Prepare to see the Generation 3 Supercars for the first time in Australia’s racing environment.

In 2023, the highly anticipated 7th edition of the championship will return to the venue that has been a long-standing host of the prestigious event, The Bend Motorsport Park, Tailem Bend, South Australia. The event will be held from the 18th to the 20th of August, with events starting earlier than that.

The OTR SuperSprint, approximately an hour’s drive from Adelaide, serves as one among a couple of events offering trackside camping.

At OTR Supersprint, legendary Australian group The Choirboys will play with distinguished alt-rock band Kingswood.

The amazing Street Party is going to start the OTR SuperSprint. Join the most beloved Supercars drivers, enjoy watching some of your favourite racing cars and admire historic vehicles from local automobile clubs on Thursday afternoon, August 17, from 4 to 7 pm.

The Seating Arrangement

Bleachers are obtainable on Corners 1, 17, and 18, as well as the ever-popular Pit Straight.  The Bleachers at Turns 1, 17, and 18 will be available free of charge, much to the pleasure of many spectators.

The Pit Straight bleachers have many reserved seats, children aged 4 to 15 (inclusive) are eligible for a kid ticket while children under three years old are free, but they are not allowed to sit on an individual seat (they must sit in the exact same chair as their guardian).

Concessions and Trackside Camping

You aren’t missing a moment of the excitement with general entry, which includes unequalled access throughout the majority of the race’s perimeter as well as paddock access.  Children fifteen and younger are admitted free given that they are supervised by a paying adult.

Concessions are also offered, and the venue accepts valid student, elderly, and pensioner identification cards, as well as companion cards for the visitors’ convenience.

More To Look Forward To

The Amazing Park will hold a Championship for Karting as a component of the upcoming OTR SuperSprint competition on the nineteenth of August 2023.

To qualify for the Championship, you must have the quickest lap time at either this Park or Mallala between June and July. Qualifying timings will only be accepted provided they are obtained during Weekday ‘Arrive & Drive’ bookings.

The Performances

This  OTR SuperSprint performance lineup includes Australian rock group The Choirboys plus distinguished alt-rock band Kingswood. The high-energy performance will commence right after Race 21, the initial among three Supercars championships at the festival, which takes place on Saturday.

For years, the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) was dominated by Jaguars. From the legendary Mk1 and Mk2 saloons to Stirling Moss’s victory in a Mk7 at the 1952 Daily Express International Trophy meeting, a Jaguar was the clear choice if you wanted to win a race outright when the series began in 1958. But that all changed on May 11th, 1963. When Jack Sears arrived at Silverstone with a Ford Galaxie, an American buil V8 machine from the world of NASCAR, it signalled the start of an era where American V8 power was the norm at the front of the field for over a decade.

The Galaxie quickly proved itself to be a formidable force. Despite the presence of renowned drivers Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori, Sears blew past the leading Jaguars on Hangar Straight when he hit 135mph and disappeared out of sight. He went on to win the 12-lap race by an incredible 20 seconds, setting a new lap record and even outrunning the brand-new 1100cc Mini Cooper S driven by John Whitmore.

At the end of May, a non-championship race at Aintree cemented the Galaxie’s dominance, with Sears again taking first place. Finally, at Crystal Palace, the next round of the BTCC, Sears and Gawaine Baillie’s Galaxie cruised past Salvadoi and Hill once again, proving that it wasn’t just fast and at home on a straight but could also take on more twisty, technical tracks.

Naturally, the Galaxie didn’t come without its fair share of controversy. Questions were raised about the legality of the American build, which resulted in alterations that weakened the car’s roll-cage and had to be reverted back to drum brakes after the Royal Automobile Club refused to let them run discs on the front. But even with these changes, the Ford still came out on top.

Sears took first place again at Snetterton in a non-championship bout and followed this up with another 1-2 finish alongside Baillie at Silverstone in the Grand Prix support race. Jim Clark eventually ended Sears’ winning streak at Brands Hatch in August, but even then it was a Galaxie, run by Alan Brown.

It was clear that the Americans had changed the game forever. Autosport remarked at the end of the season that nothing could keep up with the two cars and looked forward to the “splendid spectacle” that the American muscle cars provided.

60 years later and the American muscle cars continue to shape the BTCC, and in many ways, motorsport as a whole. The Ford Galaxie ushered in a new era of V8 domination, and set the wheels in motion for a new level of racing excitement. From its very first race, the American muscle car had proven itself capable of challenging the best and leaving its mark on the BTCC for generations to come.

The immediate success of the Ford Galaxie sparked a wave of enthusiasm for American muscle cars in the BTCC, with other iconic vehicles such as the Dodge Charger, Plymouth Barracuda and Chevrolet Camaro quickly becoming staples of the series. These cars provided a unique challenge to the touring car drivers of the time, incorporating aspects of stock car racing with the demands of a traditional road course. This new style of racing emerged as a precursor to the regulations used today in a range of racing categories, which blend traditional touring car elements with those of sports car and stock car formats.

Alongside their performance on the track, the American muscle cars also became legendary for their showmanship. When we are in the situation of tasty new muscle cars not being released due to our virus ridden planet, it makes sense for people to start modding their cars. Home deliveries and sealed off garage areas have still been going full tilt, with plenty of engine swaps and upgrades being the order of the day.

Here we have a few examples of how you can get full tilt power from a Mopar, if you’re willing to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in.

Hellephant Swapped Challenger SRT Demon Dyno Test

First up is apparently the first recorded Hellephant engine swap into a Mopar. In this case the vehicle in question is a Challenger SRT Demon, which is the new home to the 426 Hellephant Engine V8. For the uninitiated, the ‘Hellephant’ was a limited run of crate engine kits, first revealed at SEMA 2018, producing 1,000 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque.

Unfortunately, the engine isn’t exactly road legal, but that hasn’t stopped the guys over at Demonology dropping it into a Dodge Demon. This is a bold move in itself, considering the Demon can throw out 808hp and 770 lb-ft torque on 91 octane gasoline without trying. But if you have the means, why not pop the most powerful Mopar engine into the highest ranked Dodge mobile.

Which begs the question how much power can the Hellephant produce? If you don’t want to run through the short video below then the answer is 944.82WHP and 877.46 lb-ft torque, running on a mix of E-40 fuel. Maybe with some detailed tweaking and fettling to certain engine components these figures can be increased slightly, but at least it gives a baseline reading for what the Hellephant can achieve in reality.

Don’t Mod Your 392/5.7L Hemi

This little video should be the spark for a whole slew of debate. The takeaway message here is, ‘You shouldn’t buy a car to build the motor.’ In other words, if you want to go as fast as a Hellcat, simply buy a Hellcat.

Ouch, since time immemorial people have been upgrading engines to eke out that extra bit of power. But we do get the point being given here. If its a 392 or an R/T you own, you may end up spending more money on the upgrades than just buying into a Hellcat. This makes sense if its just the power levels you are interested in.

Without getting into the intricacies of the pros and cons, simply watch the video and make up your own mind.

Dodge Challenger ‘Nitrous Nuke’

As a nice counter view to the argument above, what if owned had a Challenger 392, still wanted more power, but you’re not exactly enamored with forced induction? One possible solution is going down the nitrous route.

Along with a very cool body wrap, this Challenger has been treated to an Edelbrock-supplied Victor EFI intake manifold and a 100-shot of nitrous. Exterior features have also been added in the form of a new front splitter, carbon spoiler, universal air springs and an Air Lift Performance 3p digital management.

There doesn’t seem to be any power ratings for this hybrid setup, but if nothing else the body wrap, bagged stance and spoilers make for a very cool looking Mopar machine.

1971 Plymouth GTX With Dodge Viper V10

Variety is the spice of life, so they say. Which means if new muscle cars with new engines or upgrades isn’t your thing, then why not go for a vintage vehicle with something equally as ridiculous under the hood. In this case it’s a 1971 Plymouth GTX with a rather tasty Dodge Viper V10 engine.

The whole project has been put together by Horsepower Northwest, Washington to be a driving machine. This meant upgrading everything along with the engine to Baer brakes, chassis upgrades, an 8.75 rear end, custom front and rear suspension and a wonderfully deep paint job.

There’s clearly a million and one ways to upgrade any vehicle, with the deciding factor usually being how deep are your pockets. If money is never an issue, engines could be swapped out on a daily basis, with upgrades to your hearts content. However, most of us have to be more canny with our money, which means far more research and will our chosen bits provide the end results we expect.

Without thorough research, an endless journey of upgrades can not just hit the wallets, but also time and mental power. If you’re currently in the Dallas area or want an excuse to get there soon, then the current Mecum auction has a plethora of classic muscle cars to fit all tastes going under the hammer. With so many vehicles, the range goes from the cheap to the ridiculously expensive, but that should also mean there should be something in the lineup for everybody.

Within the auction there are a few private collections on offer, which we will soon get into, but also a 1968 Ford Mustang from the movie ‘Bullitt,’ which will be on display to whip up interest before it goes under the hammer in January’s auction.

At the time of writing, the auction is already underway and the Mecum website is already posting some of the sell prices. This serves as a nice indication of current buy values or a simple way to just be nosy and see what each vehicle sold for. If you have a few minutes spare, it’s worth wading through the listings to see what individual vehicles sold for. For example, a mint condition red 1968 Ford Mustang GT Convertible went for $16,500, but what about the more high-end acquisitions?

There seems to be quite a few Mopar offerings as featured vehicles which include a tasty looking 1971 Dodge Hemi Charger R/T with a 426 CI. This one is 1 of only 63 produced in 1971, one of 12 produced for Canada, matching numbers and comes with a broadcast sheet. Estimate sale value is $150,000 – $200,000.

Next up is a rather fine looking 1969 Dodge Daytona with a 440ci. V8. The Daytona’s special features include having the lowest serial number for a Daytona, 1 of 503 Dodge Daytonas produced and 1 of 139 with the 440 engine and four-speed transmission. Respect to the person who takes this home without the wife’s permission.

One muscle car which doesn’t get as much press as it should is a 1970 Buick GSX with a 455ci/350 HP V8. These things had ridiculous amount of torque, as in 510 lb-ft., functional hood scoops, hood-mounted tach, Hurst-shifted four-speed and as you must agree, quite the looker. This one was fully restored in 2007 and is one of 19 with this powertrain. It’s also number 19 of 678 produced in 1970 and although it doesn’t have an estimated price, this could easily tip over $100,000.

One muscle car that stood out is this super bright yellow 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS restomod. It comes with a mildly customized 454ci. V8 and although it’s not completely original, it should be more enjoyable and driveable all-round with newer parts. Plus, why not buy into one of the peak examples of the muscle car era in one of the loudest colors ever.

Lastly, why not something a bit more left-field in the form of a 1984 Buick Grand National. Probably the standout vehicle of the 1980s, when muscle cars just went very weird and this car was the forerunner to the mighty GNX. This one is in great condition and features a turbocharged 3.8L V-6 engine, Grand Touring suspension and 1 of 2,000 produced in 1984. As Dudley Moore, said in ‘Crazy People’ about the Volvo applies to the Buick, ‘they’re boxy, but they’re good.’ It’s also got a reasonable price of $13,200.

It was only last week when we were talking about the pros and cons of restoring and modifying a muscle car or any car for that matter. Dropping in a souped up engine is one thing, but nailing down the aesthetics can be a very fine balancing act. Basically, not too outlandish a re-design to be unsellable and generic enough to get the widest appeal, while still looking ‘enhanced.’ In this case, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle has been given the Pro Touring treatment by renowned builders the Roadster Shop.

Firstly, it helps to have a renowned builder attached to a car. Even if your best mate recreated a vehicle to this standard, he firstly should get his name around as he clearly has skills, but he’s still an unknown quantity. A renowned builder speaks of a certain level of quality, plus it’s easier to find examples of their previous work and style. In this case it’s clearly still a Chevelle, just a very enhanced version. Not too overt, just classy enough to bring out the original features to their best. It also helps to have a shiny paint job that looks inches thick.

Looks are one thing, but the powertrain and rest of the mechanicals need to be in check. Tthis one sports a Wegner Motorsports built 427ci LS3 going through a Tremec T-56 Magnum Manual Transmission, which sits on a Roadster Shop ‘Fast Track’ chassis. This then flows to a Strange Engineering 9-Inch Pro Iron rear end, Tru-trac differential and 3.89 gears. A Wilwood Forged Superlite big brake kit sits at each corner with Forgeline SC3C wheels, 19×12″ in the rear and 18×10″ in the front.

The interior is all custom work with Recaro Sportster reclining bucket seats, Redline series gauges and Kicker in-dash controller to name but a few. If you’re interested in buying this thing, it is presumed you get a full rundown of all the modifications, what we are and ideally how much spent.

So, Renowned car builder, check. Top powertrain elements, check. Refined and not too overt interior, check and even the exterior looks appealing. Fantastic, but high quality builds also cost a lot. It goes with the territory and this one comes in at $249,888.00. Not cheap, but if you look around online for anything with a Roadster Shop chassis, they never seem to be under $100k. In the world of custom car builds, any renowned name attached does give an element of value. Like owning two designer shirts of equal quality. One has a know brand name, while the other has no brand. Guess which is worth the most?

Is this Chevelle worth the money? Yes and no. If you see the worth in a top-level, custom built and restored muscle car by a renowned builder and it’s more or less how you would have built one in the first place, then yes. The other benefit of buying into a custom build, previously owned by somebody else is that they put in all the hard work, hours and spend, which they can’t always recoup the costs from. However, if you just want a restored back to original shape 1970 Chevelle, ideally an SS model, then prices can be anywhere from $30k upwards for an example with a 350ci. V8.

A custom-build such as this one is far trickier to evaluate worth than say a well documented, numbers matching classic where prices are well documented by condition and originality. They are both in the category of show cars, but have completely different appeals.

If you’re in the market for a custom Chevelle, this maybe the one to shortlist.

A restomod(restored and modified) muscle car can be one exciting vehicle to own. Take those fine vintage looks and restore them back to health with some subtle modifications on the in and outside. Then replace all the bits that didn’t work too well on the old with better, modern equivalents, such as the engine, brakes and suspension. Basically, mixing the best of the old with the new.

There are many examples out there of restomods which have been built to a very high standard and guys which are renowned for this type of work, such as the Ring Brothers. But, and there’s always a but, unless you have had a car personally modified by a renowned builder, a restomod can be an unknown quantity. Build one yourself and the costs can easily spiral out of control. Buy one prebuilt and you have to go over it with a microscope to make sure everything works fine and includes everything it says in the package.

Because so much time and expense goes into one of these builds, it’s the usual course of action to buy one prebuilt. Mainly because all the time and expense has already been invested and it’s rare, they can make a profit, especially someone’s done it themselves. So let’s have a look at this gleaming white 1968 Camaro which has had the restomod treatment.

This Camaro is going for $74,900 and as per the ad., has had ‘Over $100,000 into mechanical build and parts alone not counting body shop build costs.’ and also the, ‘insurance replacement cost is well over $150k.’ That’s a huge loss if correct, but also somebody else’s gain.

The exterior has been completely restored in Arctic White, with what they say are ‘Ring Brothers touches’ like door handles, hood hinges and sill plates being changed. This implied the touches being influenced by the Ring Brothers rather than they had any dealings with the build itself.

It has a completely redone interior, US Mags Wheels wrapped in Newer Radials, Wilwood 4-Wheel Disc Brakes, push button alarm and start system and a lowered stance with adjustable coil over suspension up front and classic shocks on the back. Under the hood is a LS3 V8 engine with LS7 aluminum heads, performance roller rocker setup and new injection system going through a Tremec T-56 6 speed manual transmission. All with only 800 miles on the clock.

So, all a bits sound top-notch, plenty of money invested and it’s also being sold by a reputable dealer. In other words, if something goes wrong with the car, there is some comeback. But is it a worthy purchase?

On one hand, it’s a custom Camaro which has had tons of money invested. Far more than the asking price of what you could build yourself. Virtually everything is new and it should provide years of driving pleasure. On the other hand there’s a lot of trust that the car will function as it should, so it will need somebody very knowledgeable to give it a good inspection to make sure everything is correct.

Restomods aren’t for the fainthearted. You really need to know what you are buying into and if everything is correct. If this Camaro checks out in all areas, it can save you a bag of money. If it’s also to your taste, as these type of vehicles are always built to somebody’s specifications, it’s a more cost-effective way of getting a custom build.

Muscle car restomods can be some of the finest vehicle art around with performance to match. They can also be very cost-effective, but also as a custom build need an inspection to make sure problems don’t arise in the future. This means that this Camaro is a worthy buy as long as it ticks a lot of boxes.

If money is no object, then go for it, as this is one tasty looking ride.

Would you Adam and Eve it(Cockney rhyming slang for ‘believe it’), Ford have a huge secret stash of classic and standout vehicles dotted around their factory in Dagenham, England. The 1930s started facility houses everything from a model T up to present day vehicles. All of them having historical or monetary value and some of the most prized Fords produced.

With such a long rich history, it’s no surprise that Ford would have a prized collection of past models somewhere on the planet. Being a US based company it may seem that the focus should be on American cars. But, Ford have been a mainstay car manufacture in Europe seemingly forever, so it’s no surprise such an extensive collection has been built up over the years.

Anybody over the age of 40 in the UK has probably owned a Ford of some sort in the past. Escorts, the Fiesta, Focus, Capri, Mondeo, Orion, Scorpio, Ka, RS Cosworth, Sierra, Granada, Cortina and the ever reliable Transit van were part of the landscape on UK roads for many years. As a Ford fan, this may be a nice sideline of interest to see how the same company did things across the water.

The bulk of the collection features standout vehicles from Fords European lineup. Plenty of unique cars from the world of rallying, 4 cylinder classics, performance cars and special editions. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some completely US centric vehicles in there, basically old school muscle cars from the big blue oval. The place isn’t open to the public, so here are a few prized American vehicles stored at the plant.

2005 Ford GT Mk1
The Ford GT40 earnt it’s stripes by blasting past Ferrari at the 1966 LeMans. This 2005 model helped celebrate the hundredth birthday of Ford in 2003 with a 5.4-litre supercharged V8 with 550bhp and a top speed of 205 mph make the GT one powerful collectors item.

1967 Ford Mustang Mk1 GT390 Hardtop
There has to be a few Mustangs in the collection and one of the standouts is a 1967 GT390. This one was acquired by the collection in 2017 to resemble the same vehicle as in the 1968 Bullitt movie. Used to promote the 2018 Bullitt Mustang, less than 1,000 were built in 1967 with a S-Code 390cid V8 and 4-speed manual transmission(gearbox in the UK).

1963 Ford Cougar II concept car
The Cougar II was based on the Cobra SX by Shelby and also came as a convertible. Under the hood(bonnet in the UK) is a 260HP V8 pushing the two seater touring car up to 175 mph. It was meant to originally line up against the Corvette, but never really made it.

Mustang Concept Car
There has to be some modern muscle in there and this example has a 5.0 liter V8 with 410 horses and a 0-62 mph time in 4.8 seconds. A muscle car was a strange concept in Europe, unless you were a fan of US muscle cars as an import. But Ford changed that in 2016 offering the Mustang in native hand drive. Outselling many native performance vehicles, the Mustang is slowly waking up Europe to modern muscle cars.

Capri 280
The Ford Capri is sometimes referred to as the European Ford muscle car. Philip T. Clark, designer of the Ford Mustang had a hand in it’s creation. From 1968-1986 the Capri sold well and this 2.8-liter V6 version with 160 horses was one of the top performers. Ok, it wasn’t available in America, but it’s probably the nearest Europe got to its own muscle car.

It’s been almost a year since the Dodge Demon was released to the public. The heavyweight champion of the muscle car world has definitely influenced the rest of the line, with one of its latest offspring being the RT Scat Pack 1320 ‘Angry Bee.’ This ‘1320’ package (1,320 feet in a quarter mile) is a $3,995 option on top of a regular Challenger RT Scat Pack at $46,080.

For the extra you get a 392 HEMI® V8 with 485HP and 475 lb.ft. of torque going through a TorqueFlite 8HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission, 3.09:1 rear end and with Demon influenced extreme-duty 41-spline rear-axle halfshafts, adaptive dampers with Drag mode, Torque Reserve system, trans brake and a finger-actuated line-lock. Basically, all the tools you need for a quality burnout and hard launch.

The package also add some niceties such as Super Bee logos, instrument panel, splash screen on the gauge cluster, Brembo brakes, gloss black 20-inch wheels on Nexen SUR4G drag-spec 275/40R20 tires and just like the Demon, just the drivers seat or the others included as a $1 option. There’s even a nice little lip to the rear spoiler. Colors include – B5 Blue, Destroyer Grey, F8 Green, Go Mango, Granite Crystal, Indigo Blue, Maximum Steel, Octane Red, Pitch Black, Plum Crazy, TorRed, Triple Nickel (NEW), White Knuckle and Yellow Jacket.

Being drag race orientated, the car’s been approved by the NHRA for Stock and Super Stock Competition, which means owners can tweak away on their cars as long as its within the rules. Dodge even says it’s the fastest naturally aspirated, street-legal muscle car around. In real-world figures this equates to 11.7-second at 115mph in the quarter mile and 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds. Just that bit quicker than the 2019 Scat Pack R/T wide-body quarter mile at 12.1 seconds. (having just one seat drops 114 pounds and a tenth of a second faster with the 1320.)

So what’s the main feedback? Alot of Demon tech. has been added, it’s easier to drive than the Demon and more readily available. Its drag optimized, but can still do as a daily driver. If you couldn’t get hold of a Demon and the Redeye is too expensive, then the 1320 is a good choice if you want to hit the strip, along with the options of daily niceties. The tech. is setup for drapstrip launches and Dodge positively encourage all owners to use the car for what it was made for.

The 392ci (6.4L) Hemi V8 is also the prime performer for Mopar outside the Hellcat setups. It’s a rock solid performer, just waiting to be tweaked and fettled. It also has loads of aftermarket ‘bits’ available, making it an ideal platform for building up to any power levels your pocket or kid’s trust fund allows.

Caveats? Well, if you want to include all the options then the price gets cranked up. You could get a Hellcat or Widebody, but the 1320 has more Demon tech. like the transbrake and covers the road and drapstrip in equal amounts. In ‘Sports mode’ its also potentially happy as a touring car. Adding all the extra goodies, may defeat the object of a drag optimized car, but the choices are there if needed for more roadgoing creature comforts.

So, if you need more whack than a standard Scat Pack, something dragstrip orientated straight from the factory and flavors of the Demon, then the 1320 could sit very well. The 1320 also includes a one-year membership to the NHRA or NMCA, 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and the Dodge 1320 club.

Ever since seeing Mike Musto’s (Host of Drive) Pro touring Dodge Daytona, the idea of owning a project version of the Daytona or Plymouth Superbird has seemed appealing. You can check out what the car is about in the video below. Suffice to say, when it’s done right by the right people, the results can be spectacular.

This example is a Plymouth Superbird, still a winged Warrior, but based on the Plymouth Road Runner rather than the Dodge Charger. This one has a freshly built 440ci. engine with seemingly new everything which the ads. states the car has had over $125,000.00 invested into it. From the looks of the images everything on the car seems to be following vintage principles, staying more true to the original rather than a complete restomod. With this in mind, you probably think more vintage wheels would have been used, rather than the 20 inch polished billet rims.

As it seems the thought process here was more a tribute rather than a restomod, original type Superbird decals are on the headlight covers, rear panels and wing. I get why this was done, but the car may have looked more clean and sinister just being completely straight black.

The reserve has not been met at $52,100.00, so it will be very interesting to see the final selling price. Tribute cars can always be a big grey area, but arguably just as gray an area as any restoration job. The more background information on the original car and build process helps with peace of mind. Still, on looks alone this is a fantastic looking vehicle, recreating one of the more original muscle car designs. It’s just if you can get it for the right price.

Pro tourers, restomods or any other type of customised muscle car can be a big grey area, not just on pricing. You have a classic body which is worth ‘X’ amount and all the upgraded ‘bits’ worth ‘Y’ amount. Time spent, who built the car and many other factors can come into play for its final asking price. The car can also be built for someone’s particular subjective wants and needs, which may not tickle the fancy of everybody else. Although that might seem a bit negative, is just being aware that the vehicle should be everything you want and the asking price isn’t too outlandish.

2018 will hopefully see the emergence of a 1968 Yenko Camaro as it was originally built, put together by the outfit Brand New Muscle Car, in association with General Marketing Capital, Inc., who own the licensing rights to Yenko and the Yenko Camaro. The outfit based in Tulsa, Oklahoma specialise in custom muscle cars built from scratch, who will make each vehicle as a custom build, exactly like the original specs.

To make these vehicles as authentic and exclusive as possible, they will be added to the official Yenko Worldwide Registry, but no production numbers have been released as yet. The new vehicles will follow the exact lines of the originals and what made them stand out, with a L72 427ci. big block V8 engine with 450 horsepower, twin-snorkel fibreglass hood, Pontiac 14×6-inch wheels with Yenko caps, upgraded suspension, 1 1/8th inch front anti-sway bar, 140 mph (230 km/h) speedometer, front and rear spoilers and of course complete Yenko badging and 427 emblems. You should also get presumably a tome of paperwork to prove its authenticity.

If you check out their website link below, you can also order your continuation Yenko in any permutation you like. The options seem to be a coupe or convertible starting at $149,995, an RS, SS, restomod, pro touring/pro Street versions. All the permutations are there to give a potential customer a completely original spec. build or to pick and choose which upgrades they prefer to get a slightly more modern feel, but still having the best of the old design.

The vehicle stood out at the time as they were a cut above the rest in parts and performance, with the official engine displacement limited to 396 ci., Yenko utilised the COPO special ordering system in 69 to take a regular Camaro SS and upgraded the vehicle with the best performance parts of the time. Only 64 Yenko Camaros were built in 1968, with precious few surviving today. There have since being newer versions of the Yenko Camaro built on the latest platform vehicles such as in 2010 and 2015 onwards, but with original vehicle prices topping $250k, the continuation series is the next best thing to an original classic.

Fesler based in Scottsdale, AZ, take vintage vehicles, mostly muscle cars and trucks and create wonderful custom masterpieces. One such creation is the “Project Blown” 1969 Camaro, which like any quality custom muscle car keeps its original lines while making the best of every available feature.

The Camaro first came to them in 2005 and needed some severe upgrades to produce a world-class pro tourer. The car was stripped back to the bone an initially given flush mounted glass, AMD fenders, new quarter panels and hood, new spoilers and bumpers and inner steel fenders. Four-piston Baer brakes with fitted along with a RideTech suspension, an Accuair e-level system and a a Chris Alston Chassis Works subframe.

The centrepiece of the car is wrapped around a custom 540ci big block V8 and Blower Shop 871 Supercharger producing 832 hp, governed by a Big Stuff 3 computer system and MSD ignition. The interior is also beginning a more modern feel, with a hidden roll cage, a custom Fesler Built center console, Dakota Digital gauge cluster, B&M shifter and Rockford Fosgate Kicker sound system.

Clearly a modern masterpiece of pro-touring, while showing in 2018 how vintage design with modern tweeks brings out some of the finest art work in the automotive world.

This iconic 1969 Camaro was built by Mark Stielow (the manager of Program Engineering for General Motors) who arguably kicked off the Pro Touring term as we know it, along with Car Craft magazine’s Tech Editor Jeff Smith going back to the early 90’s. Apparently, the pro-touring term came from Jeff Smith asking Mark to come up with a name for the movement, so he borrowed the ‘Tour’ from the Power Tour of the time and ‘Pro’ from the Pro Street movement.

The ‘Mule’ naming came from GM’s lineage for naming a test model a ‘Mule’ for trying out new ideas with parts and bits coming from many vehicles. The term “Pro Touring” refers to a muscle car with upgraded parts such as suspension, brakes and drivetrain, while keeping the basic original external design of the vehicle.

The Mule was built in 2001, starting where the old leaf spring setup was replaced with a four link axle with coil over springs, Art Rasmussen subframe and a Currie aluminum 9-inch rear end. The engine comes in the form of a Chevy 389cid aluminum small block Twin Turbo producing 1,021hp at 6,800 rpm and 471 lb/ft. of torque at 6,800 rpm. This links up to a 6 speed Viper transmission. The interior features a very discreet roll cage, with the rest of the interior mostly left in stock condition, but with 5-point bucket seats and a custom gauge cluster. Lights on the tachometer light up when the driver needs to upshift.

Drive train upgrades included an intake manifold knob allowing the turbocharger boost to be reduced, allowing it to be run on 87 octane pump fuel.

The car even has its own book written and dedicated to the build of the machine by Mark Stielow and Will Handzel called ‘Pro Touring: engineered performance‘. Popular Hot Rodding Magazine covered the car’s build over 22 consecutive issues, giving you an idea of its importance. When the fifth-generation Camaros were being designed by GM, the Mule was parked in the studio for inspiration.

Here it is being sold at the Barrett Jackson auction in 2014 for an eye watering $198,000.

Mark has also built many other standout custom Camaros over the years, such was the ‘Tri-Tip’ featured in the One Lap of America in 1993, the ‘Red Devil’, ‘Jackass’, ‘Hellfire’ and ‘Mayhem.’

The beauty of Pro Tourers is that they are mainly based on pony cars and with a total of 842,731 first-generation Camaros built and absolutely tons of first-generation Mustangs still around, there are plenty of vehicles to get creative with and upgrade in any permutation you wish. The general love of vintage muscle car design with upgraded parts all round results in arguably the ideal mix of modern motoring.

The automobile was invented so anybody could take advantage of this mechanical machine to go where they wanted, when they wanted. This included the average runabout to the most high-performance vehicle. But what happens if you have a physical disability and you simply can’t use some of the regular ways to drive a car?

For many years cars have been adapted so that the foot controls, brakes and accelerators mostly could be used via a lever on the steering column. Other adaptions for engaging things like the clutch on a manual transmission were done via a lever on the steering column, which could be pulled to engage the clutch.

The automatic gearbox is very disabled friendly to those with physical disabilities as that side of things is taken care of and the driver only has to concentrate on breaking and accelerating, which is usually done via a lever again on the steering column. Pushed to break and pulled to accelerate. As technology gets more advanced, even with autonomous driving vehicles will become ever more accessible to those with physical disabilities. If these mechanisms can be fitted to a regular vehicle, then why not a muscle car?

We have highlighted in the past a few of our readers who have had their muscle cars adapted with controls for their own specific disabilities. They work and have been tried and tested for many years, but the main barrier to acquiring the kit you need to adapt a vehicles like many things in life, cost.

It’s possible to buy vehicles on the second-hand market which already have hand controls, but it’s far rarer to be able to buy a performance vehicle with the same adaptions. Second-hand kit is usually hard to come by as the hand controls are usually built specifically for each vehicle. Therefore, each vehicle is usually adapted individually with new parts.

The UK has a great scheme with Motability which helps pay for vehicle adaptions in part or whole, but what happens if you have a muscle car or any other performance vehicle? Usually it’s down to self funding. Luckily, the Internet can help enormously with things like crowdfunding websites and social media which can help raise funds, especially if there is a good project behind the adaptions.

One high-profile story which is raising awareness about this area is from Nic Hamilton, the brother of F1 driver Lewis Hamilton who has cerebral palsy. He is now competing in the British Touring Car Championship, made possible with the adaptions to his vehicle.

We have had the technology for quite some time for anybody with a physical disability to drive more or less any type of vehicle. The only real barrier now to access these adaptions is the funding. Australia has always been a great content for muscle cars and now according to wheelsmag.com.au they have chosen the greatest Australian muscle car of all time. Not that this was a straightahead decision, but the Holden LX Torana A9X seems to have won out in the end amongst the many fantastic muscle cars Australia has produced.

The Holden LX Torana A9X won the top spot with half the staffer’s votes and two successive Bathurst 1000 wins, two Australian Touring Car Championships and plenty of individual wins across its history.

The A9X came with a 5 L V8 making 186kW and 434Nm, through to a 10 bolt Salisbury differential and a Borg Warner Super T10 four-speed manual transmission. Racing versions of the car housed a L34 engine.

Close contenders came in the form of the HT Monaro GTS 350, the VK Commodore SS Group A, the HSV W427 and the HSV GTSR W1.

Next up is Lot #700 a fine custom 1960s Chevrolet El Camino Pickup kitted out in Mist Opal Green Metallic and Desert Silver Metallic paint. Custom interior features include a suede headliner, deluxe carpeting, Mercedes-Benz bucket seats, door panels, waterfall console, Classic Instruments gauges, Ididit tilt steering column, Billet Specialties steering wheel, air conditioning, power driver’s seat, power windows, power vent windows and custom sound system. Under the hood is a highly detailed engine compartment that is home to a GM ZZ 502ci engine with a Ram Jet fuel-injection system coupled to a Richmond 6-speed transmission, with an aluminum driveshaft and Ford Fab 9″ rear end.

The great advantage with third generation Camaro is that they are relatively expensive compared to the rest of the muscle car market and can be turned into anything you want, as is the case here with the Sand Thing!

Many third gen Camaros become dragstrip monsters or even restored back to factory condition, but this one has gone a unique route with paddle tires and demolition Derby headers making possible one of the coolest off-road vehicles out there. Even has a T top!

We can only guess at what’s under the hood, may be a small block with a hint of nitrous, but being in such clean condition, it almost looks like a pro touring dirt crusher.

Here we have a fine pro touring classic in the form of a 1970 Plymouth GTX built by Bair Customs.

This monster started as a V code Mopar, which was taken down to its bare bones to turn into the pro-Tory you see here, while still maintaining its classic features.

The Rallye Red paint and straight as a dice bodywork still maintain the classic muscle car look, while modern upgrades, give it the hint of a pro tourer.

The car is powered by a 572 Aluminum Hemi from Muscle Motors bursting out 675 HP through a 727 transmission to a Dana 60 rear end with 3.73 gears.
The customs suspension comes in the form of RMS Tubular K-member Coil Overs and RMS Street Lynx in the rear.

All the panel work was media blasted and then covered with 2-stage urethane. A custom blacked-out GTX front grille, Oracle Halo H4 conversion headlights and Boze 20″ X 10″ Rears 19″X 8″ fronts wheels were added to complete the look. All this coupled to 13? Wilwood 6-Piston brakes.

The interior stays mostly original with replaced bucket seats, Flaming River D steering wheel, billet pistol grip and the factory gauges rebuilt with brushed aluminum faces.
The trunk was even fully upholstered in black carpets with a custom enclosure for the battery.

A fine build as anyone would agree.

If you want to stand out at the SEMA show, you have to be a loud and proud , which is the case for this Camaro Turbo AutoX 1LE track package.
The car is there to emphasise the base engine packages, with enhancements for this track. “This concept pushes Camaro in a new direction, integrating new performance parts that make the most of the turbocharged Camaro’s lightweight dynamics,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports.

The Ford Mondeo was a staple of Ford’s European car output. Prodrive were commissioned to build a vehicles to win the British Touring Car Championship, which eventually took the top three places.

It is now possible to buy one at Silverstone auctions which is expected to bring in roughly
£90,000-110,000 ($116,000-142,000) for the car.

But what has this got to do with muscle cars or cars in the US or beyond?
If you have heard or not, the UK is looking likely to leave the European Union. The pound has already fallen sharply against the dollar, the lowest since the mid-80’s. Great news for the dollar and America, not so much for the UK.

This essentially means that if the pound continues to drop, you should keep an eye out for British vehicles and even for some of the muscle cars for sale in the UK.

This will obviously benefit the higher pricetag vehicles, but it still doesn’t rule out getting hold of something which even weeks ago would have cost far more or was far too expensive.

So the message here is to keep an eye on those exchange rates and UK listings. You never know, you may just pick up a bargain.

We usually turn off straight away when a car is advertised as a ‘tribute,’ but when it is accompanied with such fine photography and such a pretty lady, it’s worth noting……and obviously the quality of the car…

With these tribute vehicles, you have to take them on individual merit and sometimes, it’s better just to refer to them as a restomod or similar, as in this case.

Here we have an authorised re-creation of a 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 CR.

– Boyd Coddington wheels are excellent and set off the car with natural ‘ole school rake to the front and a very nice and progressive stance. Having adjustable QA1s help with the setup.
– All Split bumper pieces were individually painted. It looks perfect
– Panel alignment can still be improved a little, as anyone who does body work knows, early Camaros were not known for perfect dimensions and spacing.
– “0” rock chips on the front or hood or sides (maybe one or two behind the fat rear tires
– No rust anywhere with pictures to prove the condition of the bare floors, trunk and underside

Matt Alcala had less than two miles on the ’65 Fastback when he received his invitation to the SEMA Show. The car was customised and finished in all its finery for the SEMA show and all the work paid off to win the Ultimate Streetcar Challenge.

Matt is an OUSCI veteran, so the Mustang runs as good as it looks.

‘‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is very happy to offer you this absolutely gorgeous 1966 Shelby GT350 Recreation Pro-Touring Racer! All you really need to do is to look closely at the photos to see that he achieved his goal & so much more. His quest began by finding an original 1966 Ford Mustang body (A-Code car), which was 100% complete with absolutely no patchwork, or rust issues whatsoever. All of the original sheet metal was taken down to bare metal, completely media blasted, with the rear tubs widened to accept fat rear tires. All of the factory spot welds were completely re-welded throughout, mainly to strengthen the front end. Dynamat sound deadening liners were used throughout the entire car. She was then finished in 1996 Viper Blue (PPG base coat/clear coat) w/ Wimbleton White stripes. This no-expense spared $25,000 professional paint job is second to none, period! The dash pad was removed, all rivet holes were filled, and then painted in body color w/ the white stripes coming all the way into the car. A very cool idea! The original front & rear bumpers were completely sandblasted & painted to match the car, which is a very nice added touch. The hood scoop is 100% functional & the original hood-mounted indicator lights were modified to work as oil / alternator dummy lights, another very cool idea! The side-mounted air-cooling ducts are also 100% functional to help keep the brakes nice & cool. A set of running lights were custom installed in the center below the front bumper, and headlights were upgraded using Sylvania Silverstar Halogen bulbs, which really light up the road. She sits on custom 17” Shelby aluminum wheels w/ Nitto tires (245/40/ZR17 up front & 315/35/R17 Extreme Drag Radials on the rear), which gives this gorgeous Mustang that beefy profile. The undercarriage is beautifully detailed w/ all brand new components throughout, including: Total Performance front end, 4-link Total Performance rear end, coil-over shocks, Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes, and 20-gallon fuel cell w/ dual fuel pumps.

Open the driver’s door and you will find a beautiful custom black interior with mainly original aesthetics built for comfort, safety, as well as functionality. Features include: painted dash w/ all factory original gauges (fully restored), Auto Meter tachometer (dash-mounted), custom-built one-off 6-point roll cage, Recaro leather racing seats, Deist 4-point racing harnesses, Ididit chrome tilt steering column, MOMO Race steering wheel, power windows, Hurst shifter, original-style AM/FM radio, JL Audio speakers, (2) dash-mounted fuel pump switches, 10 Lb. Under the hood, nestled inside the nicely detailed engine bay, resides a brand new all-aluminum custom-builtDart 351 Windsor stroked to 427ci, which produces 700hp at the crank! Features include: Dart Stage III aluminum heads (fully ported from factory), Calais cross-drilled billet knife edge crankshaft, H-beam forged connecting rods, Ross 11.1 racing pistons, solid roller camshaft, Shaft rocker arms, Holly 950cfm carburetor, Chrysler lifters, titanium retainers, Victor Jr. intake manifold (match ported), MSD ignition (w/ 7200 rev limiter), fluid dampener, heavy duty motor mounts, windage tray, Custom-built Hedman headers, custom 3.5” jet-coated exhaust w/ Flowmaster mufflers, and on & on! The MSD ignition is custom installed under the dash (passenger side) to give the engine bay a much cleaner look. A custom-made micro switch was attached to the carburetor so that when you open up the NOS tank & stomp your right foot down, an extra200hp is added to the mix, which brings overall horsepower to 900hp !! Asking what is the ultimate muscle car is a bit like asking what is the ultimate painting? For everyone you ask, you will get a different answer.
This doesn’t mean that a particular muscle car can’t get close to this vision. This 68 Chevelle is at least in the ballpark.

As with any good resto mod or pro tour, you get the ubiquitous LS3 engine, custom aluminium radiator, stainless fuel tank, nitrogen filled shocks and ride height sensors, basically all the rest of goodies you could ever want.

I had the great pleasure of speaking with Gerry Notara, VP of Operations and Paul Tecci, Director Of Marketing at RK Motors recently, who gave fastmusclecar.com an insight into RK motors and their own personal perspectives on muscle cars.
RkMotors are arguably the world’s biggest sellers of classic and muscle cars, dealing in daily driver cars to some of the world’s most rare and sought-after vehicles.

When did you start your interest in Classic and Muscle Cars?
Paul – From a personal standpoint my uncle had two 1965 Mustangs which started my interests when I was young. It would have been great to have one of the ’65’s as my first car, instead I got a 1979 Mustang. My love affair with cars and Mustangs, started there.

Gerry – I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. From a very young age, going from a bicycle to 4 wheels, around the age of 14, the interest started.

How did you get involved with RK Motors, and get into the business of Classic Cars?
Paul – RK Motors is affiliated, through our investor, to Speed Digital – a technology company that creates digital solutions for enthusiast verticals. I was there as Director of Marketing and had the privilege to move over to RK Motors.

Gerry -I had the pleasure of meeting some of the executives, got to know them, expressed an interest in working with them, then the position became available and I am still enjoying it today.

Why is RK Motors better than the rest?
Paul – Our team makes it possible for us to stand out in the industry. The process starts with out Acquisitions Manager, who does a fantastic job of finding the right vehicles to bring in. Then our skilled mechanics inspect the vehicle and correct anything that does not meet our quality standards. The production team creates high-quality photographs of the cars as well as completes additional research on the history, specifications and documentation of the vehicle. Finally our sales team does a great job of assisting buyers in the research and selection of their dream car.
At the end of the day, it’s about serving our customer base.

Gerry – I could probably write a dissertation on that question, but basically, from a scale point of view, we are probably the largest classic car dealer in the world and one thing we take advantage of is from the geographical area.
The way we do things is first class and top-notch, from our photography to our website and to the way we market to the general public.
Paul – Those fabricators work on every car, even if it is just checking lights, convertible tops, etc. for every customer, so every car gets a many point inspection, which makes the difference.
It’s not about taking a car from auction then it being sold as is, we put a lot of time and effort into making sure the car we deliver to the customer is better than when we brought it in.
Gerry – We have some of the best fabricators, some of the best technicians, arguably anywhere, that can work on these cars and create masterpieces.
It’s sort of a lost art. There are lots of people out there that can work on cars, but not everybody can work on a car built 50 years ago which has been modified 10 times by 10 different people, then re-engineer it and get it to where we want it to be.

What’s your favorite classic car and why?
Paul – that’s a hard one with so many to choose from, Camaros, Mustangs, especially the very well built pro-touring cars. You get a ‘69 Camaro, put an LS engine in it with some a Detroit Speed Suspension, and a few other upgrades you can get a fantastic car that combines the lines of an old school muscle car but outrun most late-model cars on the track.

Gerry – It would have to be a 1971 Mach 1 Mustang, the reason being that was my very first car after passing the drivers test. That was my very first car for sentimental value. My father bought it brand-new, it was passed down to me until I totalled it!
So, it’s on my to-do list to buy one and restore it someday.

Tips for buying a muscle car?
Paul – First of all know what you want. If you are new to the hobby, just familiarize yourself with some of the basic terminology and concepts. Whether you are at an Auction or Dealer you should understand how to identify aspects of the vehicle to prove that it is what it says it is, what numbers matching means, is the body straight, what documentation is included (i.e a Marti Report.) Especially for first time buyers, it is really important to understand what you are purchasing and make sure your expectations are set, especially if you buy at the lower price point.

Gerry – It’s an interesting question because it’s a very small sub-set of the entire population of people who purchase cars and there are experienced buyers and unexperienced buyers.
An experienced buyer knows exactly what they’re looking for. Unexperienced buyers can possibly have a very unpleasant experience buying a muscle car. It’s a 50-year-old car and they can be temperamental. The general population expect the same as a modern car, you hop in, it starts every time.
So to answer your question, dealing with an organisation like ourselves, we try to drill down to the experienced level of people who are purchasing cars and then tailor the purchasing experience.
If they are a novice and if they need special care like a battery cut-off switch or whatever they may need, we tailor that to their expertise level.

Can you recommend a great muscle car for under $35,000 dollars?
Paul – I would love nothing more than to say get a ’70 Hemi Cuda or a ’69 Dodge Coronet R/T for $35,000, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. Maybe a project car, but not a fully restored documented vehicle. One could find a Mustang or Camaro at that price point, but that is not the part of the market we serve.
The most important advice I can offer is “buy a car that you are going to love and is from a trusted source”. If you can find the right car for the right price (under $35,000) then you are lucky. Either way, make sure you have a professional inspector check the vehicle and do your research to ensure you have a great buying and driving experience.

Gerry – It’s hard to say, it’s sort of an individual choice for different people, but it depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Will it be a driver or are you trying to take it to shows?
To take it to a show, I can’t recommend one for $35,000. We don’t have too many at that price range, we tend more towards the higher scale, but if you’re just looking for a daily driver, it is possible. In the classic car industry you basically get what you pay for.

All you really need to do is to look closely at the photos to see that he achieved his goal & so much more. His quest began by finding an original 1966 Ford Mustang body (A-Code car), which was 100% complete with absolutely no patchwork, or rust issues whatsoever. All of the original sheet metal was taken down to bare metal, completely media blasted, with the rear tubs widened to accept fat rear tires. All of the factory spot welds were completely re-welded throughout, mainly to strengthen the front end. Dynamat sound deadening liners were used throughout the entire car. She was then finished in 1996 Viper Blue (PPG base coat/clear coat) w/ Wimbleton White stripes. This no-expense spared $25,000 professional paint job is second to none, period! The dash pad was removed, all rivet holes were filled, and then painted in body color w/ the white stripes coming all the way into the car. A very cool idea! The original front & rear bumpers were completely sandblasted & painted to match the car, which is a very nice added touch. The hood scoop is 100% functional & the original hood-mounted indicator lights were modified to work as oil / alternator dummy lights, another very cool idea! The side-mounted air-cooling ducts are also 100% functional to help keep the brakes nice & cool. A set of running lights were custom installed in the center below the front bumper, and headlights were upgraded using Sylvania Silverstar Halogen bulbs, which really light up the road. She sits on custom 17” Shelby aluminum wheels w/ Nitto tires (245/40/ZR17 up front & 315/35/R17 Extreme Drag Radials on the rear), which gives this gorgeous Mustang that beefy profile. The undercarriage is beautifully detailed w/ all brand new components throughout, including: Total Performance front end, 4-link Total Performance rear end, coil-over shocks, Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes, and 20-gallon fuel cell w/ dual fuel pumps.

Open the driver’s door and you will find a beautiful custom black interior with mainly original aesthetics built for comfort, safety, as well as functionality. Features include: painted dash w/ all factory original gauges (fully restored), Auto Meter tachometer (dash-mounted), custom-built one-off 6-point roll cage, Recaro leather racing seats, Deist 4-point racing harnesses, Ididit chrome tilt steering column, MOMO Race steering wheel, power windows, Hurst shifter, original-style AM/FM radio, JL Audio speakers, (2) dash-mounted fuel pump switches, 10 Lb. Under the hood, nestled inside the nicely detailed engine bay, resides a brand new all-aluminum custom-builtDart 351 Windsor stroked to 427ci, which produces 700hp at the crank! Features include: Dart Stage III aluminum heads (fully ported from factory), Calais cross-drilled billet knife edge crankshaft, H-beam forged connecting rods, Ross 11.1 racing pistons, solid roller camshaft, Shaft rocker arms, Holly 950cfm carburetor, Chrysler lifters, titanium retainers, Victor Jr. intake manifold (match ported), MSD ignition (w/ 7200 rev limiter), fluid dampener, heavy duty motor mounts, windage tray, Custom-built Hedman headers, custom 3.5” jet-coated exhaust w/ Flowmaster mufflers, and on & on! The MSD ignition is custom installed under the dash (passenger side) to give the engine bay a much cleaner look. A custom-made micro switch was attached to the carburetor so that when you open up the NOS tank & stomp your right foot down, an extra200hp is added to the mix, which brings overall horsepower to 900hp !! Soap box time….
Yep, like an argument brought up in a debating society, having an appreciation for classic vehicles and especially classic muscle cars, will help us not just appreciate the automotive industry of old in general, but also to appreciate everything that eventually becomes old.
This viewpoint was borne out of an interview with Paul Tecci and Gerry Notara of RkMotors ( exclusive interview coming soon!) Paul expressed his love for Pro Touring and Restomod vehicles, stating that they had the best of both worlds, the best of both the old and the new. This got me thinking, if you extrapolate this viewpoint out, it will open you up to a vast body of knowledge and appreciation. All positives.

An appreciation of the old.
Appreciating what came before is a learning curve.
Generalizing, when we are young, we want everything to be new. It’s a natural way to look at things, but as we age (we all do!), we come to appreciate not just the things we held dear in our own youths, but also the best of what came in the past.

This is an important point to consider, as it leads us to appreciate all things, if they are old or new, so we can basically get the best of both worlds, not just because it is current.

We all get old at some time.
Its a sad fact of life, it happens to us all, but the benefits we gain in knowledge and out look, can outweigh the odd wrinkle!
When it comes to cars, if we all start to appreciate the very earliest vehicles to the latest productions, we don’t just broaden our outlook, we expand our knowledge which can have a knock-on effect into other areas of our life.

A small example is with music. If you only listen to what is current, you are missing out on a massive area of what came before and what the modern stuff came from. If you dig into the past, you find a wealth of stuff produced which can possibly last you a lifetime of research and listening.
So it goes with cars. Every step since the earliest automobile is built on the next until we have what we have now. Knowing all these steps and cherry picking the best, means you have a wider variety of choice and knowledge.
On one car show, I saw a restoration where they added A/C to a classic muscle car, but the interface with the driver was the original heater controls which gave the visuals of the classic car with modern day technology behind the scenes. You still have the organic looks and feel of the original, but with all the choices and variations of what we expect today.

In conclusion, why not get the best of both worlds and open up to not only what is current but also what came in the past.

I showed a picture of this Chevrolet Bel Air to a colleague, who commented, ‘Tut, it’s only a Bel Air…!’
They have since been ostracised from the office, banned from all Christmas parties and made to look at a British Morris Minor for six hours for their sins.

Chevrolet Bel Airs can almost look sedate in their stock form. But like an ugly duckling to swan transformation, once they are hot rodded, they can look fantastic.
They just seem to have a certain something which make them look so cool once modded.

This Bel-Air is no exception.
Top-of-the-line parts and restoration process mean that you have to pay top dollar, but you are getting a top dollar ride.

638Hp and a $250,000 build means this Bel-Air could be one of the best restomods around.
It may be their flat wide stance and basic raw looks, but whatever the initial motivation, the results can look outstanding.

‘This Bel Air was built by world famous D&P classics out of Huntington,CA. The car was completely stripped down to bare metal and every bolt and was put on new. This car has the most expensive parts on it and was built with no budget.
The floors got all new sheet metal and raised to make clearance for the complete ART MORRISON chassis. The chassis received a complete 4 way RIDE TECH air ride system with BLISTEIN shocks. new Ford 9″ rear went on with 3.70:1 gears. Wilwood 4 and 6 piston brakes. Ricks Hot Rods stainless tank.

Excluding a few other countries and pockets of enthusiasts round the world, the main love of muscle cars is obviously in America, but why is this?

I think I am in a lucky situation where I’ve spent time in the US and Europe over the years and see the attitudes towards cars in general on both sides of the fence.
Europe’s mindset for car manufacture is simply ‘compacts’ in general. Why? It’s simply smaller roads, land mass and gas prices are astronomical. Smaller roads = cars with smaller engines. That’s the mindset. Squeeze the most out of the smaller engine.
Racing heritage like rallying and Formula One rule. Cornering is almost their mindset. why the Nürburgring is now the standard for setting times.

America prefers straight-line speed – much generalizing. Which quite honestly, is what motivates the majority of petrol heads. This is why land speed records will always be popular. We all want to go faster and faster!
Drag racing, street racing, has its fans in Europe, but it’s not part of the whole culture.
The muscle cars mantra of ‘no replacement for displacement’ is true, it’s just a shame we have finite oil in the ground!
Large displacement engines in Europe are reserved for the ‘high’ end vehicles and sports cars in general.

So this is arguing just the differences of automotive culture and preferences, but the negative views against muscle cars do go on from across the pond.

One of the negatives that is always thrown out is that of build quality from the muscle car era and suspension.
But really, you have to look at what the rest of the world was producing at that time. Yes, we have the classics from Italy and the UK, but they are usually one-off vehicles, not an era of vehicles.
Look into the engines and build quality from the rest of the world during the muscle car era. The engineering and technology was of its time also, leaf springs, heavy chassis, etc. They too had misaligned panels and could dissolve in rain if not cared for regularly!
Sorry for picking on Morris Minor owners out there, but using them as an example, leaf springs with bouncy suspension, prone to be unreliable, but they still became a cherished car of the people.

Muscle cars to me promote an ethos as well as an era of cars.
A time when there was free range to be creative with the design, styling and engines, with potentially no limit. A platform designed to be built upon, with looks that still hold up today.
Any car can be potentially customized, but the ‘options’ were more added expensive extras –  generalizing in Europe, than building on the platform and making the car more unique.

Muscle cars will always be seen by the rest of the world as very individual to America, but era defining, culturally and artistically ( just think of all the TV shows and films which starred muscle cars) standout in automotive history and most importantly, still carry on today under the same moniker.

It’s an argument that will rage on forever, but personally, I don’t care what the rest think, listen to the engine tone of an old Mustang or Challenger and get behind the wheel. I really haven’t met anyone yet who doesn’t come away with a smile and is exhilarated.

As a last note, an everyday phone call to my utility company, got me chatting to the lady on the other end of the call. I brought up the topic of muscle cars.
She responded with enthusiasm, ‘my dad used to drive Mustangs and work on them. I love them! You just know the sound of a Mustang engine when you hear one.’
…….those are strong emotional memories, only made from a decade of a unique way to try and build the best cars out there.

‘the simply spectacular engine bay, which is filled with 473 cubic inches of Pontiac big block V8. It’s a 1971 455 built by Gaydosh Performance in Baltimore, Maryland. A Butler Performance balanced rotating assembly is the heart, and consists of an Eagle forged crank and rods, Ross forged aluminum pistons, and a Howard roller cam with a custom grind that makes this sucker really thump. Up top there are ported and polished Pontiac 6X cast heads with oversized Ferrea valves, Crane roller rockers, and heavy-duty valve springs that were matched to the cam by Howard’s. Edelbrock supplied the polished dual quad intake as well as the pair of chrome 600 CFM 4-barrel carburetors that are the highlight of the entire engine bay. There’s also a substantial fuel system in place to keep the 600 horsepower big block fed, including a custom-built stainless gas tank, a huge Edelbrock 160 GPH fuel pump, and ½-inch fuel lines. Doug’s Headers supplied the D-port long-tube headers and there’s a custom stainless Magnaflow exhaust system with an X-pipe and 2.5-inch pipes that sound simply amazing.’

At the front of the car, a tough looking body-width grille hangs a red ‘R/T’ emblem between four pristine headlights, fade-free parking lamps, & a mirror-like bumper. At the top of the car, an R/T-specific hood props two small scoops, two pristine ‘6.1 HEMI’ emblems, & two trick tie downs in front of like-new glass that’s framed by straight stainless trim & a black vinyl top. At the sides of the car, prominent fender lines are complemented by flush-fitting door handles, body-matched sport mirrors, chrome-trimmed marker lights, & a quick-fill fuel cap. And at the back of the car, a body-matched valence hangs wide ‘DODGE’ branded tail lights above a second pristine bumper & correct quad exhaust tips.

Raise the wide red hood & you’ll find a killer 6.1 liter Mopar crate engine that takes this Dodge from ‘Very Appealing’ to ‘Must Have’ almost as fast as it takes its driver from ‘Confident’ to ‘Scared Stiff’. Measuring in at roughly 370 cubic inches, Chrysler’s resurrected Hemi uses a revised block, a forged crank, lighter pistons, strengthened connecting rods, new oil jets, variable cam timing & increased flow heads to turn impressive 10.3 to 1 compression into 425 horsepower! At the top of that stout block, a decaled Spectre air cleaner captures wind using two gorgeous tubes that took 50 hours of modification by the pros at JJV Customs in Wilmington, Delaware. That air flows through an XV intake & mixes w/ fossils supplied by high performance AEM fuel management. That air/fuel mixture explodes in a super clean block that’s adorned w/ traditional ‘6.1 HEMI’ branded rail covers. Remnants of that explosion are forced into XV-supplied long-tube headers that are bolted to a three inch stainless exhaust system. Cooling for that cycle is provided by a positively giant aluminum radiator that’s equipped with two electric puller fans & a bright ‘Challenger R/T’ script. Visually, the body-matched bay comes together every bit as well as the outside of the car, with its smoothed firewall & bright red fenders providing a perfect frame for the modern Chrysler V8. Speaking of that V8, its installation is exceptionally well done and certainly looks tidy enough to pass as an OEM package. In addition to roughly 475 horsepower, the big mill features a host of first class ancillary components including black cross bracing, braided hoses & a small JJV Customs badge.

Take one look under this beefed up E-Body & you’ll see that it definitely has the chops to back up its sinister good looks. The smooth-revving engine is hooked to a slick-shifting Tremec TKO 600 5-speed, a custom driveshaft, & a familiar Sure Grip Rear-End that’s equipped w/ 3.55 gears, & stout Yukon axles. Not surprisingly, the car’s old-school front torsion bar & rear leaf spring suspension has been completely replaced by a beefy XV Level II set up. Naturally, that pavement-ripping suspension is augmented by Power Rack & Pinion steering, & a first class XV power brake system that pinches 14 inch slotted rotors via 6-piston calipers, & 13 inch slotted rotors via 4-piston calipers. An intimidating engine note comes courtesy of a three inch stainless exhaust system that sends spent gases through an H-pipe crossover to wicked Magnaflow mufflers, & pristine stainless tips. Power flows to the ground through a sweet set of custom Budnik wheels which spin 275/35ZR18 BF Goodrich G-Force T/As in front of 295/35ZR18 BF Goodrich G-Force T/As. Everything from this Challenger’s fresh stainless fuel tank to its heavy duty oil pan is fully sorted and ready to hit the curves.

The vision for this Charger R/T was established by experience earned from their prior builds, taking the best of each and rolling them up into an a new design, the focus of which was to preserve the raw muscle car appeal of the classic 1968-1970 Dodge Charger body style, while allowing for maximum performance and reliability.

Starting with a well-worn, yet dry and rust free Arizona 1970 Dodge Charger R/T as the foundation for the project, OEM sheet-metal is present from back to back. The body shell, doors, fenders, hood & deck-lid were subjected to a comprehensive acid dip and e-coating process, the very best process for creating a straight body that will stand the test of time and road miles. With a fresh canvas.
Every inch was carefully massaged before multiple coats of PPG Grigio Pearl Metallic were sprayed on every body panel. . For the hood black-out treatment and bumblebee stripes, black was selected. The combination was then buried in clearcoat and buffed to near perfection.

The final finish is beyond reproach, offering mirror-like reflections from all angles. The paintwork is matched by even gaps around the hood, doors, and deck lid. While assembly line cars of the 1970s weren’t known for their fit and finish, our team made sure to leave those imperfections in the past. Finishing off the iconic 1970 Dodge Charger body is carefully restored chrome, stainless steel and anodized aluminum, done to perfection.

The heart of this Charger R/T is a brand new Indy Cylinder Head 500 V8 Wedge motor. Prior builds have been both HEMI and wedge powered, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The consensus of the builders was that the Wedge powered cars are simply better. They produce more torque, are more reliable and can be run at lower compression, which allows for use of modern fuels with little impact on performance. Balanced and blue-printed, this power-plant produces 575 dyno-proven horsepower, with an equal 575 pound feet of torque. Here is a partial build list for this bullet-proof engine:

The rebirth of this Chevrolet really got moving in 2008 when it received a rotisserie style restoration.
The car was stripped to bare metal, the lower portions of the quarter panels and doors were replaced, and then the entire car was shot in a brilliant burgundy metallic red and accented by gorgeous chrome with cream inserts.

The block is dressed in more red paint that matches the exterior and topped with GM aluminum heads, but the attention getter is the Tri-power aluminum intake manifold from Barry Grant that reads “Triple D Induction”. At the front of the block, a Billet Specialties Truc Trac accessory drive continues the chromed out look of the engine bay. Finish was obviously a priority in this bay and it shows across the board.

Check out this wicked 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda. The beneficiary of a nut-and-bolt, rotisserie restoration that included a modern 6.1 liter Hemi, a complete XV suspension and a modified leather interior, it’s an exceptionally well-done piece that’ll more than hold its own against any pampered show queen. And, although it doesn’t have factory documentation or a stack of plastic trophies, it does have a feature article in the June 2008 edition of Super Rod Magazine.

Raise the wide red hood and you’ll find a killer, XV-tweaked V8 that takes this Plymouth from ‘very appealing’ to ‘MUST HAVE’ almost as fast as it takes its driver from ‘confident’ to ‘scared stiff’.
Measuring exactly 6.1 liters, Chrysler’s resurrected Hemi uses a revised block, a forged crank, lighter pistons, strengthened rods, new oil jets, variable cam timing and increased flow heads to turn 10.3 to 1 compression into 425 horsepower.
A custom-grind cam, balancing and blueprinting the whole set-up and throwing in a bunch of hand-picked bolt-ons. The result is a healthy 525 horsepower that’s fun, reliable and easy to live with. At the top of the stout block, a bright red shaker funnels wind through a billet, plate-style throttle body in to an aluminum single-plane intake. That air mixes with fossils thanks to a custom-tuned engine management system, which controls a tweaked fuel supply via billet rails, an adjustable regulator, stainless lines, a high-flow filter and a custom tank.
That air/fuel mixture explodes under extended RPM valve springs. Those valves feed 304 stainless headers, which flow in to 2.5-inch 304 stainless pipes. And cooling for that cycle is provided by a beefy aluminum radiator, which is equipped with two electric puller fans. Visually, the body-matched bay comes together every bit as well as the outside of the car, with its smooth firewall and bright red fenders providing a perfect frame for the modern Chrysler mill.

Speaking of that mill, its installation is exceptionally well done and certainly looks tidy enough to pass as an OEM package. And, in addition to precise XV bracing, the powerplant features a host of first class ancillary components including an aluminum oil pan, AN fittings and hydraulic hood supports.
