383 Horsepower rating to {300 HP} from {335 HP in 1970}, Dave jumped all over the 1971 Dodge B-Body.
It fit perfect into the 1971 J/SA Class {11.50 – 11.99 Wt/Hp}’
‘Finding the right car to fit at the bottom of a given class’ weight break was what it was about back then. No such thing as adjusting or subtracting up to 250 lbs. to make a class.’

This car has racing pedigree, tons of documentation and overall one cool looking Mopar.
For racing and Challenger fans out there, this is one car you should check out.

‘This is one of the winning-est super stock mopars/challengers of all time.
No need to endlessly search for documentation for this car…. Known race history and a stack of paperwork, articles, photos, and magazines stacked two feet high.
Came as a original body-in-white from Chrysler Corp. Cage was installed by Herb McCandless.
Mint original exterior trim and interior.
I just freshened the original race short block and updated the heads, rocker gear, and camshaft.
Fresh all aluminum 727 with straight cuts and torringtons.
All safety items have been updated, seat belts, tires, brakes, etc… Always a great car.
Not just a display car, this thing can be raced and should be as intended.
I have owned several historical race cars over the years and equivalently this is the trickest mopar super stock i have ever seen. We have all heard the stories about this car and i truly optimizes the ultimate between the lines of the rule book super stocker’

‘It will take a while to get used to!’ says the video below.
If there is a Cuda to stop you in your tracks, this is the one, just maybe not for the reasons you would have thought of!

Right Hand Drive.
VIN: BH27D72261091.
Transmission: Automatic
Engine: 8 Cylinder, 273 L.
Current bid: US $5,000.00

Before you wade through all the text below, this seems to be a Cuda built for the UK market with right hand drive and is one that has completely slipped through the net, even the Chrysler Corporate Historical Collection were surprised by this one!
A Cuda with a British flag paint job….. not so sure….it just makes it, well, too British for me for what is meant to be an American thoroughbred, but the main attraction about this vehicle is its super rarity.
As a collectors or investment piece this would make a great buy, but could you live with the British flag paint job? ( This is not a British flag bashing exercise, it is a questioning of why you would put any nation’s flag completely over a car. It’s too obvious a statement.)
A bit like an Austin Healey or E Type Jaguar being made for the US market with a Stars & Stripes paint job. It’s like the car is trying too hard to be something else or fit in.
Originally it had ‘PP1 red paint in engine compartment’ as below, so the flag paint job is an after market thing and seemingly not a full rotisserie paint job if the engine compartment, door jams, and trunk are still the original color.

A true rarity, but for an American muscle car, why oh why didn’t GM just put a tiny little British flag somewhere on the car or call it the ‘British edition’ if they had to, it would have been just as rare, just without a massively distracting British flag.

The irony about this car is it is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. So, did the car make it to the UK and then come back to US soil or did it never leave??

Then again, if they make another Austin Powers film, here’s the car…..maybe.

‘One of the Mopars that even Chrysler didn’t think existed’
‘Built at Hamtrack for the English market.’

‘Information obtained from the Mopar Muscle Association (MMA) of Great Britain said that the RHD Barracuda could be purchased in England only from Warwick Wright, a dealership with connection to Chrysler through Rootes. The information that MMA had gathered over the years was that in 1967 there were fastback and notch-back RHD Barracudas with 273 V-8 engines, but no convertibles. For 1968 and 1969 there were fastback, notch-back and convertibles with 318 V-8 engines. I have a copy of a letter from a volunteer at Chrysler Historic which states there were 17 right hand drive Barracuda convertibles built for export in 1968. No information for 1967 or 1969 is included in the letter, but I have heard there were possibly 9 for 1969, but NONE for 1967.’

‘A road test review of the Barracuda by Autocar magazine published in August, 1967 also stated Warwick Wright Ltd to be the ‘concessionaires’ for Chrysler imports direct from the USA. They drove a fastback, and gave mention to a notch-back (i.e., hardtop) and convertible being available in the line. It stated that all would have 4.5 litre (273 ci) engine and automatic transmission, with heavy duty suspension and anti-sway bar for European spec requirements.

Paragraph on the RHD build:

I have tried to puzzle out where all the parts and pieces are from to turn this regular Hamtramck Barracuda into a RHD export. Some of the high points:

– firewall stamped opposite of LHD

– wiper motor on other side so wipers go “backwards”, and wiper arms are stamped RHD

– dash is from a Valiant, near as I can tell, because of the square instrument cluster – seems like it would be easy enough to transpose that instrument cluster from the left to the right without any modification

– turn signal lever is on the right

– gas is still on the right, brake on the left

British specs and safety standard requirements:

– Amber / orange lights on the rear trim panel

– Built seat belt delete and had special anchor plates and seat belt with shoulder strap added; plate stating the vehicle meets British standards for seat belt anchorage points screwed onto inner fender wall

– Headrests added and handwritten notation on build sheet

– Outside mirror delete (for left-hand side)

– Radio delete, with a Motorola installed by Warwick Wright, LTD in England

– Heavy duty suspension that would have been with the Formula S package

– 323 sure-grip 7-1/4 rear end

Documentation includes:

– Certicard (no owner’s name stamped in)

– Fender tag

– 1 full, nice build sheet and 1 partial

– Tag stating Valiant, Chrysler Co. Detroit, Michigan Made in USA (export tag?)

– Glovebox dealer maintenance card, having the Chrysler Corporation of North America name overlaid with a sticker saying Chrysler International S.A.

– Copy of IBM card and VIN decode from DaimlerChrylser

– Import documents from Manchester, England back to US

– “Galen Registry Letter” with fender tag and broadcast sheet decoding, stating to be 01 of 01 1967 273-2bbl Plymouth Barracuda Convertibles built to specs for Export Order (as well, he told me orally that he did not know of any other right-hand drive Barracuda Convertibles of any engine size)

The car’s scheduled production date was 1/26/67. It was a special order car, shipped from manufacture at Hamtrack to Boston Region #18, dealer McNamara Motors, Inc., in West Lebanon, NH on 2/20/67.

The car has its original short block and transmission (all rebuilt). Originally a 273 2bbl (D-code). I’ve put a factory ’67 date coded intake manifold and correct air cleaner and valve covers for a 273 Super Commando 4bbl. I’ve also added factory ’69 340 X-heads. I have the original 2bbl heads, intake and carb. Wearing original issue (not repro) 4” bolt pattern Cragar SS wheels. a small rust spot in front of the right rear tire, otherwise rust free.

rust free trunk and frame, inner fenders.

New top with correct curved glass rear window. New carpet. New windshield. New backup bezels. New bumpers. Excellent original grills. 98% original interior upholstery – 2 seam repairs on the bottom of the driver’s seat. Original PP1 red paint in engine compartment, door jams, and trunk. Now wrapped in graphic tribute to its British history.’

The Vin number  (vehicle identification number) is a chassis number to uniquely identify any vehicle.
They were first introduced in 1954, but with no clear standard of the formats at the time. In 1981 the National Highway traffic Safety Administration standardised the format in America.
Knowing how to identify the numbers will help you identify a vehicle and make sure it is what it says it is.

Online Vin Decoders
Now we know what the numbers are and what they are used for, how do we decode the numbers to get us the information we need on a particular car?

There are quite a few websites which offer a ‘Vin decoder.’ Most will give you the make, model and year of a car, while some will give you much more information about the vehicle.

Below we check out a few of the online VIN decoders by simply finding a few cars for sale on eBay, noting their VIN numbers and see if it matches up with the information from the VIN decoders online.

http://www.vin-decoder.net/
This VIN decoder seems to give a lot of information about the vehicle, not just make, model and year. It also has a VIN report plan which you can pay for, but see if you can gain as much information as you can from their free functionality.

http://www.find-your-muscle-car.com/vin-decoder.html
This site gives you more links to a rundown of the VIN numbers for Camaros, Firebirds and Mopars. It will also give you some background information on the numbers themselves. Worth a try.

http://www.vindecoderz.com/
This site is quite good as it gives you the makes in alphabetical order for you to choose from.
A Straight forward interface and plenty of information.

http://www.gates.com/catalogs-and-resources/resources/repository/engineering-business-applications/vin-decoder/vin-decoder
Aswell as a VIN decoder they have OEM parts interchange search finding parts within their website.

http://www.dmv.org/vehicle-history/vin-decoder.php
This is more descriptions of the numbers on how to identify them, but it gives you lots of information.

Like any online tools, it’s an idea to try a few of them and then the compiled the information each gives you.

The mother of all Mopars!
472 ci Hemi, 727 Torqflite automatic. (upgraded from 318.)
Original 8 3/4 rear-end w/3.23 gears.

Buy It Now Price: Price: US $89,000.00 (29th June 2015)

A fine ride we have here are some of the magic muscle car words needed – Hemi, original broadcast sheets, just no matching numbers.
With a little detailing, this could be a trailer queen, but I would definitely negotiate on the price a little.
‘…I know the market has come down a bit, thus the current listing price.’ means it’s a buyers’ market and you can haggle on the price a little.

There’s not a great amount of detail listed with this Superbird. understandably, if you are considering this ride for the money, you should know what you’re looking at, but if you are expected to part with this much money, you should have a full rundown of information.

…and here is a Cuda at the other end of the price spectrum.
Will these ‘Cuda prices keep rising? When a ‘Cuda can fetch more than say a Shelby, any barn find Cuda these days is worth looking at almost, just do the math.

This is a rare opportunity to own one of the 12 original 440-6 Barrel Cuda convertibles produced in 1970 with an auto trans. Total production was 29 cars, 12 autos and 17 4spds.

Body Restoration: The car was restored by Roger Gibson who has the best reputation for restoring Mopars in the world.
No corners were cut and the best original and date coded NOS parts were used in the restoration.
The car was restored in 1990 and looks like it was restored yesterday.
The paint is flawless and shows zero signs of age. The paint work is second to none. For example: When some restorers paint a trunk floor, the paint may look great until you look past the shock towers and way back in the hidden areas. Those areas sometimes look unfinished and flat. That is not the case here. The paint work is exceptional on every inch of this car. The bottom of the car was painted as nice as the top. This car was undercoated from the factory so the under coating was then reapplied over the beautiful Vit C paint and correct primer over spray like the factory did. The cost of a Gibson restoration today using the NOS parts that were used on this car would cost close to $200k.

Options: This is a loaded car with the most desirable options available, including the Rare Shaker Hood, Power Windows, Rally dash, 8 Track Radio, Rim Blow wheel, 6 way seat, Hockey Stick Stripe, PS, PB and the list goes on.

This 1970 Dodge Charger EMI Coupe was originally a 440 CID 1-4BBL “RB” (High Performance) car; however, a key component of this restoration was to install a complete and brand new drive train from front to back that was second to none available in the market. A period correct, brand new 426cid HEMI was purchased at a cost of $15,000 and this was coupled to a brand new 5 Speed transmission and DANA rear end; all in, the drive train alone cost in excess of $22,000. The Vinyl top and car color are correct to color-code for this vehicle year and match the codes on the fender plate.

This vehicle is rare and to find one in this condition is fortunate to say the least; placing the “King” of Mopars under the hood, coupled to a modern transmission and running gear places this car is a class of its own; she is spectacular and will turn heads wherever she goes.

Our classic muscle cars for sale section lists our daily finds of the best muscle cars for sale on line. Just select the make and find your ultimate ride!

Which muscle car is right for you?

There are many reasons why you may want to invest in a muscle car. It could be a vehicle you wanted since childhood, or simply an investment, but with so many cars on the second-hand market, its best to define a few criteria before you start your hunt.

A regular driver or once in a while.
With any classic car, the more miles you put on the clock the more it will potentially depreciate. However, unless it’s an expensive investment, these cars are made to be driven so decide which one you want first. A trailer queen is usually just a showpiece, while grocery getters are arguably regular drivers. You may want to show your car in the future at a car show or cruise. If you have this in mind, you will need to spend more money on the vehicle, a restoration or both. Usually, this means spending more than your average runaround.

Do you have the restoration skills?
Because we are dealing with older technology, even the best kept classic will need constant maintenance. If you’re going down the restoration route you will need time, money and skill. Like most things in life, you can’t do it yourself, you have to pay somebody else to do the work for you. Be honest with yourself from the beginning about this point as it could cost you in the long run. when you are deciding your budget to spend, try to factory in the cost of repair and car parts. You can find links to many classic car part vendors on our car parts page.

Budget
like it or not, your budget and finances will ultimately dictate what type of vehicle you eventually purchase and how much work you can perform on it long-term. Be realistic with a round figure and short list some potential vehicles you like. There’s no point wanting a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440 with a rare color if you only have the financial resources to buy a mid-70s body shell. Setting a budget is very important as buying one of these vehicles is largely based on emotion with some people buying their dream car without any thought of how much the ongoing costs will be. If possible, take a step back and do some rough calculations. There’s no point in buying what is your dream vehicle to get disillusioned in 12 months because costs spiraled out of control. It’s much better to save for much longer, than jump in with both feet.

Know your Chevy’s from your Mopars
You don’t need to know every intricate detail about every make and model, but it’s an idea after shortlisting a few makes and models to note what makes them individual for their particular year. Some makes and models differ hugely from one year to the next, while others only have subtle changes. For example, a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda has single headlights, while the 1971 model has dual headlights. You can find a lot of these answers on our website.

Vehicle that are easy to restore, still reasonably priced, with lots of parts available include Dodge Darts, basic Camaros, Mustangs and Chevy Novas. This may change over time, but they do make a good starting point.

Under $10,000
We are at the stage where you can’t really buy that much for under $10,000, but there are still some examples out there. An early 2000 Camaro SS with higher mileage can still be bought for under $10,000. You could also include a 1980s Camaro Iroc z. You could possibly also pick up a 1968 Ford Mustang in basic condition, but for under $10,000 you are really stretching things a bit these days.

Under $20,000
As previously mentioned, you can buy a Chevy Nova SS in reasonable condition for just under $20,000. These are solid and simple to work on cars.
Oldsmobile and Mercury’s give you a lot for your money at this price point, like a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass or even a late 60s Mercury Cougar. At this price point your in the realms of buying vehicles that can be restored, but just like completed vehicles the rarer the make and model, the more you will have to pay. You can also get some reasonable vehicles past 1972, but they don’t have the kudos or value of their late 60s and early 70s versions.

Under $30,000
Like other vehicles the more you spend, the more options you have and the better the completed vehicle. You can get a nice 71 Mustang or Camaro in excellent condition or the start of some of the more premium years, such as 1969 models. If you want something like a 1970 Hemi Cuda, we have seen them for as low as $55,000 , but you’ll be looking at more like $100,000. A 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner with average mileage can be got for just under $30,000, but it will require some work. 69 Road Runner muscle cars for sale in show condition will be more like a high $50,000.

Insurance
Car insurance is also a factor when it comes to owning a classic. We can’t give any specific recommendations, but the likes of Hagerty, Heacock Classic and Grundy are three common insurers. Always make sure that muscle car insurance is one of their offerings and they are knowledgeable about these vehicles.  Questions to ask them are do they  offer agreed value or stated value coverage, do they require professional appraisal, do you have to provide images of the vehicle, are there liability limits, are there mileage limitations, do modifications to the vehicle affect insurance coverage, are there storage restrictions, are there driver restrictions, do they offer roadside assistance, are there any good driver discounts, how are claims submitted and can they provide references specifically for classic insurance. Insurers that are knowledgeable about these areas are the better ones to go for.

Classic Design, New Parts
You could also consider a resto mod which is essentially a classic body with modern parts. They will give you more peace of mind in theory when it comes to the mechanics of the car – new engine, better brakes and suspension. To buy a good example will probably cost you near $50,000, but we have seen examples like a 1966 Mustang with a 302ci 5.0 liter EFI for just under $30,000. You also have the option yourself of buying a donor vehicle and dropping in a crate engine with upgraded parts, but this route can become costly in the long run, especially if you have outsource all the work. Custom tuners and mod shops makes some fantastic restomods with lots of custom features, but the end cost is usually for the person who has the budget to specify exactly what they want from a car.

Each year that goes by the classics go up more in value. A 1969 Dodge Charger R/T with original powertrain in top-notch condition can cost at the beginning of 2017 anything from low $60,000 and upwards. if you want something like a 1971, Plymouth Barracuda, these can range from anything from hi $40,000 to name your price, depending on the rarity of the options. Some of the most rare optioned muscle cars are now stretching to the million-dollar mark and above. This is one of the reasons why all these vehicles from the late 60s to the very early 70s are now jumping up in price each year. A 1971 Hemi Cuda Convertible 4-Speed sold for $3.5 Million at Mecum in 2014 and a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 427 LS6 for $1.15 Million in 2013 also at Mecum auctions. These are the rarest of the bunch with the rarest options, but it does give you an idea of where the market is heading.

A good resource for finding muscle cars for sale and the current value of vehicles is Hagerty which can give you a rough idea of the value of different makes and models. Then it’s a case of just keeping your eye on the listings for a short while to get a handle on current prices. Just like with other vehicles, dealers will cost you more, but you have more peace of mind if anything goes wrong. Private sellers allegedly have cheaper prices, but you have to be far more knowledgeable with what you are looking at, especially with these classic vehicles.
If you are buying a Ford then a vehicle that comes with a Marti Report will give it much more worth to its credibility and originality. For Mopars a Galen Govier recommendation is also a good sign. Broadcast sheets, back history and any other type of paperwork will also add credibility to a vehicle. Ask for the Fender tags, VIN numbers and build records. The more information a seller provides the better.
