‘Hiding in plain sight’ seems to be the theme when it comes to huge barn finds of muscle cars. In this case it’s 90,000 sq.ft. of muscle cars, trucks, and an assortment of prewar cars. The additional good news is all these vehicles are up for sale (the contact email ad. at the foot of this page).

The background to the collection starts with a James Harky, who bought the land and farm back in the 1970s, when he also started his vast inventory. The collection has been built up over the last 20 years, but after his wife’s passing last year, the collection needed to be thinned down.

Some of the standout muscle cars included in the video below include a Chevy Caprice 504ci, 1971 Camaro, 1970 Pontiac GTO, 1964 GTO LS Swap, Z28 Camaro, plus many more. Even if you have no intention of buying any vehicle in the video, its still a 22 minutes nostalgia trip checking out many types of American vehicles which go back nearly a hundred years.

As the years tick by the interest and value for muscle cars, especially the vintage variety steadily increases. Not at all surprising when you think these vehicles represent a more carefree time, engine displacement was king and bigger was always better.

We looked back in 2018 at the most searched muscle cars online and surprise surprise, the ’69 Dodge Charger came out on top, with the Mustang a close second – (at least across North America according to ClassicCars.com). Google Trends came to a different conclusion with the Mustang at number one, the Camaro at number five and the B-body Dodge Charger at number 13.

What about now?
So has anything changed this year? Not really. According to Classic muscle cars, the ’69 Charger is still up there are at no.1, the 1967 Chevrolet Impala is new in at no.2 and the ’67 Mustang at no.3. The popularity of the Impala, they say could be down to the exposure it was given on the TV series ‘Supernatural.’

Other prime suspects such as the ‘1969 Mustang, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, the 1964 Chevrolet Impala, 1969 Ford Mustang Mach I, 1968 Charger, 1962 Chevrolet Corvette and 1968 Mustang’ are in the top 10 searches for May 2019 with the ’69 Mach I and the 1962 Corvette making its first appearance in the top 10.

That’s the data from arguably one of the most popular muscle car selling websites in North America. But, what about ‘muscle cars’ as a search term from Google Trends. Punching in the term ‘muscle car’ and ‘muscle cars’ give different results. ‘Muscle cars’ for North America has ‘2019 Mustang – sports car’ at no. 4, Dodge super Bee at no. 5, Boss 429 at no.7. Worldwide ‘2019 Mustang – sports car’ is at no.1 with ‘Plymouth GTX’ at no.4. Also, Australia are no.1 with the United States at no.3 for the most searches. These are rising search terms of related topics.
With Australia being a big muscle car loving continent, it’s no surprise that the ‘Ford Falcon (XB)’ is at no.2 and simply ‘horsepower – unit of power’ is at no.4, with ‘Australia muscle cars for sale’ been no.1 for related queries. Australia are also at no.1 for ‘interest by region’ and the United States at no.3.

If we just look at the search term ‘muscle cars’ over the last 12 months for the United States, ‘barn finds’ is at no.1 as a related topic, with ‘V8 muscle cars 3’ at no.3 and ‘2019 muscle cars’ at no.4 for related queries.

Bear in mind these are just for search terms and not the value of vehicles. If you want to check out Hagerty’s ‘Index of 1960s American muscle cars‘ it shows that from January 2014 to January 2016 muscle car values increased dramatically with them staying straight up to January 2019. Rarity, exposure and just plain street cred. play a large part in value with some of the main players always being in there like the 1970 Chevelle LS6 SS 454 and the 1969 Boss 429 Mustang.

What does all this mean?
No matter the country or state, Mustangs are popular, as are vintage Chargers, with other culprits such as Impalas and Corvettes being popular. People also like a nice barn find. Not surprising with so many TV shows these days featuring pickers and bargain hunters finding those hidden gems hidden away for years.

Mustangs are showing no sign of going away any time soon, so it’s no surprise they are at the top for interest levels and worth, steadily increasing for both vintage and modern versions. The Dodge Charger is just an iconic shape as a muscle car and backed up with plenty of appearances in both TV and movies. This means that if you’re interested in buying a vintage muscle/pony car, you can’t go wrong with a Mustang or Charger for popularity or holding its value. Generalizing, the same can be said that the big three muscle car makers of Chevy, Dodge and Ford.

Look hard enough and you can find examples of classic cars everywhere. The case proven with father and son team Terry and Preston who have uncovered many a fine muscle car over the years all around their home town of North Pole, Alaska.

The duo have built up quite a collection over the years according to the video above by Hagerty. (it’s also to be noted that the Pontiac in the video was referred to as a Ram Air IV, but in reality is a Ram Air III) Their collection range from shiny restorations to barn finds which clearly need some TLC.

A 1969 Ford Torino Cobra is the first vehicle for inspection found by Preston locally buried under a few feet of snow in someone’s backyard. The car is in great condition, still wearing its original green paint. The Torino is apparently one of one as it was ordered with the clock option and an automatic, but the main details from the Marti Report shows the Torino to originally be a promo car which sat for a year at a dealership in California.

gto

Next up two Mustangs in the form of a 1967 C-code fastback in candy-apple red and a 1965 Mustang convertible, also a C-code. It’s clear they like their Pontiacs with a 1971 GTO, a 1967 LeMans “Post” coupe, a 1967 Pontiac Bonneville with a 428 V8 and the pride of the bunch a 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 400 Ram Air III which they purchased from Pontiac executive Jim Wangers.

Terry and Preston’s collection of vintage muscle cars is clearly impressive, especially so considering the conditions some of the vehicles were found. Maybe it’s time for us to get on our own barn finding hats and seeing what’s out there.

There are plenty of barn finds scattered around the Internet for sale in various conditions, but it’s usually the best of the best that find their way to the official auction houses. This was the case with this 1970 Chevelle SS396, which was on the front cover of the November 2016 issue of Car Craft magazine and went under the hammer at Russo and Steele earlier this year.

The Chevelle came equipped with the special high performance RPO (Regular Production Option) L78 engine and although it now has a warn patina, it is still in great shape to be restored back to its former glory. Only 2,144 examples of the 1970 Chevelle SS396 were ever made with the RPO L78 engine option.

The car is said to have been parked in a Fresno, California storage lot since 1983 and only picked up in January 2016. The car came with its original build sheet, documentation and the 2016 issue of Car Craft Magazine. The car crossed the auction block this past January, for an undisclosed sum.

One takeaway from this story is that these prized muscle cars are still out there, so it’s all a case of keeping your eyes and ears to the ground to discover one of these vintage beasts.

Here we have a base model 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle, which is said to be driveable and in reasonably good condition. It’s always amazing when you hear about barn find vehicles being stored for decades. Why didn’t the owners do something with it? Why hasn’t someone spotted it before? Either way, at least these vehicles are now being brought back into the public eye and put to their intended use.

This Chevelle is in remarkably good condition considering the amount of time it has been stored. The paintwork looks reasonable with only a few minor spots here and there. The interior is also in good shape, no rats nests and it’s probably benefited from zero sunlight over the years.

The powertrain is numbers matching and although it’s only a 307ci V8, it had a few replacement parts and runs well, just no mention of the amount of mileage.

Original Chevelles are always worth investing into, no matter the options. This one is no different and would probably be a safe bet Capt original condition.

I like many of you have seen big changes in the classic car industry over the years. Jalopies, Hot Rods, Customs, Rat Rods, and more. One must keep a Rolodex to keep track of all these changes. In the current era “Rat Rods” are the latest wave that has engulfed us. You see, many cars and trucks today are “Patina’d. That is never mind painting your vehicle, just leave it the way you found it. To each his or her own I guess, but there are still artisans out there. They desire a beautiful paint job for their ride. And, if you want a great paint job it will cost you dearly to have a professional do it. But wait, what if YOU did it? Can you? Should you? Will you? How?

Well, Cartechbooks.com has a new book out for you to learn something of value. A wonderful book has been written by two fellas from across the pond. Tony Thacker along with Mick Jenkins have written a book just for you.

The book is a hundred and forty three pages of “The How to” and it could not be laid out any better. The book contains eleven chapters. From the start the authors encourage you to make a plan first. That in itself is tough for many. But, the authors provide a detailed road map for you. Let me share the track to run in as explained in the book.

As mentioned you must make a plan. Without a plan you will certainly fail. That is true of most things in life. Then, tools and equipment. What do I need? Is it expensive? Next and this is a big one- Buy the right car.it’s in the We all know that is so critical to the entire project. Buy the wrong car and you are doomed from the start. Next, tear down and how to remove the old paint. We all have heard that preparation is the key to any project. And this project is no exception. Next, the authors take us to Panel Debate. No, not a political debate but a panel debate. You know, are the current panels on your vehicle any good? Are they filled with bondo? Are they straight? You get the idea. So what’s next?

So, you have done your homework. You have prepped, bought the right tools, torn your dream vehicle down to pieces, so what’s next? Paint! Yes, types of paint, paint that you can expect to make your dream a reality. With this in mind the authors want you to understand sanding, grinding, prepping, and eventually priming and painting. This can be daunting. However, follow a proven formula and success is within reach. The book explains in great detail how to do it all. From start to finish and what to expect along the way. You will see many photos that show you the right way. The way professionals do it.

You see friends, even though the Patina craze is here today many still love a great paint job. Just like me. I own vehicles that are barn finds and I left them alone. But, I have other vehicles that are painted and look better than new. It’s safe to say there is plenty of room for everyone. I recently overheard a comment that some prefer the patina look because they fear the paint. In short order that means they are afraid to pay someone big money. Or, they are simply afraid to paint it themselves.

Let’s be honest here. Painting your own vehicle can be a daunting task. But, it’s only daunting because nobody ever explained to you how to do it. And, to do it right. The answer is right here. Cartechbooks.com has once again found experts to help you. This book is as easy as it gets. Plenty of explanations, clear, crisp pictures, and an easy formula to follow. The authors take you through all the scenarios so that you feel at ease. We all know many hobbyist’s don’t try this at home because they just don’t know where to begin. Well, this book is broken down into easy to read chapters. I assure you that if you read this book, and follow along, the end result will make you proud.

Think you can’t do it? Think again. You will shave off possibly thousands of dollars from your budget by doing it yourself. I encourage all of you to go online and pick up this fantastic book. Go to Cartechbooks.com and order one today. You will be amazed at what you are capable of.

Finding one Plymouth Superbird as a barn find in good condition is a rarity, finding two is just showing off. But this seems the case with these two eBay listings. One of the Birds here is B5 blue with white bucket seats and the other in Alpine White with black bucket seats.

The Current seller was apparently at an auction bidding on a blue Superbird which he won, when he was approached by a man offering for sale two Superbirds which have been in his possession and storage for the last 40 years. He bought them from the original owners who he knew personally. He had licensed them until 1985 and 1987 and then put them in storage since. Now both are for sale with a current bid of around $150k.

superbirds

Both have a 440ci. Super Commando 4 barrel engines, one is a manual one is an automatic. Both have clearly been kept in good condition over the years, with the bodywork on both of them looking in fine shape with only the interior in the blue one looking like it has some surface mold which stand outs on the white interior. Probably the white Bird is in the best condition of the two.

The White one has 42,497 miles and the blue one 27,419 miles on the clock. Both are being sold separately and presumably the engines are in running order. Clearly these are rare finds and it’s great to see two more Superbirds coming back into existence.

Images like the one attached pop-up on social media from time to time saying things along the lines of, ‘I wish I’d never sold my (insert car make and model.)’ You have to reminisce about a certain car which you had for a while, usually picked up for a reasonable amount and is now worth a small fortune. It’s a bit depressing really to tweak your negative memory banks for those muscle cars owned in the past which could now be worth loads. It’s all done lightheartedly and with humor, but it’s also a bit like an investment turned away years ago, which has now shot up in value.

Once you get to a certain age and you’ve gone through a quite a few cars over the years, more or less everybody has owned something in the past which has now gone up in value. This could have been decades ago or just last year, but the reasons for anybody selling a car are as numerous as the makes and models themselves. You simply wanted to buy a new car, it was too expensive to repair, it become too unreliable, the list goes on. It’s great to have hindsight thinking you should have kept that rarity from 1970, but for most people that means hanging onto a vehicle for a few decades and hoping the value increases.

For those who do hang onto their cars in the hope they go up in value, they can be shoved in the back yard, sat for a few decades until they become part of the surroundings, half rot away and become the barn and field finds of the future. It’s the minority that stick these vehicles in temperature controlled garages for years.

Some cars are clearly going to be future rarities from the amount of options they have, one-off models, etc., but it’s never clear cut. This is clear from rarities still being dug up as field barn finds. Seeing the worth today is a lot harder than in 20+ years time.

So if you have owned a rare muscle car in the past, sold one and it’s now worth a fortune, don’t feel so bad. Getting all poetic, the best way to sum this up is from the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, ‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.’ In other words, it’s better to have owned one of these rarities and enjoyed it for the time you had it than not at all. This is especially true for those who owned a rare muscle car back in the day and bought it for a reasonable amount. You would have also enjoyed driving it on much clearer roads, with less expensive gas prices are probably at a time when everybody had drum brakes and didn’t mind leaf spring suspension.

So, it’s always better to have owned a fine vehicle even for a short period than not at all. If you want to own one again, you’ll have to pay far more money, but that’s the name of the game with car appreciation. The other takeaway is look at what you have now or buy a car which could be a future rarity. You just may have to hang onto it for a few decades, store it in a temperature controlled garage and only drive it for 3 miles a year……..

We are living in a time when it’s never been easier to track down muscle cars and parts for sale. Unless it’s the rarest of the rare, there’s usually a few examples of vehicles for sale at any one time, plenty of OEM parts and look for long enough and usually what you want pops up. Forums and message boards are a good way to ask advice, but social media groups are much quicker to respond and a great way to talk directly to sellers and dig out some hard to find bargains.

You just need to do a quick search on the likes of Facebook for enthusiastic groups which have the same car interests as you. For example, ‘Mopar muscle and swap meets‘ have a listing by Dave Stutler for 1973 Charger parts, doors, front fenders, floor shift column, bucket seats and door panels. Another listing from this group from Derrick Fettig advertises Mopar parts from 1966-1974. Loads of stuff from engine blocks to fenders. The benefit here is that you can talk directly to the seller and get feedback from other group members almost instantly.

Car parts are more amply advertised this way, but that doesn’t dismiss vehicles themselves. Type in something like ‘cars for sale’ in the top search box in Facebook, click on the ‘Groups’ tab at the top and you should get pages of groups with either general vehicles or something specific you had in mind. I typed in ‘chevelle for sale’ as a search term and came up with plenty of groups with direct listings for vehicles for sale. Run down barn finds to show cars, even a few auction listings.

musclecar

The takeaway here is that joining a few social media groups will eventually source you the vehicle or car part your after and give you the chance to chat with like-minded people. If you haven’t already, join a few today and you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Maybe even start up your own group.

We all get to a certain age when we start to reminisce about how things were so much cheaper in the past. This is exactly the case for muscle cars, proving the point from these images grabbed from Bobby Haddock’s Facebook page, who found some old newspapers in his attic advertising used muscle cars.

One of the images dates from Monday, September 28, 1970, so presumably the others are from around that time period. Wouldn’t it be great if we could pick those cars up for the same price today is the usual response. However, the main takeaway here is looking at the present car market and look for those vehicles which are reasonably priced and could be future rarities. Limited numbers, rare options, barn finds…the list goes on.

This will involve you putting on your treasure hunting hat and constantly checking the listings for vehicles that come up for sale. But like any good treasure hunter, keep looking and eventually you may hit a few nuggets. Finding information on vehicles has never been more accessible online. Landing that rare specimen now may pay dividends in the future.

Found in ‘rural’ Iowa, this is a huge collection of vintage muscle cars found by Patrick Glenn Nichols, all with the potential of being brought back to life. The first video focuses mainly on a few of the vehicles, but it’s clear there is so much potential in this treasure trove.

Plenty of nicely shelved parts, e.g transmissions, carburettors and other engine parts fill the surrounding barns showing a conscientious, avid collector. Among the cars are 2 documented Unrestored L72 Novas, A 1970 Chevelle SS, an original big block 1971 heavy Chevy, which are the main focus of the first video. There’s loads of land here and all of it seems to be packed with either tons of car bodies or parts.

Part 2 to this video I could only find on Facebook as below showing an even wider view of the collection, but the main question here is its exact location and how much of this gold mine is for sale. Wading through the comments it seems the whole goldmine is not currently for sale, but there may be an auction in the future. It also seems that all this is owned by a personal collector and not a business, making the collection even more impressive.

If you’re interested in anything from this collection, then it’s probably a good idea to subscribe to Patrick’s Facebook page, as he ‘may’ in the future publish when this lot will come up for auction.

This is a great bunch of GM vehicles just waiting for someone to come along and rehabilitate them back to life. The listing seems to be for a bunch of Camaros, Chevelles, Pontiac Firebirds, Pontiac Lemans and maybe a few others wanting between $500-$2,000 located in Bristol, Vermont.

From the brief listing it seems that the vehicles are from between 1967 – 1971, which is the prime muscle car time period and from the looks of the images, there could be a few other bits and bobs dotted around in the shape of other cars and parts. The cars seem to range from things that are barely a shell to what looks like a late 60s Chevelle which still has all its own panels and glass.

All cars are said to be ‘non-running’ and ‘good for parts,’ which means no engines or transmissions. If any interiors come with the cars or any other parts you’d only find out on closer inspection.

musclecars

There are enough vehicles here to whet the appetite of somebody wanting to start a restoration, needing a donor body shell or willing to just get down there and see if they can find a diamond in the rough. With such a brief description, it’s hard to tell if any of these vehicles have any rare options or if any paperwork comes with them at all. All of them have the potential to be sweet muscle cars in prime condition, but they all have a long road to get back to top health. Like any collections such as this one and so few details, you don’t really know what’s available until you get there in person.

Check out the listing yourself and see if anything take your fancy.

People come across barn finds from time to time, even rarer ones, but it’s not every day you find a rare prototype, especially of an iconic vehicle. This is the case for a prototype 1971 Mustang Boss 302 which was sold to the public after Ford cancelled their Trans Am racing program back in 1970.

The car in question has the VIN number FO2H100053, Body 63D, Color D, trim 5A with a 351-4V V8 engine. Bought from eBay as a lucky find, this is the story of how this one-off vehicle came to light and its story up to now.

It’s a shame the days have gone where you could find a derelict muscle car and buy the thing for next to nothing. It’s so easy now to find the general value/worth of any vehicle online, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a project vehicle which will potentially go up in value.

This 1970 Charger R/T is numbers matching and has been in storage since 1979. According to the ad, the car will be featured in an upcoming show on the Discovery Channel, the ad. just doesn’t say which one. With these attributes you’re not going to get a complete bargain here, as shown by the hefty asking price of $30,000, but it does have tons of potential for a complete restoration.

Numbers matching 440, rough, but with a reasonable shape exterior and interior, J81 “Go Wing” spoiler, original Y3 Dodge Light Gold paint and 92K original miles. It comes with the original build sheet and fender tag all adding up to a car begging to be brought back to its original condition.

This 70s Charger ticks all the boxes, it’s just if you think it’s worth the asking price of $30,000.

A 1969 Dodge Charger will always be one of the classics of the muscle car world, so finding one which has the potential for a complete restoration is always an exciting prospect. This example like all barn finds, has been waiting patiently for someone to come along and stop the rot and bring it back to its former glory.

The abandoned 1969 Charger has a 440ci. engine and this video shows how the rusting engine gets tweaked and burst into life, the first time in years. It’s an exciting prospect.

The second video gives you a brief update of what happened to the Charger after its initial start-up. That was back in March 2017 and since then there has been no other updates on if the car has been restored or if it is still in the same shape. Let’s just hope the guys post further updates to give us a chance to see if this Charger is on its way back to its original condition.

Street Machinery in Euclid, Ohio are known for their custom hot rods, parts upgrades, engine swaps and cool patina’d cars. each year, they have started to hold their Inventory Intervention with more than 100 vehicles for sale on their huge property.

The inventory ranges from barn finds to fully restored vehicles and being swapping experts themselves, there’s plenty of parts to choose from.

The Intervention may have come and gone, we can still check out their website for all their amazing creations, possibly, maybe something on my website that fits the needs of your own project. Check them out from the link below.

Engine: 383 2 bbl

One of 117 built.

This first generation Dodge Charger still looks as mean and moody today as it did back in the late 1960s. An answer to the Plymouth Barracuda, this example is 1 of 117 which should mean it’s worth shortlisting in anybody’s Mopar book.

There were a few white hat specials available in the Mopar lineup with the Charger having rounded, sporty instrument gauges ‘vinyl roof, power steering, console, armrest, white wall tires and wheel covers.’ This one is clearly a barn find, but it doesn’t seem as raggedy as it could be.

The ad. says it has a none original 1971 383 Hi-po motor, ‘factory correct A833 4 speed and 3.91 sure grip 8.75 rear differential’ meaning that the majority of the original parts are here. The motor is also said to be running good and the transmission shifting fine, but as with all barn finds this is a bonus more than anything.

There are obvious signs of external rusting, but on first appearances everything seems to be quite solid and even the interior and engine bay are in quite good condition.

Overall, for the asking price of $8,750 and the possible part exchange with the current owner could mean a nice winter project for one of you out there.

There are usually two camps when it comes to classic muscle cars, one that prefer to keep any car from the era in original condition and those that want the original design and looks, but with modern parts. In reality, the processes isn’t that straight forward as there are many variables, especially with a car that needs restoration. Here we will look at some of the pros and cons of restomod’ing your vehicle.

Barn Finds
When it comes to a muscle car that needs a complete restoration the options are numerous. If you take the car back to completely original condition or enhance it with modern parts is usually down to its rarity and end worth. If it’s a base model it’s more than likely that you can turn into anything you want. Making a rare optioned Cuda for example into a restomod would seem like sacrilege to some, so it’s really dependent on the individual vehicle and how much it is worth restored.

No matter the muscle car’s rarity, a restomod done well always seems to make the vehicle much more visually appealing and can inject creativity and originality not found on the original vehicle. You only have to do Search the website to find examples of incredible custom muscle cars which have a massive variety of powertrains, exterior designs and paintwork to get an idea. Some of the discrepancies in vintage vehicles can be remedied with modern parts and the amount of creativity can be endless.

Originality
However, no matter how well done a restmod is built, there is always the argument for keeping a vintage vehicle in original condition. It’s that simple preservation thing of wanting to keep everything as it rolled from the factory. This keeps the car’s original value and has a sense of worth that you can only get with the complete original. The only real downside is that you’re still using vintage mechanics and parts and these are becoming more scarce as time goes by. But there is nothing like a complete original. it has a certain aura that you can with a custom car.

There really isn’t one correct direction for taking a muscle car if it is being restored or enhanced. Be it a barn find or a donor vehicle, it’s really up to the individual owner and their vision for the vehicle.
It would be interesting to hear what you guys think on this subject and if a muscle car should be kept all original or made the best it possibly can be with modern parts. comment below.

I tell anyone who will listen to me to keep your head on a swivel today. Not just because of the dangerous wild Wild West era we live in but because of the car hobby. Spring is finally here and people are opening there garage doors again and starting to come out of hibernation. So, keeping your head swiveling and your big ears open is one of the ways to find your next car. They are out there in numbers yet. For example. I belong to a big Mustang club where I live.

I know peeps that know peeps. However we all got our lunch handed to us two weeks ago. Of all places a guy put a small ad on Craigslist that he was selling a 69 Ford Mustang Mach I. Well, I certainly do not need another car at this point but a friend of mine was interested. He went there yesterday. Four buildings full of restored older Mustangs. Complete engines on stands.

Parts in bins filled the walls. The guy has spotters in the Midwest and west looking for barn finds and such. My friend sent me pictures this morning and I needed to sit down and catch my breath. How did we not know about this guy? We thought we knew every collection in a 100 mile radius. How did this guy slip under our pickers and spotters? We are all asking ourselves this very question this day. As smart as we all thought we were it shows how dumb we all are.

Just like the guy in the picture. Which guy? Let’s start with the camera man. He is facing the wrong way. It would have been his Pulitzer Prize had he turned around. Instead someone else got the amazing picture. Second, the driver. The driver had done a few barrel rolls and this picture was snapped in the midst of one of the rolls. But look at the driver. Both hands on the wheel and he appears to be in control. Well when the car finally came to rest he was yanked out of the car with some injuries but none life threatening.

That in itself is amazing that the guy did not get killed. Take that picture and compare it to a Nascar driver in his space suit and one would be confused. Thank goodness for a roll bar I guess. And by the way this type of racing is still the best type. Dirt track, balls out and hold onto your wooden seat. I love this old style racing. I used to love a NASCAR but they ruined it. You could sleep through all but the last five laps and not miss anything any more. Don’t believe me? Check the stands during nap time and you will see many many empty seats.

So, get your big head on that swivel, clean your big ears with a Q tip, wipe your dirty glasses off and start breathing again like a mad tiger. Right now is the best time of the year to find your car. They are out there and out there in good numbers. Pickers, spotters, and so on are hunting for the car you may want. Beat them to the punch and restore or rebuild a fast muscle car. Let’s face it. Fast muscle cars are history. They will never, ever be built like they once were. Today’s cars suck. If you are old enough to say you watched Leave it to Beaver on TEE VEE your grandchildren someday will be driving electric cars or be a passenger in a driverless car. They will never know what it was like to drive a hot rod from the good old days. The smell of gas, the feel of a throttle, a bad to the bone, thunderStruck car.( that’s my AC DC love)

So please buy as many as you can. Share the love and be a spotter for yourself. Don’t miss the boat unless you want some other guy to pick your pockets

This is the picture I long for everyday. I have said it so many times I have lost count. When I see a picture of an old car being hauled out of a barn and seeing the sunshine for the first time in years I get happy feet. It’s a Model A car and clearly someone took off the fenders at one point and was trying to achieve something. My guess is someone started a hot rod project at one time and lost the desire. I would be a buyer of this in a heartbeat if the price was right. Certainly it will need the brakes and steering repaired and hopefully the engine turns. If the motor is not locked up then I am in deep. Sure the seat inside is bad but it’s only a seat. Tires are more than likely dry rotted and I know it sounds like the list is growing. It is growing and it reminds me of my current 28 Model A project.

Again, I am becoming an expert on a car I never imagined I would. But now with education comes power and confidence. Now, I I know first hand what to look for and what to expect. This car is perfect for a hot rod. Yes, flip it upside down and drop in a big Ford engine and rebuild this lightweight into a cool heavy weight.

My reminder to all of you is to get out and circulate. When you hear the masses claim all the barn finds are dried up ignore them and run out and find them. Plenty of cars and trucks are out there waiting for the right person to snatch them up and bring them back to life. Circulate, talk to people, let everyone know you buy old cars. Go to Vista Print and get business cards made up. For under twenty bucks you can have five hundred simple cards made. Your name, your email, your phone number and what you are looking for. I did it and pass them out all over the place hoping for a gold strike. Now, it’s your turn to stop reading about other people finding cars and you be the one that finds the cars.

This is the part where I tear my hair out. Everyone loves a barn finds. I love them and I love Model A cars. This one I would make safe and drive as is. It’s so perfect like this it is hard to imagine the car being hidden so long.

Once again it proves these barn finds are out there. If you were paying attention I finally told the readers of the 69 Road Runner I have known about for over a year. It was put away in 1976 and we kept it a double super secret until now.

Makes you wonder how many cars like this car are still lurking and going undetected. Now, don’t fool yourself folks. I bought two barn finds and they are a ton of work. All the rubber is junk, fuel is junk, seats are usually mice crap by now, and so on. Don’t think for a second you can pull it out of the barn, drop a battery in it and start it up.

It might do that but you will have no brakes and no steering. To rebuild those basic items you will spend buckets of money and much time in the garage. And when you are done people will still ask you when you intend to restore the car! It’s maddening. So, don’t get to wound up over a barn find. It’s a ton of work but is it worth it? Of course. But, be prepared for everything and I mean everything. It’s a labor of love and a living nightmare all at the same time. So, check your life at the door

If I were driving down the street and saw this I assure you I would buy it. First, it’s a Caddy. Second it’s only $300 bucks. Third, I love this persons approach to selling.

No eBay, Clunkslist, or high tech pay me to sell your car web site. Just a card board sign. The car is tired, and like us it has seen much better days. Barn finds that scream RARE! One of a kind, only 16 made and so on are usually a crafty person who has his facts wrong.

Millions of cars are made and sold every year around the world. Lots go to the grave yard and are trashed. Many more linger in garages and storage garages. So, this proves you do not see special web sites or pay sites. Get the hell out of the house and start looking everywhere. I can tell you every vacation we go on I am the guy who drives around old buildings, gets off the beaten paths, and stops and asks questions.

Don’t be afraid. You don’t need Mommy to help you. Get going folks and make a difference. Three hundred bucks!

Yes even at Barrett Jackson the barn finds are in full force. Take a peek at this 1967 GT350. The owners left it as they found it. No wash and wax, no detail, just pure barn find. Now, lets review barn finds in general, most are really a garage find. I saw at least five of these types while at Barretts. One was a Dodge Charger that was sitting in a garage near Cleveland, Ohio. It had 91k on the odometer oh, did I mention it had a Hemi engine.

So, barn finds, garage finds or whatever you like to call them are out there in full force yet. Trust me. I know of two right within twenty five miles of my house and I and working to land one of them. If you want to hit the way back machine I have news for you. I just bought a real barn find with the hay still on it. It was parked in 1977 and discovered in 2014. It took me over a year to get my hands on this car.

barretjackson

I will tell you what type and kind another day. My point is what you suspected. The cars are out there. It’s up to you to search, dig, ask, probe and more if you really want to find them. This will be my third barn/garage find since 2013. You can do it too. Now, if you live in the heart of New York City your task is tougher, but not impossible. You just need to spread your wings and start networking like crazy. The stories you will hear as to why someone parked a car long ago are amazing. So, open your eyes and ears and get going and you too may find a treasure.

True to form I headed to Scottsdale Arizona for the big show under the tent. The weather was lousy most of the week. Rain, wind and cold dominated the time I spent there. So much for global warming and the desert heat.

The crowds were thick. Thicker in the main room as it was too darn cold to be outside very long. I felt bad for the food vendors out there huddled around the ovens to stay warm. But it was my first time out there so I walked it all. Just on Friday alone I walked over 6 miles in and around the cars and buildings. Everything I came to see and more was there for me to see. What I did not imagine was a building full of vendors. Massage chairs, Alaskan fishing trips, jewelry, hair and skin care, shoes, shirts and much more. After all, I came to see cars and to see cars sold.
Finally I took my seat on Friday and watched the masters at work. Once that car hit the stage it had about 90 seconds to sell unless maybe the Jacksons promised the sellers they would fetch more. I say that because at times the car would linger on stage for what seemed like five minutes as the auctioneer would beg you to bid higher. At times King Craig Jackson or Steve Jones would pipe in that the car was worth three times what was being bid. One car the claim had over 700 thousand dollars of receipts and it only sold for 70 grand. Or did he say 700 thousand? Either way at times they begged and pleaded with the audience to bid more. It’s like they thought everyone in the room was a millionaire and money was no object.

The stunner came on Saturday when a VW bug restored by Dave Kindig and crew sold for over 140 grand. For a VW bus! Can yuh say “sucker”.

The crowds were large and the cars plentiful. From barn finds to full blown restorations there was something for everyone if you had money. At times I wondered who all the people on the stage were. The stage was crowded at times and even though security kept the one side of the cars clear of people the shear amount was distracting. I did hear one resounding bite over and over in the crowds. They don’t like the guy in the sunglasses. Yep, Steve wears them for medical reasons but he comes off as a jerk. I heard it all over the building and I wonder if B- J knows or cares.
On Saturday they auctioned off Justin Bieber’s car. Other than a few hundred young girls there with there parents the majority of the crowd couldn’t care less. They clapped a bit to be polite but other than that the crickets were noisier.

Now, to the cars. So many Corvettes, Mustangs, and yes Camaro’s the crowds paid good money for. Chevelles did well as usual as did some off the main stream cars. An ambulance that carried the body of JFK, Dodge Power Wagons, and of course a few really cool cars that were off the grid.
Overall I got to check a big bucket list item. The vendors made sure they ripped you off for a coke or a beer but nobody seemed to mind. Every walk of life seemed to be there especially on Saturday.

Roll out the baby strollers honey we’re going to spend the day looking at cars we cannot afford! Uber were everywhere. One driver told me the customers were like ants. Everyone was getting wealthy during this event. New car displays, old car displays, and all things automotive were on hand. The only long lines I encountered were going to the men’s room. Yes, the lines were longer going into the boys side. Yes, I guess there were more men than women there but there were a lot and I mean a lot of females there. And as usual it was a show in its self. Some of them I wonder if they really looked in the mirror before they left home. Anyway, my next few articles will be about some of the cars there and some background, so stay tuned.

Well, this picture says a thousand words. One does wonder what happened here. Did someone lose interest? It appears the car is among many other treasures but we’ll never know for sure. The web sites such as Craigslist and EBay are full of lost interest cars and trucks. A person starts off with a dream and a plan but somewhere along the way the plan goes off the tracks. It’s hard to stay on course when doing a hot rod. It’s expensive, hard work, and the results are slow to materialize.

This hot rod in the picture appears a bit different. It has the look that at one time it was a car driven. Why it was parked and when is a mystery to us. But, as you understand it sure would be fun to know it’s whereabouts. Why? Of course, go dig it out! It has all the makings of a 32 Ford and if that body is steel you have hit the pay dirt. No pun intended. Finding a real steel body is getting tougher and much more expensive. Of course replicas are made today and they are well done. But to have a real steel bodied hot rod is honestly the best way to go. I hear all the time that barn finds or field finds are getting almost impossible.

I agree they are getting tougher but just in the last three years I personally have bought three myself. And, I know if three more that can be bought in a circle radius of 50 miles just from my home, they are out there my friends and you can find them. It takes networking, time, and the stick to it plan. I encourage you to dig deeper, probe deeper, and to never give up. Myself, I just finally bought a building to store my collection in. I wouldn’t have needed it until these last three acquisitions. So, please for the hobby go and find these treasures. Share your experiences on line so that others can get motivated as well. Now, go!

Jeepers, when I saw this story about this car being found it got me excited. There were only a few pictures and most were blurry. It’s a car that has been sitting since the early 1980’s. The interior is in need of replacement as are a few engine parts. As for the body it appears pretty solid for sitting so long.

It’s amazing how different any barn find will be once you drag it into the daylight and power wash the years of dust off. That will always give you a better sense of what lies ahead. I have been involved in several finds and in the garage it’s usually dark and dank. The air seems bad and the lighting is always poor if there are any sources at all. We all know the car might fire with the help of a new battery and good fuel but that is very short term.

All in all the fuel needs to be flushed out and that is just the tip. All the fluids need to be flushed. All brake lines and fuel lines may need to be replaced. Once you manage to get the wheels off the brakes are easy to inspect but figure on new wheel cylinders. Rear end fluid must be changed as well. Then, start taking the interior out. Look for mice, raccoons, rats, snakes any other animal that could have made a second home. Nests can be found almost anywhere. Those little buggers can be very inventive.

More than likely you will want to pull the engine and rebuild it. Same with the transmission whether it’s a automatic or standard shift. That in it’s self is a major under taking but critical. If it’s a convertible the top will be ruined. More than likely the motor for the top and wiring will be bad. The exhaust is likely to be bad too. Mice also like to crawl into the pipes and work themselves into the muffler areas. They like dark and cramped places for some reason.

Wiring. It could be an issue if anything ate the wires. If no animal got the wires most will be dry rotted and in need of replacement. The tires will be dry rotted so four new ones will be needed. Oh, the paint might be faded too. Who knows why someone just parked the car. Was the engine bad? The trans? You will find out in due order and it might be ugly. Prepare yourself for bad news and have a budget ready to repair or replace big items. I have done all these.

I landed up rebuilding an engine, doing all new brake and fuel lines, gas tank, new glass, new interior and more. What I thought would be a straight forward affair turned bad news and more bad news. My restorer would call and say he has bad news or just send me an email and tell me what I needed to buy. At times it seemed it never would end. When it finally did I was thrilled, so much so I bought another one and started all over again. I could not help myself because the second one was a long time coming. I don’t want to scare you but I wanted to be honest. TV shows seem to show you that you pull the car out and jump start it and with a few minor things you are on the road to Pebble Beach. That situation is very, very rare. The process will emotionally drain you and your wallet. However, I still hunt for barn finds. Now when I find them I pass them on to friends. That is unless it is something very very special. Then, I go for number three and get my head examined.

Instead of the usual barn finds or restoration projects, we thought we would feature an investment piece in the shape of this 1971 Plymouth Barracuda.

BUY NOW ON EBAY.

This one comes with a numbers matching big block 383 V8 engine, not one but two broadcast sheets and comes in Winchester Gray paint and 7,219 on the clock.
The car is said to be a complete restoration job with every nut and bolt being restored and presumably brought back to factory condition.

You don’t seem to get any back history with the listing, but the images clearly show the documentation along with things like color palettes from the time and a complete code breakdown.

As you would expect, everything looks sumptuous and spotless on this Cuda and being at top dollar you’re allowed to be as picky as you like here.

You get a nice spare tire in the trunk with the addition of an audio system and even the addition of close-ups of the VIN tags with what looks like even brand-new screws.
There seems to be a small touch of surface rust around the VIN tag which will need to be investigated.

1971-Plymouth-Barracuda3

The underside shots show a spotless vehicle, as is the same for the engine compartment and interior which has all period correct features from the steering wheel to wooden dash.

So this is a 383 V8, numbers matching with broadcast sheets, full restoration but no mention of any rare options, apart from the code list, but it would be helpful to have these down as text in the listing.
At just shy of $90,000 – $89,900, this is the top end of the muscle car category, so some obvious haggling will be needed here and further investigation into the car’s back history before you dive in.

In any case, it’s great to see one of these old rarities in such fine condition.

On one hand you will read or hear that all the great fast muscle cars are found. Everyone of them has been located and known about. The other side of the story is there are still plenty of cars out there somewhere ready to be dragged out.
I vote for number two. I say that because I have a friend with two old Corvettes that have been in his barn for at least twenty years.

One is a 1966 of all things with over two hundred thousand miles on it. Gulp. A few years ago I walked into a shop and tucked in the corner was a 67 Corvette with a 427 engine. It had not been out of that shop since 1977.

So, this is not all about Corvettes but since there are millions of cars all over the world I find it impossible that every fast muscle car has been found. When I hear some expert on TV say that his organization knows where every such and such car is I want to shoot the boob tube. It’s impossible. Discoveries are made all the time.

It’s just that every discovery does not make national news. We all love the barn find but we all know barn finds can be expensive. Maybe not the actual purchase but to rebuild the car is very costly.

I begged my friend to sell me that 66 for years. Begged. Do you know why he won’t sell it to anyone? Of course you don’t. It was his Uncle’s and that old man made him promise to rebuild it and drive it in his honor. Now my friend is in his mid fifties so he better get on with it. Deep in my gut I have a bad feeling he never will. Why? Costs. Once he figures out what it will cost to restore this he may leave it parked. And that my friend is a darn shame.

When you see these images of muscle cars which are either barn finds or field finds in an autumnal wood, it almost looks spooky, where somebody parked up the vehicle decades ago, left for the next owner.

This example is a 1969 El Camino SS 396, with matching numbers powertrain and quite a solid body in parts ready for restoration.

BUY NOW ON EBAY.

The engine has its fair share of surface rust, is said to turn by hand, but they have not tried to start it.
Newish HT leads and one reasonable valve cover looks like some attempt has been made in the near past to get this running, so the engine may have potential.
Other than that, with a non-starting engine, it will need a complete strip down and parts replacing.

The exterior shows its signs of decay, with surface rust on most panels and the lower front fenders having their fair share of deep rust.
Other portions of the car also have rust set in with the front cross members needing completely replacing.
As with any barn or field find like this one, there are usually deep rust areas once you dig deep and this one is no exception.

el-camino-2435

The interiors is the actual surprise here with everything in quite good condition, with what seems only the driver’s seat needing a complete re-upholster.
Door panels and the dash seem intact and even the carpets don’t look too shabby.

Overall, for a current bid of $4600 with three days to go, this El Camino has all the elements to be made back into a great muscle machine at arguably one of the best years.
Check it out and see what you think.

Again, we hit the top end of the spectrum when it comes to classic muscle cars, with a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T and amazingly with only 10 miles on the clock!

BUY NOW ON EBAY.

At first, you see a pristine condition Hemi 426 J Code car, but then you see the asking price of $199,950…gulp. When you’re used to looking at barn finds and best buys, the top end of the spectrum can sometimes be a shock.

With this sort of price you would expect everything to be the best of the best, which you do have here in the form of a 426Cu. 2x4bbl engine, all codes correct and an original muscle car national Concourse Gold Certificate to prove it is top of the heap. The car even comes with some other extra bits of documentation such as a PPG chart of the 68 Dodge colors, spec sheet and models and prices from Dodge at the time.

The car has gone through a thorough restoration with what is said to have had spent over 125k in parts and labor through the process.

For any investment grade muscle car which is in #1 concours condition, you would expect top end prices, but having a quick look over at Hagerty’s  valuation tool, a #1 concours Charger is estimated at $177,000, with a #2 at $134,000. This is also an automatic vehicle which is said to be -10%.
The seller will factor in the expensive restoration project and such, but it’s really what the market is at at this point which matters.

This means that if you are serious about buying this vehicle, a little bit of negotiation would be in order, but at the end of the day, you know you will have a vehicle that will slowly increase in value as the years go by.

1968-dodge-charger-rt-145

The original listing –
‘This Concourse Restored 1968 Dodge Hemi Charger is the best of the best. If you are looking to add one of the nicest cars I have seen, to your collection, this is it. We have a inch thick stack of documentation , including, a original build sheet, the original Certicard, a copy of the original window sticker, a copy of the PPG chart of the 68 dodge colors, a copy of the 1968 Charger spec sheet, models, and prices, from dodge.

A decode sheet, a owners manual, the original muscle car national Concourse Gold Certificate. From there we have numerous pictures detailing the restoration from the media blasting, to the paint, then all mechanicals. Including the engine and all its details…. some names that you may know, on this build are Troy Angelly Restorations, out of Ill. which did the ready strip, that started at the end of 2007.

The Start was a 100 hours on the basic body prep. Next was paint and body detail, to the tune of over 40k, this part was done towards the end of 2008. around mid 2009 the numbers match engine was rebuild by Hensley Performance in Knoxville. From there Jacobs Restorations out of Evansville, did the assembly in 2009/2010. there are numerous invoices and detail on the assembly. looks like all totaled this was a 3 to 4 year restoration project, and well over 125k In parts and labor, besides the car itself. All the above as well, as if course the car itself , are available for personal inspection.

The truth is, you can spend years and years, first finding this type car to restore. then years and years chasing all the correct parts. Then years restoring to this level. not even thinking about the money and time to do so. (which of course would be in the 10″s of thousands, and add more….) and as an end result , still may not end up, with this type caliber of a concourse restored 1968 hemi charger. we also have some basic history on the car as follows, This Car was Purchased new at Freedom Dodge in Norristown Penn. by Warren Geiger Jr. Who was Approximately 60 years old, and a local pharmacist.

He traded in a Barracuda and waited 6 months for this special ordered hemi. It was equipped with power steering, power disc brakes, sport steering wheel, rear window defogger, front head rests, left remote control mirror, right side mirror, center console, automatic transmission, light package, am anthrophonic radio, 15″ deluxe wheel covers, sure grip rear end, hood mounted turn signals, undercoating, under hood pad, tick tock tack, vinyl top, and yes the big daddy, 426 cdi, 2-4 barrel Hemi engine package.

In 1969 when the AM/FM radio became available for the charger he had the local dealer, install one in the car. He then sold the car to Robert Ewing, a local ford dealer, who drove it on dealer plates, until 1983 when he titled it, driving it sparingly until 1988 when the front calipers began to leak. Not being able to locate repair kits for the large rare brakes , he parked the car. Darryl Dayton purchased the car on 3/5/00, with 78,178 miles on her, and its original motor, transmission, and rear end still in the car. then towed it back to Arizona , and the first time the car had been out of Pennsylvania, and set out to do a complete restoration on the car. The factory build sheet was still in the seat area of the car at that time as well as the dealer Certicard. date casting on this engine is 1-15-68.’

This is one of those rare finds found in a barn which has been stored for the last 32 years.
Considering its storage conditions, it still has a lot to offer especially being a true 118 VIN car.

BUY NOW ON EBAY.

The car is said to have been originally painted Lemonwood yellow, now a kind of reddish colour which would have been nice to have left it in its original state, but unfortunately that’s what you get here folks.
The paintwork has obviously seen better days, so will probably need a respray anyway, unless you wanted to keep a kind of rat rod look.
There doesn’t seem to be any rust on the vehicle, at least from the provided images and the shot of the underside of the car looks in good condition for its age and storage. There may be horrors hiding underneath, but from what we can see up to now the bodywork looks solid.

chevrolet-nova-ss23

The engine is the anomaly here with the ad. saying it may be a ‘327 SBC’ but as the VIN is blocked out, there is no way of telling for definite, without getting the actual numbers off the seller.
The engine also hasn’t been started, so it could be in any condition and with what looks like a manual converted to an automatic you may have your work cut out when it comes to the powertrain.

Chevy Nova’s are great platforms for restoring back to stock condition or even morphing into a dragstrip monster, but this example will need a lot of work no matter which direction you take it.
Currently at a bit of $6350, you still have a reasonable vehicle here, just hoping that the bid doesn’t go up too much.

If you shop around, late 60s Camaros can be seen for sale everywhere, but finding one at the right price is a different matter.
This example is a base model with a quite hard to find in-line six 250 engine and a three speed manual transmission.

BUY NOW ON EBAY.

Although it is an in-line six engine, this example seems to only have surface rust. It looked very solid and seems to be possibly numbers matching as the ad says, ‘1969 camaro bought new by my friend on 03/03/1969.’
The car was repainted sometime in the 70s, presumably in its original color.

The interior is quite impressive, with the seating and carpeting in very good condition and things like the dash and headliners still in good shape.

If you read the original ad as below, you will see that everything is here to get this Camaro to an almost show condition with not much work. At a current bid of $15,900, with roughly 2 days to go, you could have a great running Camaro on your hands here if you don’t mind having the in-line six engine.

‘ 1969 camaro bought new by my friend on 03/03/1969. I have original title, broadcast sheet, protect o plate, and owners manual.
The car has been garage kept, unfortunately like most all camaros it still got the rusty places, only not nearly as bad as most. All the rusty spots can be repaired and still retain the original sheetmetal. I took Good pics of all the rusted places. I also took good pics of the underneath of the car showing how solid and NOT rusty the floor, trunk, and frame rails are. The car was repainted in the 1970s, the paint is NOT as good as it looks in the pics. The water pump went out and and the car was parked in the garage for years. I have replaced the water pump, but I saved the original one? This is all the negative things. Now for the positive stuff?
The car has 77,000 miles
Has all the original sheetmetal
Has all the original LOF dated glass without any scratches.
All five of original rally wheels, center caps and almost perfect trim rings.
Original jack
Original interior and carpet. The seats, seat belts, door panels, and headliner are perfect. The only thing wrong is one small spot on one of the armrest.
The smog system is still on the car and operating.
All the chrome is very good
Brakes, engine, transmission, reared, exhaust and tires are all good.
Gauges, radio, speedo, lights, work.
Floorboards, trunk, inner and outer rockers are all rock solid

This is not a doctored car to make things appear better than they are, it is just a good solid car that still has everything that came with it and will take minimal work to make it a great cruiser. ‘

This is an interesting find over at Craigslist  for a collection of 1974 to 1978 Mustang II, Cobra II and King Cobra parts, also including a 16,000 mile King Cobra car.

All the parts have been collected over 20 years to maintain the guy’s crop of 7 Cobras, which seem to include everything from engines to various body parts, interior items and lighting.
How much stuff is in the guy’s collection is unclear, but from the few images there are some choice part here.

The ’78 King Cobra may just be a carrot dangler for the rest of his collection, but with so much stuff from parts to vehicles here, the guy may just have some stuff tucked away which may appeal to you. You may even be able to haggle on one of these seven vehicles.

Check out the listing over at craigslist and see if anything takes your fancy.

Not all 1969 Camaro barn finds come along with an upgraded powertrain, but this is what you have here, folks.

This base Camaro X44, which originally had a six cylinder has now been modified with a 2002 Camaro Ls1 5.7L engine and matching 4l60E automatic transmission taken from a 2002 Camaro Z/28.
The car needs the exhaust system completing and the seller has two pairs of mufflers which come with the deal.

It seems other bits and bats have come from the 2002 Camaro, such as the tank, fuel lines and some other editions such as the gauges, which makes this car a potential nice sleeper vehicle with some work.
The worst part really seems to be just the scruffy paintwork, with minimal rust here and there, but that depends on if you want to keep it as a ratty Camaro.
Bringing this back to show condition will need some extensive work, but nothing like the work needed for a complete restoration.

1969-chevrolet-camaro-ryh13

You get quite bit of information with this ride from the bodywork which seems to be quite solid to the interior, which seems to need new seats, carpets, headliner dash pad and possible armrests.

The car is at a current bid of $16,301, with around a day and a half to go.
This Camaro won’t be a future rarity, but if you want a vintage Camaro with modern upgrades, this one maybe just worth a shot.

This original Oldsmobile Toronado is one of those rare finds at a great price.

Check out the original ad. for details –
‘A rare opportunity to own a genuine survivor – barn find. This car was originally used in manufacturer company service (so says the included window sticker) and was then sold through Tuggle Chevy Olds in Newberry SC. in 1972. It was financed by South Carolina National Bank and the original bank note is also included along with owner’s manual and various other documents. To the best of my knowledge the car was always kept in a garage or under a carport. The original owner seems to have stopped using it sometimes in the early 1980s as I have some registrations and receipts up to that time. The owner was friends with the parents of the second owner’s wife and through them he became aware of the car eventually purchasing it in 1994. At that time the car still ran. The second owner put in a garage with the intention of an eventual restoration. I bought the car in late August (have not yet registered it in my name) with the intent of taking it home to Florida and doing a moderate restoration myself. To avert confusion, although my home is in Florida, I’m working a job here in South Carolina and wife and I are renting a home… so as far as I know the car has always resided here.

1969-oldsmobile-toronado-2435452

Hurricane Hermine swamped our home in Florida destroying our boathouse (felling it on top of the boat), taking down trees, and flooding the downstairs and garage. The aggravation and subsequent expense associated with that has made it impractical for me to follow through on my original plans and that’s the reason I’m selling.

More about the car. The car is completely original. The tires are the original J78/15 size including the spare. The condition of the body is fairly terrific with no more than the lightest surface rust anywhere with the exception of a possible bubble or two under the vinyl top on the driver’s side rear. All of the glass is perfect with no cracks or clouding. The chrome is great – the front bumper looks new. Trunk, doors, and hood are all very solid and operate perfectly. Although I have not attempted to start the engine I did verify it will turn.

As stated earlier, everything is there. The interior is complete – even the little things like the ashtrays and lighters. The original hubcaps are in the trunk along with the jack and tools and are in excellent condition. The car came with $1,493.74 worth of options including power disc brakes, power trunk, signal-seeking radio with rear bi-phonic speaker, a/c, power windows, power seats, and an $83.20 special paint job. There is a laundry list of items that the sticker says are optional on some other models are standard on this car. List price of the car was $6453.79.’

When we see a car like this rotting away we all get angry. After all, when we go to a steak house we order the Filet and hope it’s juicy and tastes delicious. Now, even if you are not a Mopar person seeing a picture like this hurts. We all know the owner has a reason for letting it sit but it still hurts. It cuts like a knife because we all know this car could serve a purpose and be new again.

I own vehicles from all three major car and truck builders. They run from 1928 to 2013. I am telling you this not to brag but, to proclaim all classics cars are worthy of a look.
Now throw in a Charger like this and you have yourself a great car. Wrestling it out of the owner is step one and sometimes the most difficult.

Then, a full restoration is needed along with a lot of patience and deep pockets. Don’t for a minute think you can rebuild this for 10k.
You will be wrong and I say that with authority. I know what it takes to go from start to finish with a classic and it’s rough. Parts for these Chargers are easily found but not cheap. I found that out on my RR. Gadzooks somethings are just crazy high priced. So, you need to ask yourself if it is worth it. My answer for this one would be a clear yes.

I would have this car at a professional shop ASAP and have them get down to the bare metal. Now, I believe by now we all have seen the dustless blaster on TV and I have been told it works well. Same process if it was a Chevelle for all you GM lovers.
At the end of the process, it’s not just about the money spent. It’s the end product and you know that it will only keep going up in value as the years go by, so your money should be well invested.

These Barn and field finds are still out there, not as many as in the past, but they still exist. We just need to track them down and restore of these rare, classic beauties back to their original condition.

When I saw this picture I about fell over. I blew this picture up as big as I could to try to figure out where it might be. Why? Because I own a 28 Ford Model A and it is being restored to my specifications by my brother. But, deep down I want a hot rod.

Both of these old Fords are prime examples of being just that. The possibilities are endless with either of these cars and it proves these cars are still out there some 80 plus years later.
Why am I doing a Ford Model A? Well, part of it is to honor my late father and part of it is I always had it on my bucket list. In some ways the cars are so primitive or archaic. But look on the other side please. These cars give the builder an open slate to do anything they desire. Isn’t that what most of us desire?

Sure it is easy to go on the web to buy a classic from a respected dealer but if you are a real builder these are what you really want. The list is endless with possibilities on these two classics. I constantly hear people say all the barn finds have been found and they are wrong. Thankfully they are wrong. There are still many classics out there hiding and will only see daylight when an owner passes or finally gives in to a person who has been bugging the owner for quite some time.

My final point is to never give up on a car hunt. No matter if it is a health issue or finding the car of your dreams. If you lose your desire you might as take up stamp collecting. All of us in this hobby desire the holy grail around the next turn. So, probe, dig, ask, and follow up and you just might find that nugget.

Below is a find most people only dream of. Finding that Holy grail of cars in a barn somewhere, the first made of its kind.
well, Fast N’ Loud” host Richard Rawlings did exactly that, the first two Pontiac Firebirds ever built.

‘We found the cars in a garage in Connecticut. They were in a dilapidated barn and are the very first Firebirds . . . they were hand-made . . . and were used by GM to decide if they wanted to build the Firebird.’
‘They were really beaten down and were rusted out, with their motors laying off to the side.’

‘I wanted to sell them as they were, but somebody found out and word spread quickly before the cars even got back to Texas. A guy wanted them fully restored to use as the centerpieces of a Pontiac museum in North Dakota, and he wanted them done in 60 days.’ he says. ‘A full restoration for a regular shop would take a year or year-and-a-half, but we finished both cars in 60 days.’

‘To me, this is one of the biggest muscle-car finds in the last 20 years’ Rawlings says of the Pontiac Firebird Gas Monkey finds.

Purchased for a combined $65,000 and sold for $650,000 after $200,000 worth of restoration.

Who doesn’t love a barn find? In the so called old days we did not give this much thought. It was just a car or cars parked in a barn rotting away. If we had guessed say twenty five years ago this would be the rage we could have filled up a parking lot.

The problem is, the word has been out for some time that these car rarities are still out there in barns, fields and any other place you may think you would find a used and abandoned muscle car. However, the takeaway is that these vehicles are still out there, it’s just a matter of looking, keep looking…. and….keep looking.

It’s one thing finding a rarity, it’s another thing bringing it back to life. Many moons ago I went to a body shop where they acid dipped the cars before prepping them for body work. It was tedious and dangerous. Today we have portable blasters that can remove your paint in an hour. It’s still just the beginning of a big project but the time saved is amazing. To get that body down to the bare metal is the plan. Then you can decide if you need a new panel or if some welding is needed. In most cases you will be buying a fender or quarter panel or possibly a floor plan. But, all those parts are available today and the task is much easier.

What was a day of bondo is now a day of clearly seeing exactly what you need to do. I have a barn find on my radar and I know already it needs a floor and trunk pan. But, once cut out I can install the new pieces, weld them in and start my body work. It’s so much easier today than it was years ago. So, do not shy away from rust. It can be fixed. It will be a lot of hard work but you will be way ahead with new pieces.

Heck, we would sand or grind it down in the old days and slap putty all over it. Sand it, prime it, paint it, and in a year it started to show up again. Grrrrrrrr. Today, if you plan and prep right those days are over. Gee, I love technology.

This is one of those rare finds we all dream about. A completely original classic with everything intact… well, mostly, but a solid enough car to bring back to life.

The car has been sitting under trees for eternity and there are a few things missing, such as the back spoiler. The rest seems to be in good enough shape to be restored.
The car still has the green tinted glass, four-speed transmission and the rest of the W30 features.
A close look at the hood shows a bit of yellow paint poking through. Maybe a repaint in the past?

Check out the full video to get the full rundown on this great find.

I happened to see this photograph recently and wondered what it’s all about.
From the outset it seems impossible that two cars like this would be shoved between two buildings and left to rot. Both appear to have been here for a long time.

It brings me back to the saying that if it is to good to be true, it probably is. But, I have learned in our hobby that is not always the case. Yes, barn finds have slowed a little but, neglected cars are holding firm.
Sounds like a stock market report and maybe it should be. If you find them cheap enough and sell them at the right price you will make more money than the rigged stock market. But these cars are not hidden. The are both easy to see and it might be a case where the owner is just not biting on offers. One never knows.

I recall a story about a garage in the not so nice area of town. The story was the owner had a couple of really nice cars in there. So, one day I drive over and figured I would take a chance. Well, I got out of my car and was greeted by two furious dogs. They did not want me on that property and wanted me to know it. I looked around the best I could without becoming dinner that night. I yelled for the owner or anyone on site to help me. No answer except those terrifying dogs. I waited and watched for life but never saw anyone.

Figuring I was running out of luck I decided to get the heck out of there before my lucky streak ended. I never did find out if the story was true and never had the guts to return. My point is there are cars out there and you must dig a bit deeper if you want to find them. Yes I am bewildered how these two cars can just sit and collect dust but let’s be honest about one thing. There are people who get mighty angry when strangers come on to there property and start snooping around. They may be a brick or two shy of a full load so don’t find yourself in a spot that you cannot control your safety. Time might be on your side but don’t tempt fate. It’s only a car after all and finding yourself at the end of a shot gun is not worth the risks. However, if you find a true rarity, it’s worth pursuing. Just be cautious.

Most of the muscle car finds we list are from the US, but by happy accident, we found this one which from Ebay US but is actually located in Melbourne, VIC, Australia.
So, this find will probably appeal to our Aussie cousins, more than anything or if you wanted to import the car.

This 1968 Dodge Charger was originally a barn find found in the US, which was all original, with little rust and still running. Whoever had this car over the years have done a great job in keeping the rust at bay.

The car was given an initial brush up with a new paint job, new vinyl roof, new carpet, new seat covers and new heater radiator.

The present owner pulled the original 383ci engine and transmission and replaced it with a 500ci stroker engine and a manual 727 torque flight transmission. this motor has a Eagle rotating assembly, custom forged Diamond pistons and file fit rings.
It also houses Edelbrock Victor heads and manifold, a solid roller cam with new Morell roller lifters, Smith Bros pushrods, stainless valves, roller rockers, Holley 1050 dominator carby, TTI 2″ stepped headers, to name but a few.
All this adds up to 560hp.

The transmission is a full manual reverse pattern, rollerised, lightened 727 with tranbrake and TCE convertor and shifts via a TCI outlaw shifter.

The rear has a 8 3/4″ diff with a full spool, heavy duty yoke and 4:11 gears all from Yukon.
Rims are steel wheels 15×4 & 15×10’s with dog dish hub caps and M/T SR front tyres and drag radial 295 30’s on the back.

All in, for an original like this one, its def. worth shortlisting.

Engine: 500ci
Transmission: Automatic
Price: AU $69,990.00/US $52,583.49

I am unclear where this old classic is sitting and why. From the picture the car to the right looks like it was burned out. But, let’s stay on our orange potential.

This is where one must step back and ask if it is possible to restore. Sure if you have deep pockets and a desire to spend it all I guess. But when is it too far gone?
Certainly one could use the shell or sell off the parts but most of us want the original, the real deal. It’s just like the barn finds we see so often now. Everyone is in glee but once you really step back and add it up in your head……. See what I mean.

I am guilty of buying a vehicle in poor shape and the budget became a joke. It became a need to finish and the money poured out of me. I kept the faith and trudged on. However, the web sites are full of cars and people who got tired. The tear things apart only to find out they are way over there head. Time and money as well as space become a problem. Most people are not quitters but reality sets in at times and you must cut bait. It hurts and you never know the joy of completion. So my friends when you see something like this I caution you to really think hard about the challenges ahead.

All of us in the hobby desire to find the holy grail of all barn finds. We want a rare Plymouth or Mustang and if the gods shine hard enough maybe a COPO or Yenko.

We all want the glory and the hard decision on what to do next. We all have grand ideas what we would do if we hit the big lottery. Quit our job, buy a big house somewhere, take a long vacation, pay off our bills, and then take life easy. Something tells me it is not quite that easy because everybody who wins the big jackpot gets an attorney and a money advisor right away. That means additional headaches but we all want to try.

So, I see this picture of what appears to be a very odd barn find. Notice the chain drive in the truck? That hunk is old and it shows. Lord knows what is on the back of the truck but it’s old too. So, what do you do?

Do you undertake restoration and go bankrupt? Not me. Nope. I would leave this as is. Buy myself some sort of building or donate it to a museum. Leave it alone so everyone can come by and just stare at another time, another world, another place, most of us only read about.

How cool would it be to have one of something? Who would value it and at what value? I don’t know if it is worth a hundred dollars or ten million. One can never guess what someone else is willing to pay. But, my senses are saying to keep it as is and museum it. Can you imagine the people’s faces, eyes and brains going crazy trying to connect a story to this archive? Man alive I wish someday to get a hole in one on a golf course but more than that a barn find like no other. I screwed up about five years ago when locally someone pulled a Model T out of a barn that had been sitting since the 1920’s. He only wanted 5k but at the time I was up to my ears with another restoration and had no place to put it. Dumb dumb dumb. I have learned my lesson and if that sort of deal ever presents itself again I am buying it regardless.

This episode of Barn Find Hunter brings you a little of everything from a 50-year-old AC to fields full of abandoned muscle cars.

The great thing here is that the presenter is straight to the point and keeps it real about restoring these old cars.
For instance, The Ac Greyhound. In concours condition the car would be worth $135,000. However, if you handed the car over to a restoration shop, the price of restoration and parts could easily match this, meaning a dilemma for the owner.

But not all cars in the video will be so expensive to restore or find parts for.

Check out the full video and see some of these amazing barn finds and what the presenter recommends as possible cars to restore.

The term “rare” is so overused in the car hobby it’s almost not even worth paying attention to. We have gotten way off track with our marketing schemes with barn finds, rare, numbers matching and one of cars. I have said it many times before that when you see these terms, do your homework.

Now, this beauty pictured is one for the books. I say that because back in 77 and 78 when these cars were selling as fast as they could make them, people usually bought one color, black. Because the movie Smokey and the Bandit had a black one just as the Dukes of Hazzard have the orange Charger. So, it seems every Trans Am from that era is black with the gold honeycomb wheels. But, in fact GM did offer other colors but were not as popular. But, look at this gold one with the gold wheels and the screaming chicken. I cannot tell you how many people to this very day think it’s an eagle or something similar on the hood. It’s a screaming chicken!

After a while the T tops leaked and the car like any other car got old and people moved on or did they?
I would argue not after seeing what a black one went for at the Barrett Jackson auction this past January. Now remember, the one they just sold out there in Scottsdale was not even in the movie. It was just built in case they needed another. That car just sold for $500,000. For a car that is about 40 years old and has no other claim to fame other than it was a backup to a backup on a famous movie.

So, black is beautiful I guess regarding this car because I believe if you took this car out there without credentials you’d be lucky to get 100k. And, I mean very lucky. But, my point is that the Trans Am was an amazing car helped by movie fame. There were more colors than just two as well but none more famous than the black. One more thing you might not know about this screaming chicken. The first year out the chicken was only on the hood. The second year the wing tips expanded onto the tops of the fenders. Trivial trivia but if you were alive back then you will remember how very hot this car once was. And now, I guess it is round two.

We usually feature on the website deals, daily finds and best buys, but not so much really dilapidated barn finds, especially ones that come with this lot of parts.
This is the reason for sharing this find.

You get a 1968 Camaro which has obviously seen better days, but you do get a load of parts with the car. These seem to be mostly or all panels, with two hoods thrown into the deal.

It doesn’t seem to have any type of engine or transmission with this deal, which is a big factor here. We’re inclined to think this is why it is being sold in the first place. The cost of the powertrain and restoration may not leave much in the end, in the form of profit. Especially after a half decent powertrain and full restoration.
A 1968 Camaro RS may go for roughly $35k in great condition.

If you’re inclined to think that what you see here can be the basis of your next project, it may be worth a punt.
The current bid is at $3,800.00. What do you guys think?

After over a year in the discussion phase I can finally share the first picture of this hidden Road Runner. A high school friend of mine advised me of a long hidden away Road Runner. It was his find so he got first crack at it. I was second in line. Every few months I would ask him about the car and not much was said. Finally, this past Friday night I ran into him at our car show and asked again. Persistence always wins out.

Scott said he would finally send me a picture and some details in the next few days. Here is what I received this morning. He states when it was put into this container someone tore out the carpets. He said “the floors are not too bad, quarter panels are gone, front clip are solid and especially happy to see solid inner fenders.” “The drivers floor is in bad shape, the trunk is bad… All there and should run”. Those are quotes from him.

I advised him to drag it home and sit on it as needed just to get ownership. Bigger decisions can be made later. He said, ” inclined to agree” and I stated more pictures would be a plus.
Well, that is how it is right now. After over a year this car might have a new owner in my friend. Again, if he declines I am waiting like a cat at the fish market. The last thing I need is a big project right now and I promised my brother no more big projects. But, if Scott defaults to me I am taking it and figuring the rest out later. You do not get many chances to own a ’69 Convertible Road Runner in your life that has been hidden away since 1976. It’s a barn find of all barn finds.

So persistence is key here. It might mean you land the car of your dreams, like in this case, you were inches away. Either way, this car will eventually either be mine or my friends. whatever the ultimate outcome, I will still be able to enjoy this fantastic piece of muscle car history.

This video is of a undisclosed barn find in Illinois. The cars include such rarities as a Plymouth Superbird, Ford Torino Talladega, Dodge Charger 500, Mercury Cyclone and a Daytona.

The main takeaway here is that somebody has discovered this treasure trove and hopefully they will all get restored back to their former selves.

I mentioned recently that this ’57 has to be the most recognizable car ever made. The only other cars I can think of may be the Corvette or the Mustang. But remember, this was a one year style and even back in ’57 GM knew it was a hit. So, what did they do? Changed it of course.

But let’s focus on the ’57 as they are as popular as ever. Whether it is a car that has been restored or a lucky guy that finds in a barn, few people would turn away. It has iconic styling and I will lay odds it will remain a favorite. The car had plenty of room for four adults easily and still managed to be a stylish car. You could buy this car as a four door, but nearly everyone agrees the two door is the ticket.

These cars are getting hard to find untouched after all these years. When one is found big money is paid. When you see one for sale today anywhere, big money is paid.
I saw one on Craigslist earlier this year in poor condition and the guy wanted 15k. A week later I contacted him and he said it was sold and would not reveal the price. I will bet it was not much less than the asking price. When you know you do not need to budge much, you don’t. So, maybe the tip of the day is to buy one if you can and treat it like a princess. They are not making them anymore so the supply is limited. We all know what happens to prices of anything when supply is limited and demand is high.

This shot of a farm has many potential treasures to restore.
Lots of old tractor stuff, these two great AD trucks ( AD is advanced design) and some other cars from the late 70’s and 80’s. I live in farm country and I can tell you most farmers throw nothing away. They find uses for things most of us have never thought of. My first barn find came from a farm and they are true down to earth people. It’s basically where most barn finds come from.

If you get to know a farmer well, he or she will be your best friend forever. They usually know all the other farmers in a wide circle and what these farmers have tucked away.
You just cannot go barging onto a farmers land and ask to look in his barn. You might be looking at the end of a shotgun with that approach. No, you need to get to know them and they need to trust you. Speaking of trust, I wish this farmer would trust me enough to let me buy those two trucks.

So, when you are out on the road I would urge you to get off the main highway if you can and take the secondary road. Of course it will take you longer but the beauty alone will pay off. Secondly, you might see something you have never seen before. Lastly, you may make another great friend that may just turn you on to a treasure trove of cars, trucks, tractors and so on. Trust me, it’s worth the effort.

I happen to love Patina and if I were the lucky owner of this truck I would do everything in my power to keep it original. Why? Well, it is only original once and when it comes to trucks, that is usually my thing. Two of my classics are originals and the others have had some modifications. It’s just me.

Go find a project.
However, this old Ford is ripe for the picking right now. Winter has gone, the days are longer and there is no better joy than tinkering with some rolling artwork.
Go find a project like this one. There are many great web sites out there to locate honest to goodness western cars and trucks ( that is how I found mine) that could use your talents. This little truck could write a story. Look at the background. Small town, old trees, old reliable truck, geez I could shed a tear.

But I am serious about a project. Whether you desire a rat rod or a monster hot rod, a truck like this is the ticket. Maybe just get it running and safe for the roads. You have many choices with a blank canvas like this rig. Use your imagination and your skills and make whatever you do your own.

I did it several times and hope to continue to see my projects move along in the way I want them too. It will cost you time, money and other issues will pop up but when done you can beam with pride. My goal is to keep treasures like this out of the crusher and I certainly find no value in letting them rot in a field somewhere.

At times I wonder if the rage in twenty or forty years from now will be to convert the hot rods back to the original status and the original status vehicles into something else.
I say that as when I have walked through a museum it seems like I always bump into a wagon that was once pulled by horses from the 1800’s. Painstaking care and money was thrown at the wagon to make it look like it did back in the day. Side note for big truck lovers. If you see a big rig going down the road with big tarps on it that is called a covered wagon as that is what they looked like back before cars ruled the roads.
So, many things in our life come full circle and we all know what was old is new again and so on.

Plenty to choose from.
There are plenty of cars and trucks just begging to be bought and fixed up to your liking.

Just take 30 minutes and try a different search for something different. You will be stunned at how many options there are for you outside the normal web sites we all tend to remember. It is a question I get all the time on my barn finds. “How or where did you find this”? I answer the same way every time as it is the truth. I spent hours searching by vehicle or type, or by asking people I know all over the country for advice or guidance.
There is no way anyone of us could possibly know where everything is. But, someone knows of a honey hole or a place that just might unleash your dreams. Start talking, writing, do inquires, and tell anyone you can remember to call a friend you are on the hunt for…. You might be surprised.
You can try our ‘for sale’ section http://fastmusclecar.com/muscle-car-for-sale/ then expand your search from there.

Start dreaming, get off your ass, and start planting your seeds everywhere.

A few warm sunny days here in the Northeast and guys are starting to get antsy to get their hot rods and the like back on the road.
Over the winter months, most muscle cars are covered up, but some stay covered up. 30 years later, they become those rare barn finds.

I go into my garage and there sits the hot rod. All covered up, looking lost and lonely. I make sure I don’t pile things on top of the cover as that could start a bad trend. You know, you drive by a house and see a car or what you think is a car covered up in blankets. On top of the blankets are boxes, totes, toys, kids, donkeys, and other things that do not belong. The owner gives up on ever seeing the car ever again and two years later it is nearly forgotten. Ten years later it becomes a barn find and you scratch your head and wonder how it happened.

This old cat is not going to let that happen. I just got an email today from a friend that asked me if I was ready. Ready? Jeepers, I was never unready. I dreaded when last season came to an end and I mope around the house mumbling to myself with a three day beard in my pajamas asking what the white stuff is outside the window.

The winter months can seem long, especially when you can’t play with your favorite toy. Also bear in mind that the car shouldn’t be covered up and then left in that state. In some respects, this may be a good thing, as they do later lead to rare, future finds, but in general, a car is built to be driven, and that should always be the case.

Whether a Charger is a 383 or a 440, it’s beauty just hides an angry side.

We all know the ’68 to ’70 Chargers were amazingly cool cars. They are our fast classic muscle cars as we know them today. They did not come with a little four cylinder and single exhaust. When you bought a Charger back in the day, it was not to go to buy groceries on Sunday afternoon. Nope, it was a high end cruiser that prowled the roads looking for trouble and usually found it.
The car today is iconic and the prices are sky high, no matter what condition you find them in. They beg for a restoration and need to be driven on the road. It’s like locking up a wild boar.
We have seen these cars rocket to untold popularity over the years and even today, if someone finds one that was neglected, the suitors line up for a chance to buy it.

Mr-Angry-Dodge-Charger-712

They made two colors that stand out for this car in my opinion. The dark green and the black you see in this picture. Of course other colors were available but something made us back in the day lean more toward the green and black. When Chrysler started putting on that racing gas cap, all bets were off. What a cool idea.
The only item better to me was the 1970 grille. If that doesn’t get you warmed up, I suggest you start collecting marbles.

I hope at this stage, we have not found every Charger out there yet. I hope more are in garages or barns waiting for guys like you and me to bring them back to life and let them prowl the streets again, as shown by Mr. Angry.

It appears someone gave up on this old Nova. What a shame, but if you look very close, there are signs it might not be so bad.

First, the side view mirror looks somewhat new and all the windows are up and look to be in great shape. The car has a rear view mirror and wiper blades. The body does not look bad nor the paint. So, what if this is one big joke?
This the Internet at its finest. We all need to be very careful when searching the net for cars and trucks that we do not get caught up in the moment. We all have heard tales of woe about someone going to buy something they saw on the internet that turned out to be something they did not expect.

I had just the thing happen to me but with a twist. A friend told me about a car in a barn that would be of interest to me and after several emails and such, the seller had my attention.
He inherited a lot of cars and was not a car guy, so getting valuable information was tough. However, he took pictures and sent them to me. The price was right and it appeared to be a car I could buy and restore to a degree. Long story short, the car turned out to be in much worse condition than I imagined. I did not lose any money but lost a Saturday and nearly a thousand miles of road to and from. So, it did not work for me but I really got lucky.

So, the lesson for everyone is if you decide to buy something from the Internet and they demand payment of some sort up front, please pay as little as possible to get yourself in the door. Maybe a Paypal of say one hundred dollars to hold the vehicle until you can arrange a way to see it for yourself. Years ago, a friend at work laid out nearly a grand to hold a Corvette. They had pictures and all kinds of information. They headed off to the Chicago area to go pick the L88 up, only to find the whole thing was a fraud. Yes, it was a Corvette and yes it was the same color as the picture but, like a dating site the picture was a good twenty years old. Hence, the car it was a total disaster. The seller thought the buyer would overlook some items since he drove so far and gambled my friend did not want to come home with an empty trailer. But, my friend did. He was angry and still without the Corvette he longed for.

So, I just want you to keep your ears wide open, your eyes and brain connecting and your common sense to be on high alert. Scam artists or con men or just people with no heart are out there in big numbers preying on others in many ways. Keep your emotions in check and do not be easily fooled. Take your time.
If the seller is in some huge rush, there just might be a red flag you should be aware of.

We all love barn finds and garage finds. I do, as I feel I have found lost treasure.
I love old trucks, but most of the older trucks really got worked over. Back in the day the trucks were pure work trucks. Not like today when someone buys a 2015 four door truck with all the bells and whistles. That “work” truck could be $60K and will likely never go off road or be worked like the days of old.
I can tell you I would never beat a brand new truck knowing that 60K was being slowly destroyed. The most I would haul would be a two by four. People like these trucks as they sit up higher, do offer four wheel drive and of course have options for hauling. I saw one with a bumper sticker recently that stated, ” No, I won’t help you move”. Very true as when you own a truck you gain new friends all the time.

With regards to a barn/garage find, they are out there to this day in big numbers but speaking first hand, you will also have issues you didn’t have if you saved a ’66 Dodge Dart. Just know that a truck was more than likely worked hard, so you may have more to repair or change than the average car restoration.
It’s all about choices and today you can rebuild your new found truck with a monster crate engine, wild paint job and an interior that is cushy enough to be in the house.

Mine came from a real farm in North Dakota. It worked hard everyday and was treated like a truck. The truck saw hard work, was left in a field, had bales of hay thrown on it, pulled a loaded trailer, used to pull dead trees out of the ground and so on. I knew my truck was a real working truck, but I take joy in that today it does not apply. It was rebuilt with love and to honor the hard working American farmer.
I am proud of its heritage and make no bones about what the truck once was. I left the patina and in my story board I make mention that a barn find truck is a gift. I picture a hard working farmer using the truck to make money to feed his family. It was worked hard and earned its keep. So, in conclusion go look for a classic truck and make it your own. It’s only original once and I hope you cherish the heritage of our classic trucks.

I wanted to remind everyone that barn finds still exist in large numbers.

The issue is the worth of the find.
Usually, the seller wants way too much and thinks the car they have not touched in years is worth a kings ransom. Sometimes it is of course if you find the jewel in the pile, but, normally it’s just another old car that someone put aside because they did not want to spend a lot of money to fix it when it broke.

How many garages have you driven by where there are piles of stuff piled on top of a broken car? That is what we live for afterall.
I teach everyone that rides with me to keep there head on a swivel. If you see anything, pull the cord and we will stop and take a look.
I, like you look for any type of car, truck or motorcycle to buy, but it is impossible to get everything. Not enough time or money to do it all. But, don’t keep it a secret and not share the good find.
Remember, it’s an asking price and nothing is set in stone. When you find this type of deal look around the surroundings. Not everyone is motivated completely by money.
Maybe you see the guy collects old signs, or other automobile items. Trades, barters, or sometimes some cash and some trade.
I had a guy once that wanted one of my old collector telephones. He tried to buy it for years and I would not sell it. Finally, I needed his body man to do some minor work on one of my cars.
My friend said he would take the phone and the money I owed would be minimal. I liked the deal because I have several other phones so one less would not hurt. You never know what kind of deal can be made.
I had a Nash Metropolitan at one time and I met a guy that wanted me to take an engine he had in his garage that was for a Metro.
He wanted to give it to me just to unload it. Sure enough a friend and I went over and picked up the engine to load it in my truck. Doing my head swivel thing I noticed this guy had a trailer, a boat and a Monte Carlo SS. But, the outside of his house was a wreck and he needed gutters and some other work to get things back in shape. I had no need for any of the other things, but I put it in my memory bank and kept his number as he was willing to trade some of his toys for some outside work around the house.
You never know so don’t think it’s always about cash. People have needs and at times do not know who to call or who to trust. It’s a golden opportunity to work out a deal that benefits everyone.

So, keep barn finding and searching. I found two of my vehicles in the past few years that has brought me to people I normally would have never met.
A friend of mine just bought a Plymouth Superbird with very low miles, all through word of mouth. The seller needs money to pay his kids college tuition so everyone benefits.
Except the guy has to give up a Superbird. Man, that had to hurt.

This Chevrolet pictured is a car that has been in a garage for many many years. I know the family that owns it and here is the real story.
The old man that owned this car, drove it for years and loved the car. But, way back in the 60’s he parked it in his garage and saw it every day. He just did not drive it and had no desire to sell it. His grandchildren who I know are in there 40’s and since Grandpa passed away kind of took over the family business. They knew this car as they saw it all the time. There was no secret about the car as anyone who came over to the house saw it. It was just recently the kids decided it was time to get the old Chevy ship shape again. They are laying out the plans to finish the engine which is not original but with a little time it will be ready. The work will be in the interior and the body work and paint. It’s no big deal to them and they hope to get it done in the next few years and just drive it when they want to.

In the meantime we see staged barn finds all the time and the wild story that goes with them. Like, I was driving along Route X yesterday afternoon and out of the corner of my eye I saw what I thought to be a odd tail light. I wheeled the car to the side of the road and walked up to the old barn. Out of no where a farmer pops out and asks me what I am doing on his property. I tell him I saw a old car in his barn and he shows me. Whamo, it turns out the vehicle is a 56 Chevy Nomad that has been sitting for 30 plus years. Of course the farmer agrees to sell his old station wagon so I returned the next day and dragged it into the sunshine for the first time in 30 plus years.

Everyone in our hobby wants the barn find or garage find. The unknown car in a barn nobody has seen in years. In reality most of the barn finds are known and just kept quiet until the owner starts the process. Of course there are exceptions to this but over all very few finds are complete Indiana Jones finds.
Yes, pretty hard to keep even a little secret let alone a big one like this. I have written before about a guy I know stumbling onto two BMW Isettas. They were right under his nose for years. It’s just one of those things that happen in life. I mean you don’t walk up to every person you know and grill them on any vehicles they are hiding. No, that just does not happen. Usually it is a friendly word of mouth situation. You know, ” hey I heard so and so has an old Buick in his garage and I believe he wants to sell it”. Then, we get the background information and ask If we can see it. And if we like it and such we buy it. But some web sites need attention and will blast a big headline like this. ” Man finds rare Buick in barn and pulls it out for the first time in 40 years”. Breaking news, ding dong stop the presses.

Sometimes these finds are a diamond in the rough, but the majority of times it is usually some simple enquiry and the simple transaction.

The moral here, just keep looking for your special car, it is out there.

This could be a truly great find for somebody in the form of an original year 1967 Camaro.
Firstly, the ad says, ‘the car has been off road since early 70’s. It was hit in the drivers door.’
It actually looks like it’s been hit in a few places, so the big question is the chassis still straight?

For the rest of the car, it still needs a lot of work but it doesn’t look rotted through completely. There are obvious holes here and there and with these barn finds, you never really know until you strip back those panels.

If you’re interested in this car, you will have to go and visit it in person or we recommend you to, to make sure this is a project you can take on.

Otherwise, this could be a fantastic barn find.

You wouldn’t think it is still possible, but classic muscle cars seemingly forgotten about years ago, are just left to rot until some lucky person stumbles across them and sees their true worth.

We list daily barn finds in our ‘Muscle cars for sale‘ section the website, but most of these are vehicles which are in fair to good condition. The cars you see below are the ones which have just been forgotten about or just left to rot away.

Ironically, many of these cars that are just left to rot are owned by somebody somewhere, they just haven’t decided what to do with the car as yet. It’s kind of like the ‘becoming part of the furniture’ syndrome. In many cases the vehicle is sat there for years, they know sort of what it’s worth, but they either don’t have the money to restore the vehicle or don’t want to part with it. But this also means as the years go by, the vehicle slowly deteriorates, so no one wins.

Remember, in those old out-of-town barns, storage facilities, backyards, many places, these cars are still lingering waiting to someone to take charge and restore them.

They are still out there….

I wanted to start off this article in a kind of Stephen King’ish way, all spooky and eerie-like, due to ‘graveyards’ being in the title, but as I am probably as skilled a horror writer as Donald Trump is trying to be a president, I will just stick to my usual bumbling prose.

Car graveyards are littered across the planet. It’s just a matter of finding them.
They are getting more and more scarce as people find these rusty treasure troves, but some are still out there.

Below are the most popular ones found on the Internet which feature good old American muscle.

The Chatillon Car Graveyard, Belgium.
The story goes that all these rusted cars once belonged to US soldiers, left after they departed from World War II. They couldn’t bring their beloved vehicles home with them, so they were left to rot in the forest environment.
The Chatillon Car Graveyard-56

Japans American Muscle-car graveyard
This muscle car graveyard is one of the more featured on the Internet, which means that the word has been out for some time. It’s still amazing to see such a stockpile of disregarded muscle cars.

Dubai’s Abandoned Muscle Cars
This is an interesting one.
Not long ago I was speaking with an ex-army guy who was stationed in Dubai. He said that it was amazing the amount of cars that were just dumped mainly from people who wanted the Dubai lifestyle, but in the end, simply couldn’t afford it.
This video seems to back up that story, so if you have the financial resources, maybe Dubai is a good place to start for your global muscle car finds.

Alabama’s Dodge Graveyard
This graveyard seems to belong to Stephen’s performance  who boast over 700 Dodge cars and trucks!
This seems to be a going concern for old Dodge parts, so it may be the place to find any old Dodge part you may be in need of.
You may need a few days here!
Alabamas Dodge Graveyard

…and obviously http://www.graveyardcarz.com/

This is obviously just a very small selection of what is out there, from the smallest lock up to an old barn in the country, the cars are out there, we just need to find them.

‘Yes’ or ‘Depends on the car in question’ or depends on who you ask…………(I’m never been known to give a straight answer!)
Some will only pass by a junked muscle car if it has reduced to a pool of iron oxide, while others wouldn’t even take on a car if it only needed a bit of Bondo work (Bondo is a magic material that makes holes go away…).

Let’s pretend we are stood in a junkyard, in front of a junk 1969 Dodge Charger.
It’s in terrible condition. The quarter panels are rusted through, deep rust under the window seals, parts of the sub frame have holes, the engine needs replacing, the list goes on………. you know in mint condition a 69 Charger can fetch a handsome price, but should you buy?
There is no clear answer until you fully inspect the car, then decide how much it is worth to you.

The problem with buying a car that looks in junked condition, is that even the most experienced professionals can be caught out. You only have to watch some of the restoration shows to see that some cars they choose on the surface seems repairable, but once they get into the guts of the car, it will either cost too much to repair or the car is just simply beyond.
But even then, it really will depend on the vehicle in question. The rarer the car, the more it is worth restoring.

It used to be the old rule that you would buy an old car as long as the bodywork was sound. Engines, transmissions and other parts could be replaced. Bad bodywork usually equals bad car. But if you have a fully fitted workshop, even the most terrible jobs are do’able. Basically a case of the more restoration resources you have, the more straightforward a restoration. If you only have two wrenches and a bit of Bondo, a rags to riches scenario is still possible, you just may have to give it a few years restoration.

This brings us onto these examples found on eBay.
From the listings, decide if you would buy as a possible restoration project or you would simply pass the car by as simply too much time, work and money.

1969 Dodge Charger
Engine: 383
‘Front Frame Rails Are Good Back to Centre but the Kick Outs to the Rockers Are Gone and Most of One Rear Frame Is Gone. The Other Side Is Bad from Bumper up about Three FT. Rockers Lok Good and Top Even Though IT Looks Bad. Only Rust Holes Is in Rear Window Corners. One Door Is Good. Front Valance Looks Good and Inner Fenders. Rear Seat Floor Area Good. The Rest of Cars Panel Have Some RUSTHOLES. Good Glass. Good Title.’

If like me, the first sight of this 69 Charger is, ‘buy it, it’s a Charger!’ you will be forgiven.
On closer inspection, this Charger is severely wounded.
Those rusted away rear quarter panel’s don’t look happy, rust round the window seals mean it goes a lot deeper – the list goes on.
A hammer and screwdriver are tools of choice for inspecting this vehicle.
If I was serious about this car, I would have to visit in person.

Engine: 383 V8
Transmission: 727 Automatic
Big Block Air Grabber

Do any the electrics work? No.
That engine either looks dead or needs a very dedicated restorer to bring it back to life.
But if you look closely you will see at the bottom of the rear quarter panel there is a big line of rust holes, not good.
The interior at least doesn’t look like chickens have been living there for the last few decades. It actually looks pretty good.
Not surprisingly, it doesn’t come with a warranty!

1972 Dodge Challenger
‘Originally a 1972 Dodge Challenger VIN JH23G2B 318 automatic car with deluxe interior, light blue on white bucket seat interior. Lots of rust in the usual E-Body places, overall it is a good parts car or restorable condition. RH fender is decent, missing the LH fender and grille. Rear axle is a 8-3/4. Floor pans and trunk floor rusty. Most stainless mldgs are there and decent, some good glass. Factory air conditioned car.’

A 72 Challenger listed for $2900 buy it now price??? Once you see the condition of the car, you can see why!
This Challenger looks like it is more from 1572 than 1972.
Although it looks like no part of the car is untouched by rust, it’s unclear how deep the rust goes.
Either way, to get this car into any type of drivable condition is going to take a hell of a lot of work.

To restore or not to restore
Would you choose one of the vehicles above as a possible restoration project, walk away as they all require too much time, money and effort or just simply buy a part or fully restored car?

The decision is really down to how much you think the car could potentially be worth after YOU restore it and is it worth the time and effort?
Simply, if it isn’t worth the time and effort to you, go for a part of fully restored car, but bear in mind that these seemingly junk vehicles are not going to be around forever.
No matter what condition they are in, someone will see their value, it’s just if they are valuable to you.

This isn’t the usual car we feature on th website, but as I was looking for barn finds, this old Chevy caught my eye.
It just looks like a potential candidate for a rat rod. A bit of clear gloss on the body should do it!
I could see this easily being a Tv show car build project.
For $9,999 Buy it now, you could have years of fun with this ride.

‘This does not have the original 216 engine.
235 Engine, Babbitted Bearings, converted to 12V system.
Radiator is not original either.

There is a crack in the exterior engine block, but does not affect the engines ability, and does not leak.
All sheet metal is in good condition, tail gate is dinged up from normal use that this truck would normal see from its era.
Some light rust in some areas, but nothing that has eaten thou the sheet metal.

This guys has not been chopped up and has not been rat rodded!
My dad purchased this gem for me when I was born, and we have kept it in good shape, and done some work on it since.’

Not as big a prize find as the 64 Shelby Cobra in January – , but finding a 70’s Torino is not a bad second.

Mark Watkins, recently retired from the highway department, got some great news as he wanted a classic muscle car for his retirement.
his friend Jim Pierce said, “You know, John never did get rid of his old Torino. Brenda, his widow, still has it. Maybe she would sell it?”

Mark had already had experience with the Torina in his youth, “They were so long on power,” Mark says. “I was a Chevy guy, but I have to admit that was the toughest engine. It went through three or four high school kids and never got overhauled and didn’t need it. It took it.”

Mark says, “He didn’t know this thing had that kind of power. But did it ever make history. This thing had a name to it, the Torino. It drove around town and everybody looked at it. It was kind of like a legend in its own time.

“We were going up against a Fairlane one time, heading between Lancaster and Downing. The Fairlane was trying to outrun us. Everybody thought it ran good. He was running 110. So I pushed the pedal on down and was still in Third gear. I buried the speedometer at 120, shifted into Fourth, and flew past the Fairlane like it was an afterthought.”

“We weighed that car one time. I think it weighed 4,100 pounds. So, weight went against you for drag racing right from the get-go.”

The car currently belongs to Ashley, John Wall’s daughter, John Wall being Mark Watkins friend from his youth who bought the car.
